The first time I smoked salvia I had this song on. It was incidental as I had no idea what the trip would be like, but it crafted it so beautifully, so otherworldly, so apt, I sat with a stream made of fairies weaving its way around me. THUMBS UP! Yeahhh.
The sense of this video is composed in that beautiful music. Everyone can imagine different things.. Somebody finds this song happy, anybody else can find it sad and painfull..
this song frustrates me, cause no matter how hard I try I simply can't figure out the "lyrics". That being said, this song has tremendous power, and knowing the "lyrics" would probably detract from its beauty. Incredible stuff.
It's a vocoder that's being used. One of the band members sings into a microphone which is plugged into this device. An instrument is also plugged into it (presumably a guitar judging by the smoothness of the changes) and the notes from the guitar are imposed onto the voice and it comes out sounding like a computer/robot/alien singing. It's pretty awesome to sum it up.
the song itself is very subdued, the video emphasises this. I think this is an incredibly powerful and sad video, and is very good at portraying our world and nature
i'm starting to cry, and it's just a cartoon. It's almost like the media has desensitised us to real life so much that the only time you see your real emotions is when you see stuff thats not real or music.
I saw this for the 1st time on one of my country's cable channels. When I saw it, I grew, and I kid you not, /scandalized/ at the unfolding story. But the fact remains, our deeds affect the lives of other beings, the little defenseless animals who hoped for fortuitous lives but were now seeing them quickly coming to an end. The video depicts them as people, who feel emotions and act accordingly. Two of them are actually a couple holding hands. Hunted by a freak indeed. And we're the freaks.
Every time I watch this video i think maybe, just maybe he's going to spare the last one. Unfortunately he never does, R.I.P little dudes. Awesome video.
I love this song so much, it's absolutely goregous, so I was curious to see the video but now I'm sad that I did. I love animals and it hurts me deeply to see something like this, even if it's animated or completely fake. I actually cried when I watched it. :(
Additionally - I don't think Mogwai as a band ever intended to evoke such a philosophical evaluation... but it's a testament to the beauty and mastery of their craft that such discussions are a result. I think they just wrote a great song - the fact that some of us ascribe such meaning to it just makes it all the more special.
With Mogwai, lyrics are simply another instrument. As any other instrument, while listening to a song, that instrument's sound is mixed with all the other instruments. In other words-It's meant to be this way. Mogwai rules!
This song is so much more powerful live. I've seen them twice at the cat's cradle. Mogwai's real genius is the ability to control their crescendos. Imagine the "loud parts" of this song, in a live setting, becoming so loud that you're pushed to your physical pain tolerance. The second you find yourself thinking "Ok thats it, I can't take anymore" they pull it all back into quiet serenity. See them live for sure. But come prepared. They're the third loudest live band ever measured.
whenever im stoned and im listening to this i get sent to some weird places in my head and have some insane closed eye visuals, more so than any other song. I feel like im having OBE's and like im getting sucked into a endless pit of this song. That doesent make much sence but its the only way i can think to describe it. can anyone else relate to me?
As is the dichotomy of life, without all of the shit that our eardrums endure every day via the cash driven, in-the-pocket radio stations and the tele-visual handshakes this would just be mediocre. As it stands, and as is the way of things, this is epic.
wow ive just realised i write some shite when im pissed lol.class tune, god i remember getting stoned to this and realising everything was absolutly amazing when ur high!
