- Опубліковано 29 бер 2024
- It's a very special episode of Time Team News tonight, as we introduce the Finds Shed, Dani's new space for investigating the latest discoveries. Dani is joined by John Gater to hear more about Sutton Hoo, and Guy de la Bédoyère who discusses life in Ancient Rome. We also look at ancient rituals in Classical Mesoamerica, and the rediscovery of military defences once described by Julius Caesar.
Plus, we share a very preview of our upcoming 3-part community dig episodes, heading to UA-cam very soon!

What stories should we cover next on Time Team News?
South devon wreck sites. South West Roman sites and lidar. Dartmoor. Weekly Dani streams...
As I listen to Guy talking about the contents of his books, I'm thinking of the accuracy of Lindsey Davis' stories of Marcus Didius Falco, a Roman investigator who gets in/out of all manner of scrapes. Her depiction of ancient Rome is so full of the details of which Guy just touches on, so perhaps a bit of her background on ancient Rome might be included somewhere in the future???
How about the story from the Isle of Skye about the uncovering of a lost 17th C. village during tree felling at Glen Brittle? Seems they uncovered everything from houses to kilns etc. Wondering what else they discovered?
Any new discovery around Kilmartin Glen?
I would love to see TT collaborate with Tony Pollard and the Waterloo Uncovered folks for some digging in Belgium.
Grateful that Time Team News gives us a glimpse of the global archaelogy scene. I'll be looking up more about the Guatemala dig and other Mesoamerica sites right after I post this comment. Thanks! (Also, Dani - you are doing a fantastic job.)
Fantastic episode! Chock full of exciting news. Can’t wait to see what you get into at Sutton Hoo! And it’s SO awesome to see Guy back for a segment!
Love that Guy has a copy of “Romans For Dummies” on the shelf behind him. That did make me chuckle!
Well, according to Google books, he wrote it, so not _that_ surprising ...
(I had a link in my previous reply, but YT nuked it)
Love the passion of John, gave me lump in my throat, and seeing Guy again is pure bliss, hope he will participate on any roman dig.
What do I want more of? ALL OF IT!!! Every week!!
Doni is an incredibly effective and charming “Presenter” of this wonderful Time Team production! This component of Time Team is so informative. Please keep it coming our way!
Can’t wait to see the Sutton Howe dig
Hoo
During a visit to Culloden last June I was thrilled to see an actual dig in progress! One of the archaeologists explained the reason for several test pits and told us he was actually standing on the Ice age! The museum on site is under pressure for the sacred battlefield to be used for commercial and residential purposes and they conduct a dig every year to dissuade officials from claiming the sacred site where so many lost their lives. I encourage members to visit.
Great seeing Guy de la Bedoyere again. He was one of my favorites. Congrats Guy! I'll have to look for your book!
Yes, please! Books and book reviews would be stellar! I hope that you'd also be able to tell us what formats it's available in. (ebook, braille, hard vs softcover, etc) Love your content!
Good point. Nice to see that Gladius is available on Audible and Populus can be pre-ordered in the same format.
Love the idea of the book club!! Missed the first 9 minutes because I somehow missed the notification. Will definite be rewatching. Always will be a Time Team fan!
Love the idea of a bookclub! 📖 📕 📚
YES! for the books.. super helpful. How about a bibliography for each 3-day dig. In the way done by : "In Our Time" - BBC. Cheers from Brooklyn, NY!
Love the idea of a 'book of the month'!
Also very excited for Sutton Hoo excavating!! 🤗
I like the addition of the book club 😊
At last the Modbury dig or rather the Pits that Carenza ao loved, and a flashing glimpse of the lady herself, I''d recognize those locks anywhere.I was born there in 1937and lived thereunto 1946 when we moved to Plymouth. My grandfather wasTown crier Andy otherGranpa was thePost Master and also had a printing business full of massive victorian printing presses .I have clear memories of all the American troops passing through with all their tanks and trucks on manoeuvres prior to D-day .Everyboyhad collection of shrapnel cartridge cases and machine gun clips and the contrails inthe sky from the aircraft at Bolt Tail chasing the bombers I have a host of storiesI could tell you I.Cant wait for the full Modbury episode .Thanks for these updates they are like fireside chats with a very friendly host.I think a book section would be great. Thank you so much you redoing a great job.
Cheers from Me and Canada whereI have lived since 1967
More Guy!
Hahahah...... 😂I'm pretty sure Helen is going to give John-Geo-Phys a good slapping for that blatant age outing! LoL! 🤣😂
Great new episode btw...Loving the continuance of my favourite show with my favourite people ever!
Can't wait for Guy's new book to be out. I loved Gladius!
