Correct me if I'm wrong didn't Cliff have writing credits on this one. Thought was being worked on before he was killed.
@@mikecox1974 he wrote the lyrics (inspired I think by a Merlin quote) that Hetfield speaks toward the end of this song, which is one of the best songs of all time in musical history.

My first Metallica experience was back in 89 when I heard my older brother jamming this song. Later that night I went and stole the cassette tape from him and listened to the whole album. The goosebumps and the feeling this song still give me 35 years later is beyond words to describe. Great cover, thank you for reminding me of that feeling again!

Coming from someone who started listening to Metallica when 'Justice' came out back in '88, no matter how many times I hear this song and no matter what version I hear it in, it still tugs at my heartstrings and will always make me feel some type of way. This cover was beautifully done....

When i first heard Metallica in 1985 it hit me intensely. Music to me at the time was boring. I was ready to hear this form of music, especially Metallica. Lifelong fan always. They deserve to be in the realm of all the iconic classic masters of modern music thrash/Rock and roll etc.

Gosh - the Jason/Kirk live part gave me chills. That was as meaningful as Scott Pingel coming out at S&M2 to play Anesthesia. What an amazing arrangement and an elegant performance. This song is such a masterpiece. This is right up there with Andy Wood orchestra version for interpretation. And the spinning Ninja star - Yes! The fade out just before the outro. I mean come on. Everything is just spot on.

AJFA was the end of the Cliff Burton era and this song always seemed like the send off but also the bands door opening into a new era. I think they felt that even cliff would have agreed that they were ready for a new era for the band in the Black album.

This almost convinced me it was written on a piano first. If you’ve ever tried on a guitar you have to fly up and down the fretboard to avoid chop sound.

Trust, there is NEVER anything wrong with letting them feelings out no matter how old you are. It shows that you're human and it's ok shed tears when the mood calls for it.
So much of the Cliff era had such melodic mastery to it. It's what separated Metallica from the rest. This is such a beautiful rendition.
Metallica could have all their first 5 albums done like this and be thought of as classical music staples for the genre's die hard fans. So great! ☺️