i love this song.. and for the first time i am listening to it Drunk and relaxed... maybe try it high next time.. its just incredible.. im movin onto travel is dangerous next.. then maybe some Sigur ros.. who knows!
for god sakes people. its a video. and this video is sopposed to strike something with people. but its not meant to turn everyone into moaning arguing twats. i think this is one of the most INCREDIBLE videos i have ever seen. and its not cruel its ANIMATION
Maybe its beauty depends on its sadness. Only sensitive people can understand that. For me its an amazing song. I like specially how the song change( very dramatic)
@SimulacronX My initial post was merely my take on the animator's fairly obvious though poignantly illustrated perspective. The statement "Do with this knowledge what you will" is a reflection of the animator's theme. But thank you for contributing so eloquent an opinion on the matter.
Wow, this video totally lives up to the hope and eventual despair that I get when I listen to "Hunted By a Freak". I have just been turned on to Mogwai and they truly touch my soul in places that music has never been able to. Sonic Youth meats Pink Floyd?
such a beautiful song, but bit at 2.03 makes me cry when they hug. god im a sissy, but highly charged. love it, so nice, if only many people in the world had a heart it would be a better place.
I know it's a vocoder, and I know how they work (it's based on the frequency spectrum of each sound, and imposing the changes in one onto the other). I'm fairly certain he's using an organ (or synth patch similar to one) as the carrier sound as it's called, and his voice as the modulator. He's definitely using a keyboard instrument though, not a guitar (can be seen in live videos, Barry is playing it).
the video is very sad its a shame some people are really like that, the other day, two of my friends found a bag dumped beneath a bridge on the way home from school... inside were two dead puppies :(...
Ditto to what everyone else has said. This video needs much more attention as it is particularly unsettling that people like LonelyGirl or whats-her-face gets the viewers. Oh well, such is life.
You think this is odd? The album started by this song (Happy Songs for Happy People) ends with the Happy Tree Friends theme song. Talk about disturbing...
for the man throw the pets off the top of the building is Doing what is Good in his Sight, doing what he wants to. as you see he does not love them its not nothing to him to do this but a power trip.
I came home from School one day and found my cat on the front porch with rat trap on his one paw his other paw was broken and has a fish hook going threw his face.I really cant stand most of my neighbors.a couple of years latter i found my cat dead outside and he was still a very young cat.
there definitely are to an extent. a vocoder cannot be used as an instrument, as it does not generate sound. it manipulates sound. the lyrics may not (and in my opinion don't) matter, and it seems they change with every performance, but they're there. even if they arent actual words.
Hold on a tic!Silly me, look what I found: A bullet of sunlight pierces the clouds; golden heaven touches ground I see that childhood toy that hangs above the crib and spins around Except it is suspended from a golden yellow sky With paper mache animals and gargoyles hoisted from it The golden Porsche makes its way up a Great Plains highway Glaring sunlight from its grill We never get a glimpse but there is the suspense Of being hunted by a freak
the sun smells too loud. I can't really think of much else... i guess songs like kids will be skeletons, tracy and take me somewhere nice are sort of happy too.
The first time I smoked salvia I had this song on. It was incidental as I had no idea what the trip would be like, but it crafted it so beautifully, so otherworldly, so apt, I sat with a stream made of fairies weaving its way around me. THUMBS UP! Yeahhh.

