Hartwell White, if you're saying that Eddie Kendricks sang lead on Don't Send,Me Away from the 1967 album, With a Lot O' Soul, you're incorrect, Otis sang lead.
I didn't know how bad the Temptations was until I saw the movie. I always knew they could sing but I didn't know they had so many replacements. Thank God for Otis Williams vision for singing because he has done an outstanding job in their younger days. God bless the Tempting Temptations :) kmj
Tempts. Could stand the test of time..they're had many lead.and tenors all was so great..but none could stack up against the original tempts..though i treasure them all...
LOL.....I have to laugh at these comments because clearly it shows you that NONE OF THESE PEOPLE KNOW SHIT ABOUT THE TEMPTATIONS HISTORY OR THE ART OF SINGING ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO 5 PART HARMONY Otis Williams is without a doubt the 2nd Tenor voice on EVERY SINGLE LAST TEMPTATIONS ALBUM AND SONG except for the later 90's albums where he went to Baritone....There are TONS of live clips where you can see it and hear for yourselves especially when the Tempts do what's called "Domino Effect" harmonies where you can CLEARLY hear Otis's note True to his creed, Otis has allllways said from the VERY beginning that his strength was the harmonies because he was never comfortable with being a lead singer outside of a few lead parts he always got on certain Temptations songs & he said in a interview "Why fight to sing "Ok" lead when you got incredible lead singers David, Eddie, Paul, Dennis & Ali ?, in comparison to those guys, i'm just happy to be here....Otis could've easily went to Berry Gordy & begged for a solo album if he felt like his voice needed to be showcased but that wasn't his claim to fame and he was all about the group !! The irony of it all is that David, Dennis, Eddie all had good solo careers (The biggest one being Eddie) BUT NONE OF THEIR SUCCESS WAS BIGGER THAN THE GROUP. & didn't even come close...Look how many times Dennis & Ali had came back to the group after leaving but he has sung lead quite a few times on certain albums and held his own by keeping it simple and from what I seen live, THE AUDIENCE LOVES WHEN HE SINGS LEAD BECAUSE EVEN THEY KNOW THAT IT WAS NEVER HIS MAIN THING BUT THEY LOVE WHEN DOES IT WHICH MAKES IT SPECIAL
So very well said. My husband grew up with these guys and knew them and the Supremes and other Motown groups before their fame and he would 100% agree with you. Temptations FOREVER 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Although Ottis Williams didn't sing lead often for the temptations his voice can be heard clearly along with Paul Williams, Dennis Edwards, Melvin Jones, and Eddie Kendricks on such songs as Cloud Nine, as Psychedelic Shack, I Can't Get Next To You and Ball Of Concussion because they switched lead in and out just to name a few. What? Don't believe me go check and remember a lot of people don't know much themselves and feedings others bad info.
OTIS Williams out earned and controlled the other legendary members of the Temptations, yet you cannot hear his voice on a single hit of theirs. Read Richard Street's just released autobiography "Ball of Confusion" to find out how.
He didn't lead on any of their hits but if you can find one temptations record that Otis Williams is not singing 2nd tenor or baritone in the background ill eat it!!....and by the way come to think of it, he took a lead on the temptations HIT"cant get next to you"
This is so true Otis help create the group and was able to hold the group together all of those years and saving the name is a big and more important part than singing.
Listen to "All I Need" by the Temps. You can hear him singing way up there, right under Eddie. Also listen to him in the background of "Try To Remember", and "Old Man River", particularly, in his natural tenor voice, and his melancholy ending to Paul Williams' "For Once In My Life". Check it out! Ciao!!!
Here’s the “true” Temps in my opinion: Otis, Blue, Corn, Ruff, Paul, Dennis, Richard Street, Damon Harris, and Ali Ollie Woodson. Honorable mention to Elbridge “Al” Bryant for being an original member.
@@teddyj.3198 I’ve always been torn on Glenn. I don’t really listen to anything past Damon’s time except for Life is but a Dream cover and Standing on the Top. I’ve listened to some of Glenn’s stuff and it’s ok but it ain’t Eddie or Damon.
@@Frnk_3 That doesn’t do him justice. Leonard had a sweet and styled falsetto. I’d honestly put him above Eddie, above Damon without a doubt. Listen to Silent Night 1980. You’ll see what I mean
Just what I was thinking. I wonder did it ever cross any ones mind that Otis got rid of the others because he was jealous of their ability to sing better than him. He treated them like interchangeable parts when they were not. All the ones that imitate Eddie but don't really sound like Eddie, no one ever had that beautiful voice David had, no soul like Paul and Dennis. Looking at this, it's just showing me employees of Otis.
@randy johnson The classic 5 are Paul, who came with Eddie, David, Melvin and Otis. Eldridge got fired and was replaced by David. No one sounds better than Eddie. All the ones after him are mere imitations of him. You make like the others, the imitators better but they only copied what was already laid out as a blueprint by the others. All of Eddie's replacements copied the style set by him. All the moves are ghosts of Paul's work. All of the rough and smooth tones sung by David could never be pulled off by one singer again. They are often imitated and people who don't know the originators are impressed by the cheap imitation of what was and can never be again. You can sing Michael's songs but it doesn't make you Michael Jackson. You can dance like James Brown but it doesn't make you James Brown. I can sing all of Whitney's song but I will never be her. They aren't replaceable parts like Otis wanted to pretend they were.
@randy johnson Oh poor randy. I must hit a nerve when you have to resort to cursing. You have no point and cursing at me is suppose to impress who???? You???? Lol. If I know nothing you know even less. So carry on your pointless cursing and telling me who I am and what I know, since you know me so well. Limited vocabulary and limited brain usage, try using your brain for more than filling an empty space on your head. It's a muscle. Exercise it.
Wow this man is a legend. If it was left up to the lead singers they would gone long time ago. Otis kept the group together replacing members while others passed away. I think the one could never be replaced was Melvin. To me he was the foundation for what the Temptations stood for. Remember when the Temps and the Tops were battling on stage and you had the Cadillacs and other group performing. And Melvin was singing that bottom of Tops song and Levi Stubbs said shut Melvin. Cause he bringing that bottom on out. And Otis knows how to sing that middle harmony and that was vital part of that group .. LB (Boomer Sooner June 28, 2023 Wednesday
I was always amazed that Otis, the member with the weakest voice contribution to the group had the most to say about any and everything that happened with/to the group. He sounded OK on "Don't Send Me Away" but I always felt that he would have been the member who would have been the easiest to replace.

That's how david got started with the group. Just a fyi, The Primes had a sister group, called the Primettes, Who also changed their name which, Turned out to be the Supremes! Eddie (Cornbread) Kendrick's, And Glenn Leonard, Both were very good, Its just my opinion, That Otis "Damon" Harris was more of a pure singer, As he didn't have to strain to get notes, the notes just seemed to appear. I heard Eddie & Glenn both sing. Early Eddie was good , But started going down, And Glenn seemed to strain a lot. Again, my own opinion. Checkout the Temptations in Paris, 1973.
