I have been binge watching your videos. I use to repair cb radios back in the 80s. I got out of cb repairs in the early 90s. I have found I have forgotten so much but it is coming back... The old saying if you don't use it you lose it is true.. I enjoy catching up on repairs. Take care
Realistic (Uniden) radios are my favourite, every one I've ever owned, and I've owned quite a few and still have 7 different models, NONE have ever given me any problems, all were factory radios, no hackery such as swing kits, npc mods, noise toys, clipped limiters, etc. With the exception of a TRC-451 that got severely damaged in when i was moving, all worked flawlessly and still do to this day. As nice as new 2018 model radios look nowadays I've learned that they aren't what they used to be so I'll stick to my 35-40+ year old Realistics!
Ive been looking for this exact radio to replace the one I had that I inherited from my grandfather. I joined the marine corps and was in for 9 yrs and when I returned home I discovered that all of my radio equipment had been stolen by someone I once considered a good friend. I'm disabled and blind now and need a hobby and it's all gone now
One of my heavy favorites. I have one of the old Cobra dx 60 channel radios. No channel mods. Not an export. Goes to 60 on the dial. It was made about the time the FCC was building radios for the expectation of 23 ch to 60ch. As we well know that ended up being only 40. I bought it and many original b& k cobra dynascan manilla envelope schematic service manual sets from a old Cobra salesman. Still have the radio. Love the thing
I have two myself along with 5 other Realistic radios and IMO they are the best radios ever made, all 7 of my Realistics are in pristine condition and none have ever been hacked and because of that they all still work perfectly fine today. I have 3 TRC-427's, 2 TRC-449'S, 1 TRC-451, and a TRC-457 Navajo. Love me some Realistic radios!
I have 2 449s and a 458 , one unfortunately spent a few years inside the roof of a black pickup truck... :-( prob. need to recap it for starters. Best radios Ive seen - can you still get a Sams Book on them?
He probably maybe wanted a Superstar 720 or something but would up with what you show here and modded it according to what was shown in some CB magazine or some other magazine, what about using a small piece piece of copper tape that might work, I thought that a VN66AF would work would it not.
Mike, just curious as I haven't looked in a while. Is an FCC General Class Radiotelephone License still required to perform repairs on CB and business band radios? I got licensed back in 1981 when it was required for working on satellite communications equipment but shortly after that the FCC removed the requirement and made the earth station licensee responsible for compliance.
No, a Radiotelephone license has not been required for many many years. The only thing you need a GROL for these days is (different levels of license of course) marine and aviation operators licenses, repair and maintenance of air and marine radios and radar systems. I'm actually currently studying for the GROL with all endorsements including radar. I have no real need for it other than I just want to be able to say I have it. Already have GMRS and Amateur Extra class licenses so figured why stop there. :-) After that I will probably get MARS certified so would have 4 different callsigns.
@@mikesradiorepair Thanks! Kind of thought that might be the case. I actually got my 2nd class RTOL in 1981 and was planning on going back for the 1st class license - just because :). But then the FCC did away with the 1st and 2nd class and created the General class. Also an Amateur Extra class licensee as well as a licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.). After years of not doing any real hands on work, I'm in the process of setting up my home shop and getting back to some hobby projects. Your videos and those of W2AEW have been great inspiration and helping me dust off those mental cobwebs :)
I have one these years ago I dropped hi Lo freq mod into I used radio shack plastic blue box with switches too same way oh that's funny! A lotta guys would of bored holes through bottom panel the radio still works but all tx audio on am & ssb went super high pitched sounding no bass or liws no matter what mic? I traced hrough caps years ago and gave up.. foggy mics sound normal on it never ever had a 858 SSB do that on xmitting audio?
Mikes radio repar my hobbies are painting pictures 🖼 and listening to shortwave and ssb I have 5 shortwave receivers iam thinking about getting my ham license
+James Munn The only DTL system I can remember working on was a late 1960's vintage Wang calculator. Had a rather large main unit that supported up to 4 separate keyboard/display units. The main unit had something like 2 dozen boards and used magnetic memory cards. Definitely a blast from the past.
Mike, I love your videos! Having said that, it would be nice if you could space them out. I believe that UA-cam has a feature where you can upload the video and set the time that it is released. Maybe a maximum of 2 per day or something like that.
i have the navaho trc 457 base and i have rx with coax hooked up but no tx but i can unscrew the coax but leave just the pin in from 259 and it has tx and rx .. whats up with it ??
One of, if not the, most beautiful looking radios that was ever produced.
Mikes radio repar you are good at restoring vintage cbs radios and restoring vintage shortwave receivers with ssb

I noticed that your logic probe has the DTL/TTL label on the switch. Have you ever worked on any of that very old Diode Transistor Logic?
+James Munn

Hello Mike did you ever finish that TRC 449
I have a Robyn t-240d with no transmit what’s the best way to contact you for repairs? Is there a waitlist
Mike, I have two radios I would like for you to work on. Is it possible I could deliver them to you?
WHY so many switches? Ive seen this chassis with only 2 switches getting as many channels as you reasonably want.
We lost a mastermind on UA-cam….
I am wondering how much he has to pay for using the stunt hands.
Have you ever made it more than one minute without the stupid giggle? Please try. Very annoying.
