The term shocks and struts are used interchangeably in this video because the focus is mostly on the damper. Struts are the damper and the spring mounted together as an assembly, while shocks are the damper itself, with the spring mounted separately on the suspension.
speedkar99 Well, yes and no. Damper and spring together, as a unit, is a coilover and it only works in up and down plane, doing tension and compression. Strut does the same, but can also take lateral force from the wheel.
Just discovered your channel. I am the CTO of a large firm selling parts for automotive. I am learning a lot with you better than anyone has ever explained. The combination of practicality plus some theory is amazingly well done. Congrats from France !
My Dear Mr, speedkar99, I have been an Automotive Tech for over 40 years. I do the same as you do. First I learn about the engineering theory of an automotive component and I then take the component apart so that I can see the visual with my own eyes. I have to see for myself what is inside so that I can fully understand how it works. Like a team of engineers inspecting their final work before submitting it for production. I find that I can diagnose issues with cars better that way while performing my job. As Automotive Techs we replace parts everyday as routine. We sense that the suspect parts are worn or they have an issue. Being an Automotive Tech is a Zen for sure. :)
Wow. What a great video man! This was super good, simple language, super informative. I have replaced many struts and am very mechanical, but I underestimated what all was going on inside a normal simple strut. Thanks so much for making this video!
I'd like to take my shocks apart, but my brother lives on the other side of the country, and I don't know if he would mail me his underwear. Seriously, very good combination of theory and hands-on for an excellent explanation. And nobody can accuse you of talking too slow.
+Mi Na thanks Short and to the point is my style! And Yea if you can't find your brothers underwear, find someone else you don't like and steal thiers!
I discovered your channel when i was looking for a video explaining changing the rear struts on my Lexus. Your video covered the Camry and the detail you shared (especially when it came to removing the back seat) made the job quite doable for this DIYer. Thanks as always for the detail you include in your videos.
I've seen a few of your videos now and wow you have so much knowledge. How do you know so much about cars/mechanical engineering? What is your educational background? It's all very impressive, just subscribed!
+Andrew Chun I'm glad you enjoy my work. I have a mechanical engineering background, but we didn't learn this in school. I learn by taking things apart and seeing for myself, I don't think you can get a better explanation from any book or class :)
Hi speedkar, how true is the claim that there are manual struts and there are automatic struts. The automatic, when the piston rod is pressed, comes back up due to pressure within the tube. The manual on the other hand, the piston rod doesnt come up by itself when pressed; claim is that you have to pull the rod up with your hand
+Jithin P V You should replace them in pairs for the same reason you replace tires in pairs. Gas and fluid filled give different responses, not that one is better than the other.
Please check your lower ball joint for excessive play. A clunking noise is it's too loose in the socket.please dont try to check it yourself as the weight of the car may drop of your jack slips. The correct way is Jack up your car with the wheel making just an inch and half above the ground, please dont remove the wheel, keep some strong man to lift the wheel by putting a L spanner length wise between the wheel and the ground and lift it up and keep watching the lower ball joint from beneath ,you will notice the ball of the ball joint is loose in the socket. Screeching noises are common from the shock absorber bearing not clunking, secondly check the outer tie rod end it will also move similarly in the socket but you must remove the cotter pin and check play, for which you may have to remove the front wheel, but to check for a worn out inner tie rod end you can check it by removing the wheel and pushing the tie toe assembly back and forth you will hear a clunking noise if it's excessively worn out, you can also check it without removing the wheel by just jacking it clearing ground surface contact and getting hold of the wheel in 9 o clock and 3 o clock position and pulling and pushing them alternatively, in other words when pulling at 3 o'clock push at 9 o'clock when pulling at 9 o clock push at 3 o'clock position if you hear a clunking noise it's a worn out inner tie rod end.
Cool. Dealer says i have a damaged strut/shock absorber within a Loaded strut assembly that has a spring a strut/shock absorber and the mount and bearings .. Loaded strut is 4 parts that my toyota dealer will need to replace seperately and takes a special machine to compress the coil/spring in order to maintemance. Anyway.. They want 800 bucks to replace the front two but i found a good condition loaded strut assembly for 60 bux amd will just replace the whole damaged loaded strut myself and save 730 bux.. Hopefully my allignment will be ok.
Hey you know this is totally wrong because on my car the struts work by rattling like a coffee can full of marbles and doing nothing to stop the back end of the car from bouncing around like a ping pong ball!
@speedkar99 so the center nut has no purpose anymore after putting the strut in the car right? It's just to keep the strut together before putting it to the car, correct? Can you make video on this please. I been searching the Internet and couldn't find much on them

+pancakewsx thanks for that clarification
Thanks bro your videos are so helpful for learn about cars keep going.👍👍👍
Pls detail Valve working mechanism
You are the smartest car expert ive come acrooss, youre explanations are flawless as well.
+J Brown thanks for the kind feedback :)
You are a real teacher master tired from the class , just teaching as quickly as possible and you move out awesome !
Thanks! Short and to the point is my style

Glad to hear, thanks
What a great compliment. It's true , you're chingon

+bobdadruma thanks, that's how I learn too, some theroy and practical experience
if you learn theory only your inferior will underestimate you
You're an awesome teacher. You break it down to where I a woman can understand it! Thanks
Can we start a GoFundMe to buy your brother some new shit. I feel kinda bad for him. U take all his stuff. LOL
+Hugh Jafro that's a good idea. The stuff he wears sometimes...
I will be glad to send him a new toothbrush!

