    Romans 8:32
[32]He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?
I would say that predestination it's very essential when it comes to understanding this parable. I'll just be honest I wanted to be the fourth type of soil, the good soil. I wanted with all my heart. And I dont think its wrong to pray and ask God to make us the 4th type of soil that produces fruit for His glory (I do pray this and am convicted to continue to pray this for myself and for others).
But I don't think that's the point Jesus wanted to teach. The type of soil we are is not our problem but it's God's problem. God will not allow his good seed fall on bad soil. That's why the soil problem is not our problem it's God's problem.
As I said predestination is the key. And the Holy Spirit is the solution.
God is the creator of all things. And doesn't it say in the Bible the Jesus gives us freely all things? (I really need to memorize that verse. But to my credit I started memorizing the book of Romans.)
So predestination says that Jesus created us to redeem us.
Without a clear understanding of predestination I don't think it's possible to understand the truth of this parable.
It's not a matter of just choosing to be the fourth type of soil. God created us so that our identity is the good seed. The whole point of this parable is our identity in Christ. The Holy Spirit brings Jesus to Him. Jesus is the word of God. Since our identity is in Christ, we too are the word of God, the good seed. We are not the word of God as Jesus is, but we are like the word of God in many ways.
So I would say that predestination is really the first step to understanding the full meaning of this parable.
But it is also necessary to understand that Satan also has a seed that he plants in people's hearts. And even a person that understands predestination and identifies himself with the help of the Holy Spirit as in Christ can still be affected by the seeds of the devil. Perhaps David was an example of this with his sin of adultery with Bathsheba. So truly we are struggling Christians in this world but we have a helper to remind us constantly who we are. And we are in Christ. That's our identity. And this helper is always with us to help us to share our identity with others to encourage and strengthen them.
It is so important that we pray that God would establish our thoughts. I used to pray this all the time and I stopped for some reason. But now I'm convicted to return to doing this again.

I think the third category describes a lot of professional athletes. But it describes anyone who at the end of the day loves this world more than Jesus.