this is amazing.
it is probably one of the more difficult things I have ever made myself watch. very unsettling. and that is what makes it genius.
gosh, no words. Thanks for u and for mogwai for these 4 minutes that ive just spent out of my head.
this song frustrates me, cause no matter how hard I try I simply can't figure out the "lyrics".
That being said, this song has tremendous power, and knowing the "lyrics" would probably detract from its beauty.
Incredible stuff.
I know it's only animation but oh my god those poor animals! Love this track, I'll never tire of it.
"best listened to when drunk and relaxed "
good point. i heard this song on MBL 2k6 for Xbox 360 and couldnt stop listening to it.

krásná písnička s perfektním klipem !!!!
The song and video is so heart-breaking and in the same time so powerful.
i so love that song... beautiful....
i love that band
this video would make a man break into tears
beautiful piece of music
Totally love this song - and always feel emotional watching this.
It's raining cats and dogs...
One of the best videos i've seen in a while
Fantastic tune and a very interesting video as it does highlight the amount of freaks on the planet just now.
the song itself is very subdued, the video emphasises this. I think this is an incredibly powerful and sad video, and is very good at portraying our world and nature
i'm starting to cry, and it's just a cartoon. It's almost like the media has desensitised us to real life so much that the only time you see your real emotions is when you see stuff thats not real or music.
Possibly one of the greatest songs ever created
Despite knowing it was animated, I cried.
The song is beautiful, first time I've ever heard it.
I'm getting goosebumps while hearing this.
Real masterpiece...
To me, this is probably the most emotional music vid I've seen...
The point is for the artists to move their audience. They did a great job.
I saw this for the 1st time on one of my country's cable channels. When I saw it, I grew, and I kid you not, /scandalized/ at the unfolding story.

its such a brilliant track. and video!
Good video, fits in quite well and well done. Nice! The video fits perfectly with the right parts of the song.
I'm not ashamed to admit that this video upsets me deeply. Amazing song as well. I am ashamed that I've never paid more attention to Mogwai.
This song use to soothe me. Now, IDK what it will do when I hear it. Thanks video. :-P
crazy. loved this song for so long. never saw the vid. awesome. no i get it.
people like this exist.. but in few numbers.. thank goodness.
I love this song so much, it's absolutely goregous, so I was curious to see the video but now I'm sad that I did. I love animals and it hurts me deeply to see something like this, even if it's animated or completely fake. I actually cried when I watched it. :(
oh my god this is awesome!
That has got to be the awesomest explanation for this video :)
my heart skipped a beat when he let go the the dog at the end

Great song and a fantastically weird but intriguing video! :D
This absolutely slays me
love it
and i agree. i think this is one of the most moving videos i have ever seen!

this song is so haunting
i love this music video
This is sick
always makes me cry

As is the dichotomy of life, without all of the shit that our eardrums endure every day via the cash driven, in-the-pocket radio stations and the tele-visual handshakes this would just be mediocre. As it stands, and as is the way of things, this is epic.

To those who think that this video is sick and senseless, have you never wondered if you are really any different?
sadness.

That guy is one hell of a sadist. But the song is nice. :)

cant wait to see them in LA
pretty good
speechless i am
this almost broke my heart. :(
Maybe its beauty depends on its sadness. Only sensitive people can understand that. For me its an amazing song. I like specially how the song change( very dramatic)
@Enigma316, it's not distortion, they have a thing called a vocoder that modulates the voice with a synthesiser
@SimulacronX
My initial post was merely my take on the animator's fairly obvious though poignantly illustrated perspective. The statement "Do with this knowledge what you will" is a reflection of the animator's theme. But thank you for contributing so eloquent an opinion on the matter.
that sick

Nice one sir.

this song is a fuckin' masterpiece.
I am going to see these guys on 04/20/09. I hope they take me far, far away from this world...
thats so sad but i like it
what animation programme did you use to make the video?
Maybe its beauty depends on its sadness. Only very sensitive people can understand it. For me is an amazing song.
Deep Music
I never watched the video. Now that I watched the video I can never listen to this again... I got sick.
i won't sleep 'till next monday night......Mogwai in Montreal !!!!!!!!!
Conhecer Mogwai foi uma das melhores coisas que já me aconteceu.
Ditto to what everyone else has said. This video needs much more attention as it is particularly unsettling that people like LonelyGirl or whats-her-face gets the viewers. Oh well, such is life.

excelso
i thougth (i may be cruel but) it was funny when the turtle was run over
for the man throw the pets off the top of the building is Doing what is Good in his Sight, doing what he wants to. as you see he does not love them its not nothing to him to do this but a power trip.

Actually, it's Mogwai's best, and arguably the best song ever in my opinion, and in the opinion of many others.

Oh, how i laughed out loud
Tried to look up the lyrics cause i was curious too, and there were none. It just says this song is an 'instrumental' piece.
Figured as much :P
Thanks!