I vote YES to the Time Team Book Club and I will order Guy's new book.
Dear Time Team, I want to become a patron of your programme. I absolutely love it. The problem is I never buy anything on the internet because I fear I will be robbed. It seems to me I'm not alone in people of my generation, who recall the excitement that rippled through the community when someone had a phone installed in their house. It was practically front page news 😂. Anyway, sometimes family and friends will ask what I'd like for Christmas, or my birthday. Have you a Scheme whereby Time Team patreon can be bought as birthday or Christmas gifts for loved ones by their friends and family and, if not, don't you think it's a good idea?
I think a book club could be interesting. It depends on how it is done. It might work really well on your Patreon, but I know us who can't be on Patreon (for one reason or other) would still like to participate...of course one of the reasons for not joining Patreon would likely prevent participation in this book club...I still encourage it.
Thanks Dani and the rest of the Time Team crew.
Guy is looking well. 👍👍
Loving the new backdrop and can’t wait for Sutton hoo coverage keep it coming
I had to laugh when I saw ‘The Romans for Dummies’ on Guy’s bookshelf. 😂
This is such a great thing to come out of the Time Team revival. I love this show and the new set it perfect. 👏🏻
I love you, Dani. Here's a hug! So nice to see your shining countenance!
Don't forget, time is running out to get your name on this year's flag! Make sure you have an active Patreon account, Digger Crew and above, and opt-in via the form on Patreon by 1st April: www.patreon.com/TimeTeamOfficial
Who can do that? I'm from Sweden and have tried for a week now to pay for a year but it don't work. I know my card is ok cause I called my bank. When I click to pay the sum is suddenly 0.00 SEK instead of 1554 SEK. Have you blocked people from other countries?
@@bjorreb7487 Hi, thanks for the interest. We don't block any countries and have members from all over the world, so not sure what might be causing this issue. The Patreon Help Center has details on different payment methods available in various countries. Hope this helps. I love these News updates. And I think the book club would be a great addition.
Time Team is awesome!
Yes to book announcements/reviews!!!
Very interesting. I've said it before, but TT chose the best possible presenter for the news updates. Dr. Dani Wooten is a great asset.
Thanks for addressing Mesoamerica!!
A commenr on Guy’s presentation of his book Populus, he described the streetlife if ancient Rome. It was a perfect descriotion of the streetlife of many cities I lived in during the years! Fantastic to see that we haven’t changed much in 2000 years.
Another great video with plenty to interest the viewer. The idea of a “book review” would be a great addition to the programme - something to read while we wait for the next video, what’s not to like!
Book club sounds lovely!!
My suggestion for the book club...'Viking Britain: A History' by Thomas Williams. The best description of Vikings and Anglo-Saxons I have ever read - not one horny helmet in site!
Just pre ordered Guy’s book! I love Roman history and love learning more about the period
Book club is a fabulous idea! I'll suggest "Kindred" by Sykes, a speculative but evidence-based look at what Neanderthal lives were like.
Books books and more books. Yes please. Reviews are so important. Is a book suitable only for academics? Or good for young people as an introduction? Or for me. Non professional but fascinated. I also love links between archaeology and history especially of ordinary people. Not really interested in kings and queens, only as a sort of background to real lives.
Yes to adding book reviews!
Thanks for the update❤
Glad they showed humans next to the excavated spikes. A lot larger than I anticipated.
Bookclub sounds fantastic!
GUY🎉
Book Club is a brilliant idea. G Ire
Love these vids
Excellent news! Can't wait to see Sutton Hoo and everything Time Team!
Dani, like your new background but must confess I'm missing the red geraniums.
Sounds like Guy's book will make our cities look tame.
I really like the idea of a book review spot each month. I shall get hold of a copy of Guy's book "Gladius" as I am going to the british Museum Roman Army exhibition soon.
Yes please to more coverage of books!
I love Time Team news! I'm always discovering new topics to dig into 🤓
Thanks for all the work you do, proud to be a Patreon supporter.
Btw, I saw a bit on Countryfile last week that showed Lawrence in 2013 (on archeology in forested areas), and look what he (and the whole Time Team) are doing now 🙌🏼
I’m tickled about a book of the month segment! Nearly equally tickled by the photo of the Saalburg, a former Roman fort near my hometown of Frankfurt. 😊
Yes to the Book Club, already working my way through Populus (found it on sale a few days early in London) and 100% agree with Sir Tony's quote on the cover!
Looking forward to next weekend
Fascinating archeological coverage, bang up to date. Like the South Hams and world stuff.
I love the idea of a book club but would prefer books already published. Populus looks amazing but is only initially coming out in hardback. As a pensioner I would prefer to buy the cheaper paperback version which is only available from July
Excellent!
