    Thank you for this gem! I love Thomas Hardy but despite owning most of his novels, I have never read this one.
    It's taken me away from the troubles we now face in a modern world, full of greed, uncertainty and evil, though those times existed in Hardy's time too.
    I guess the difference is, we have progressed beyond our wildest imagination, to where, at the flick of a switch, we can be eradicated.
    For tonight at least, I have some escape and hope.
    Thank you for this film.

      Vanessa, I have been a student of Bible Prophecy for 49 years. ( I am from a mainline Christian church. ) I totally understand your thoughts and feelings. May I tell you that although we are all stressed to the max, IF you are a Christian, you might consider jumping onboard to learn where we are on God’s Time Clock. By doing this you will become aware of how very, very, very close we are to our departure. This fact will help relieve a portion of your stress, Vanessa, and will also instill in you an excitement beyond belief. When I began my journey 49 years ago, it put an excitement within me, but through the years, as I have marked off one prophecy after another being fulfilled, and how things have completely revved up, I am holding my breath with anticipation. It ALL centers around God’s country. So, what I do is keep one eye peeled toward the sky and the other eye watching Damascus, because the ruination of Damascus is our cue that OUR time has come ! God bless you, and I pray you will catch this excitement, so your stress will lessen.❤️

      @@rojewolf1 I was referring to the fact that we don’t have to see people having sex - we may know it’s happening, but it’s not necessary to show everything to have a great movie. There are many modern movies I cannot watch because of the nudity, sex, language, and gory violence. It’s nice to see a good story can be told with that all that.

    Much better than I expected! A small nitpick though: the postmark on the letter appears to be 1841. But in church they sing the hymn 'Abide with Me' which was not written until 1847. The constant good summer weather and slightly continental looking village made me think at first it must have been filmed in Hungary or Czech Republic as is often the case, so it was quite a surprise to see it was filmed in Jersey.

      The way Thomas Hardy pictured the mentality of some men in this film, was hilarious. Men were almost portrayed like animals, without imagining a difference of perception in a woman.
      The assumption that a woman, especially when she's much younger, should be grateful, or suddenly burst into flames of passion, all because a man proposes a marriage, with ideas about her life's destiny, or she "refuses" the "world" offered to her by that same man, is unthinkable in our world today, the year 2024.
      There are still emotionally uneducated men around, for sure.
      Mainly in Britain, where many (older) men can see only what their mind and willy tells them, due to the absence of proper education and the typical British emotional starvation, preventing empathy with their fellow human beings. Inhibition is a rule.
      It's why British society is in a very poor moral state, losing the guts needed for a revolution thinking for themselves, and acting on it. 👋👩‍🌾

    Such Love!
    I've heard that some believe in, that because You're the Son of Elohim,
    You suffered less,
    during Your distress.
    But then, they completely forget,
    that You're the Son of man, yet;
    Which learned obedience through all Your sufferings,
    but always without any sins!
    Thank You, Lord, that during Your life down here, You stood against all kind of temptation,
    to prepare a way for my salvation!
    I'm so grateful for those precious Words in the garden of Gethsemane,
    in the middle of Your agony ;
    "Abba Father....not as I will, but as You will!"
    Nobody took Your life, Lord,
    but You gave it freely,
    went through all the pain, scorn and slaughter,
    because You love us dearly!
    How can I ever comprehend such Love, which eternal life did bestow?!
    All I can do, is believe and receive,
    forever praise Your Name ; which
    salvation for me became!

    Ah! It's the actress who plays the mother in The Durrells of Corfu! I actually didn't recognize her face initially, but I quickly recognized the voice.

    The father understood how much his wife gave up when she "married for love"--family, familiar society, status, security. She lost a great deal, and he was responsible for making it up to her--a heavy burden for one man to carry, to be an entire social network. The wife died within two years, likely trying to bear a child in circumstances pretty alien to her. No wonder Fancy's father wanted a more assured position for his daughter.
    We like to believe that romantic love can conquer all obstacles, but sometimes it simply cannot. People also need physical and spiritual toughness. Fancy Day was presented as having a bit of both, so her choice might work out. But what a gamble!

    The last picture in the film illustrates this:
    The point in Yalbury wood which abutted on the end of Geoffrey Day’s premises was closed by an ancient tree, horizontally of enormous extent though having no great pretension in height.