Good day from Waterloo Now we are using your bro's underware , boy we are scraping the bottom of barrel LOL Thanks Good info
Good day from Mississauga
I am sorry I forgot to mention you are a marvelous teacher, you remind me of Chris fix
EXCELLENT demo... quick and to the point.
Thanks that's my style!
The 24 dislikes are from mechanics that don't want us to know how parts of our cars work. Thanks for the explanation👍
Or those who don't understand.... thanks!
Thank you sir, great explanation on shock absorber n hence saving tires.

+Tripp M I'm glad you enjoy my videos, and find them helpful. Check out my other videos for more :)
Practical guide to the subject...
Excellent..👌👌👌👌👌
Practical is the easiest way to learn
I like the way you get into the details on the way things work in the system,Yo don't leave anything out,THANKS
Thanks, I try to be complete and concise

Very respectable. I definitely see your channel blowing up in the future!
Very well explained both theory and practice 💯/💯
Thanks
👍 well explained compare to other vid I have seen, thanks for taking into detailed
You are welcome
Like your channel. Keep on the great work.
+郭永安 thanks
great videos.educational and non confusing explaination
Thanks. What more would you like to see?
Dude... wow. Thank you. Beautiful video.
You are welcome
Great video, im glad you took a break in the middle of brushing your teeth to show us how a strut works.
Haha good one.
What makes it to come up completely after pressed down?
Wow Great explanation. Thanks a lot. It really helped me.
Welcome
incredible video thank you
great video as usual
Thank you very much
You are something else sir
Thanks
Very good video! Out of curiosity, can they be maintained, if all the manufacturing tools provided?
Great video man love from India 🇮🇳 haha And sry for your brother
Can the shock in this video, be disassembled, have the valves adjusted, and be reassembled?
Can these type of shocks that have been laminated be rebuilt?
Really good explanation man...
My tires are runing bad and noisy for shure need newones.
+Don Nato Yea bad struts will cause tire cupping

Gas filled or oil filled which one is better, is it okay to replace only single side strut?
+Jithin P V You should replace them in pairs for the same reason you replace tires in pairs.
Gas and fluid filled give different responses, not that one is better than the other.
speedkar99 Thank you
Is ISO 46 grade oil better for the front shocks than 32 grade oil ,of course we use 32 any for rear shocks, mine is a Etios sedan from Toyota.
Hi there. I was wondering if the strut shaft is strong enough to use it as an axle to mount wheels on my generator. Thanks
No I don't think so. It's meant to compress not bend
Is it okay if the strut rod spins a bit when tightening the nut to the strut mount, or does the rod spinning inside the strut cause damage?
Brilliant!
Are you a genius? Are you a mechanical engineer that understands the inner workings of every single car part?
Can I drill a hole in the side of my strut housing and add more oil to restore lost damping?
How are you going to plug it against all that pressure?
@@speedkar99 I don't know. Is the reservoir area pressurized too?
what is the name of this shock absorber ? for which car
where to find the nitrogen gas filling adapter
Can a bad shock cause a clunk noise? I have the clunk noise and could not find the cause. It is heard when over any pumps.
Please check your lower ball joint for excessive play. A clunking noise is it's too loose in the socket.please dont try to check it yourself as the weight of the car may drop of your jack slips. At around 1:25, what do you mean by laminated?
Thank you...
is shock absrober the samething as a energy absrober. Because my needs a energy absrober.
+chris johnson energy absorber is for the bumper, it's different

Yep sounds like the right way to go
Can we rebuild it
ever heard of one getting water inside ? i have one that has absolutely no give in freezing weather , but works in warmer weather .
Are you an engineer..your good
+Pg Betita yes I'm a mechanical engineer
Nice teehbrush
+shahrul a thanks but that's not the focus of the video haha
titbrush
Every time I hear Dust Boot, I thought of Das Boot
you talk too fast. please slow your pace . . thank you for the video
I try not to waste time. You can slow down playback speed
Your mother wants her toothbrush back lol
Haha
👍👍👍
this time, you throw away the toothbrush. XD
+Chen Eric haha
That toothbrush gets a ride for it's life
hey, that looks like your brother's toothbrush!!!
And brother's underwear too 😂😂😂
I'm staring at the toothbrush duing the entire video....
+Viktor Lu no no, this video is about struts
you better had add an on the tune at yourself, that said wonderful
So a Strut is: A Twin Tube without gas, but a spring to compensate for the lack of gas; hmmm interesting
Better to rebuild or buy a new one of shock absorber
+Ehab Shady Buy a new one. The lamination is difficult to replicate.
speedkar99 thanks for reply
Use my brother underwear here.hahaha
Hey you know this is totally wrong because on my car the struts work by rattling like a coffee can full of marbles and doing nothing to stop the back end of the car from bouncing around like a ping pong ball!
+John Haha maybe yours has marbles inside the shock towers
You didn't explain nothing about the mount and how it fails 😢
True. Those bushings go bad and make knocking sounds all the time
@speedkar99 so the center nut has no purpose anymore after putting the strut in the car right? It's just to keep the strut together before putting it to the car, correct? Can you make video on this please. I been searching the Internet and couldn't find much on them
Like where the knocking sound coming from? What metal on what metal is knocking?
he compels one to pay attention or miss the boat...
Exactly!
👏👏👏👏👏👏
It Look Like Tire and wheel Spring
Underwear😂😂😂
Using what I have for oily situations
your brothers undies yes
