It is physically impossible to solve congestion by adding lanes for cars becase an urban lane can only carry about 800 cars/h. A bike path can carry easily double that and transit can carry up to 40,000 people per hour in the same space.
The only solution to traffic is to make it attractive to not drive, for trips where that is possible. For cycling obviously there needs to be a safe a and convenient network that won't appear overnight, so until that network is complete it won't be very well used since it's not yet practical for most people.

@@generalgiovannicresvaresur2771 Except plenty of people are using those bike lanes. I drove into Toronto last week from Hamilton and went down Bloor from Parkdale to Bathurst around 1900hrs. The bike lanes were packed with people passing each other because they were too small to accommodate the volume.
Maybe suburbanites need to understand that urban spaces are not for them and their cars.

@@generalgiovannicresvaresur2771 There were 5.7 million bike share trips last year. That doesn't include people's personal bikes, just the bike share. Without bike lanes you're either very likely to be stuck behind a bike in the car lane, or you're suggesting adding minimum 5.7 million cars to the road. Both of which don't solve congestion

@@BryceLynas # of trips does not equal the # of people. That's number 1. Number 2. Bike share stations are located all over the city. A significant number of people that use bike share do so along the waterfront and never even get on the bike lanes along Bloor Street or Yonge Street. After weeks ago I was stuck on Bloor for 15 minutes or so during rush hour. During that period, I saw no more than 5 cyclists use the bikes lanes in either direction, while there were hundreds of cars using the drive lanes during that same 15 minute period. If the bike lanes weren't there I would not have any doubts that traffic would have moved a whole lot more smoothly.

@@mbogucki1 Not what I have experienced along Bloor, closer to the west end of the City. As I mentioned in my earlier comment, a few weeks ago I was stuck in traffic for 15-20 mins along a segment of Bloor St in the west of the city. During that period, I doubt that I saw more than 5 bikes using the bike lanes in either direction, meanwhile there were hundreds of cars being stuck in the traffic, traffic that would have otherwise moved more smoothly if the bike lanes weren't there. Don't get me started on the difficulties these bike lanes pose for emergency vehicles.

Toronto for my entire life has had traffic. When there was bike lanes, when there wasn’t bike lanes. I don’t think this plan will make any different to traffic because people GPs will send them down those streets regardless and thus traffic. Frankly every city I’ve been to has had traffic except in Europe where they have bike lanes everywhere (i am talking Amsterdam here) they have highways running around the core like in Toronto but they have so much better traffic lights, so much better roundabouts, and probably the nail in the coffin for traffic Fantastic Public transit. I feel like if the premier wanted to make congestion an issue mandating in cities “smart signal” lights with tons of phases and Dutch style detection software to organize Cars, pedestrians, bikes, public transit, etc in the most efficient way possible would be a better start.

Face it - the Toronto downtown core is like Manhattan, New York. There will be traffic congestion wherever you go with or without bike lanes because our population has increased so much. The real problem is that there is too much construction happening simultaneously. The best solution is to create a robust multi-transportation system that can give people options to move safely and efficiently (cycling, transit, driving, etc.). As well, a tax to drivers that drive in the downtown core unless you are a business owner or taxi driver. No sense having random suburban citizens that don't live in downtown to dictate how the streets should be when so many people cycle (and escooter) at all times of the year.

@henryludvor6275 An study of the economic impact of the Bloor bike lanes done in 2017 found that more people were visiting businesses in the area and they were spending more money in the area after bike lanes were installed. That was only two years after the bikes went in, I am sure the number of visitors is significantly higher now, almost a decade after they were installed. The study also revealed that ~90% customers traveled to the area by transit, bicycle or by foot.
So why would we remove bike lanes which will endanger cyclists and pedestrians, harm businesses, and contribute to worse congestion?

Removing bike lanes from the roadway on University is a no brainer, they can still cycle down the middle of university along the garden plots and the walkway there (if modified) . And people can bike along simcoe and murray streets instead. In addition the sidewalks on university are big enough for both pedestrian and cycle paths. Those skyskrapers can provide for commuter bike path lanes on their lobby level space besides, or elevated as part of a coordinated official plan, just as parking garages are required for those towers.