Amazing thanks for sharing.
Yes please to a book club!
1:26 I see they're trying to summon Phil
book club... yes please!
Interesting about the ideas of the Mesoamerican findings. Farther north, in the US and possibly into Canada, tobacco is a common offering, usually dried and chopped. It is scattered during a prayer. Tobacco was also a common component of the "black drink" often used by southeastern tribes. Sweat lodges were, and still are, commonly associated with ritual preparation for more formal ceremonies.
Awesome ! Awesome !
I'm up for a book club. Can't wait for the Sutton hoo dig!!
Thank you so much for this report. Looking forward to new discoveries at Sutton Hoo … 😁 Think a book review segment is a brilliant idea. Cheers from Down Under 😁🌴🌴🌴
BOOK CLUB! ok - we are Canadian- politely - heck YES - do the book club idea. Wish you all well!
Still interested in anything involving Robert the Bruce and the Scottish Wars during the late 1200's and early 1300's. Thank you
Book suggestion: Cat Jarman “River Kings”
It’s a few years old now, but the book that just keeps running through my head whenever I think about prehistory or human cultures is The Dawn of Everything by Graeber and Wengrow.
so engrossed in many things, I just tried to increase the volume on my iPad with my TV controller 🤔😜😂
Beginning to agree with Sgt. Joe Friday....just the facts mam...
I would love to have the opportunity to ask Guy some, maybe offbeat questions, about Roman life.
Yes! Hoorah ❤
Thank you for sharing all the news. It was great to Guy again. I am from the US. I am wondering where I wou;d find his books?
Amazon to buy. Or check your local library. I’ve also seen some of his titles on ebook-borrowing apps.
My introduction to archaelogy writing was through Noel Ivor Hume's books on archaelogy at Martin's Hundred and also the banks of North Carolina looking for Roanoke
How about doing a regular feature on chosen archeology societies throughout the UK either as a news feature or short update on the last year’s activities. It could give the local areas publicity and show what they are doing with their time take Star Carr for example in Flixton near Scarborough, North Yorkshire. East Hesleton also nearby.
Sutton Hoo is going to be epic. It's just a shame we have to wait a full year if not a patreon member (why is there tax on the monthly amount pledged?!! Who's getting rich from this?) for the next episode. Thank god there's episodes like this to keep the interest going. I appreciate it takes a lot of time, skill etc to make a full episode, but since it was x2 3 parters, do we need to wait a full year when AI can assist?!!
I miss guy,he could have a programme of his own.
I like the idea of a book club
Honestly, it makes perfect sense for tobacco to be associated with childbirth and midwifery, if you know that tobacco is a pretty powerful vasoconstrictor. Would not be surprised if it wasn't used to deal with post partum bleeding.
I wish I was called Professor Chinchilla.
Has TT News covered any of the Must Farm dig?
Yes … Love would be willing to participate in a book club.
I wonder if the mysterious mushroom shaped thing might have been used for sewing or shaping leather. It looks similar to a tool I remember in the shoe repair shop when I was a kid. It's difficult to judge the size as the objects aren't to scale, but I think the repairman's tool it was 4 or 5 inches across. Of course I was a only a kid so everything seemed bigger. I was always fascinated by all his tools. I think he hammered leather on its curve with a small mallet.
any news on the recent roman finds in west sussex ??
Have I missed the dig you did last year near Corfe Castle? I keep looking for it
The Dig Watch behind-the-scenes coverage is available now on Patreon, and the main episodes will be coming out later this year on UA-cam. Keep a lookout for further announcements.
Will Gladius ever be released in e-book format?
i would love to see a book club...
I’d love to see Dr Alice Robert’s in the book club
anything new at the pre clovis site in texas?
In Guatemala, the ancients worshipped 'Flying Turtles'. They were turtle shaped objects with legs, that carried the Gods around. Your guess is as good as mine.
Book club please !
How can we get involved in the Sutton Hoo dig ?
The idea of a book club is an excellent one, and, writing as a card carrying defender of women, here's 2 recommendations 4u 2 review, BOTH of which are BOTH written and starring those most individual of creature, the adult female of homo sapiens;
1/ Jeanne d'Arc, by Vita Sackville West.
Sophia, Princess, Suffrage, Revolutionary, by Anita Anand..
These should get you started. Thanks for the most excellent content. 🌟👍
❤
Native Americans still offer tobacco when harvesting anything, like from a tree, tree bark. They always offer tobacco before harvesting.
✌️✌️
Best investment I ever made.
It's so sad to watch our beloved characters grow old.
As all of us do, too.
@@nattance1 That's not necessary, I'm just getting younger.😂
With age comes character! Embrace it rather than being saddened by it!
