Zenatello sings Esultate from Otello 1926

Like a steel trumpet Zenatello's voice cuts across the orchestra in the opening of Verdi's Otello. Verdi gives the tenor just 12 bars to establish himself as a commanding man of action: here the crowds part and Otello strides on stage for this first brief appearance and announces the defeat of the Turkish fleet. Perhaps no other tenor has matched the stentorian voiced Zenatello's 1926 version of Esultate, piercingly clean in delivery and with its grace note "gloria" sung to thrilling perfection. The sheer arching triumph of zenatello's high A natural is electrifying. Zenatello took over the mantle of Otello from the creator of the role, Tamagno, and sang it some 200 times before his retirement.
