    I noticed you used Uncle Ben's brown rice which is parboiled. That makes a difference in cooking time as compared to regular brown rice. I prefer the parboiled myself but I was out and only had regular brown jasmine and it was under cooked using the 15/5 min time you suggested.

    Hello, just got my Instant Pot and gonna make brown rice..To start my Instant Pot I have to hit the Pressure Cook button..By default the settings are Normal,High, is this correct??

    This might work for Uncle Bens brown rice, but regular brown rice comes out under done as this cook time is much too short.

      I use 1:1 1/2 ratio when I make regular brown rice, 2 cups of rice + 2 1/2 cups of water. Press the manual or pressure cook button and set it to 22 min. When done use the 10 min natural release (let the cooker go into the “keep warm” mode for 10 min) then after the 10 min press cancel and release the pressure ( turn to venting). Hope this helps.

    • @johnharville8007

      @@Luna-xt1nc Unless I'm missing something, a 1:1 1/2 ratio (rice to water) would mean that you would need 3 cups of water for 2 cups of rice. In any case, the cook time specified in this recipe (15 minutes at high pressure, followed by 5 minutes of natural pressure release) is too short and it results in under cooked rice. The cook time you are using (22 minutes high pressure followed by 10 min NPR) is probably much better. The point of my comment was not to learn how to cook brown rice in the Instant Pot (I can google that), but rather just to let people know that the cook time specified here is MUCH too short.

    • @Luna-xt1nc
      @Luna-xt1nc 4 роки тому +1

      John Harville yes I agree, the time on the video is too short but it might be because he is using uncle Ben’s rice. When I cook my regular brown rice I cook it for 22 min and I put 1 c rise and 1 1/2 cup water.

    • @johnharville8007
      @johnharville8007 4 роки тому +1

      @@Luna-xt1nc Yes, and that is specifically why my original comment says "
      This might work for Uncle Bens brown rice, but regular brown rice comes out under done as this cook time is much too short."

      @@johnharville8007 i agree with you John. I was wondering about that because I have been told it takes longer --- about 20-25 minutes. Thanks for the reconfirmation. Just another question; can i use a 1:1 ratio or 1:2 ratio ?? i.e 1 cup rice = 2 cups water, and 2 cups rice= 4 cups water ???? and can we add salt to the rice ???? thanks dude. Umar/Qatari 0764.

    15 isn’t enough. You need 22 minutes to make it nice and fluffy.

      Because Uncle Ben's brand is 'parboiled' rice, and requires less cooking time than conventional brown rice, which is approx. 20-22 minutes.

      I do 15 minutes and let the pressure release naturally for about 10 minutes and it turns out great. Every time I cook it longer, it turns out like mush.

      I always cook rice in broth - it adds the necessary saltiness plus other flavors - cooking rice with plain water is bland - plus I brown the rice a slight bit in a touch of butter before adding the broth which adds a bit of nuttiness to the brown rice

    I have regular long grain brown rice in instant pot as I write: I cooked it for 15mins, then read all of the comments. I have it warming (natural release) for 10 minutes instead of 5 due to comment section. Also, I usually cook brown rice on stove adding the salt and unsalted butter first before the rice. My first time using my IP! I will see results in 10 minutes!
    It turned out with some liquid left I used 1:1 ratio and rinsed the rice which I never do, added salt and butter last, and put the lid back on. Rice was a little firmer than I prefer, next time will increase pressure cook time to 20-22 mins, with rest (warm time) 10 mins. Will also add the salt and butter with the rice first as per usual!

    The pyrex glass measuring cup you used to measure the rice is manufactured for liquid measurements only. You need to buy the stainless steel large measuring spoons which have different measurements manufactured to measure everything except liquid measurements.

      It makes no difference to the outcome whatever you use to measure so long as you use the same item (or one from the same set, or calibrated the same - standard cup measurements differ throughout the world). It is the ratio which is important.

      Pam Hartley one rice to two water is for regular cooking of rice. IPs don’t evaporate as much of the water so 1 to 1 or 1 to 1.25 for basmati brown rice works well. I leave it in keep warm afterwards and it seems to firm up the rice and makes it perfect.

    I have found that everything I have cooked so far (your corned beef recipe was awesome) takes no less than 20 to get to pressure, adding cook time 15mins, natural release time 5mins. It’s almost the true cooking time of 45mims on the stove. Where is the benefit of Cooking brown rice in the IP?

      get a double insert container and cook rice and veggies at the same time. thats the benefit. Do you eat brown rice on its own? :P

      My pressure cooker takes 10-12mins to get to pressure. I timed it yesterday. So this method is quicker and less room for mistakes like with the stove.

      Paulo Killjoy Aguiar I do use BR for a lot of different things. If cooking something delicate like veggies together with BR would they not be mush if cooked at the same time?

      Adrienne Turner I have only had my IP for a couple weeks and each time I use it I note the time it takes to come to pressure (I have not yet made brown rice) it was 20-27mins. Possibly BR would take less time to come to pressure. You are right there is the occasional ‘too wet/sticky’ or ‘stuck to the bottom’ mistakes that can come with stove top cooking.

      Blake K the beauty of the ip is that once you get the right timing you put everything in and forget about it....no fussing with the heat or water and it cooks to such a great texture and taste. I thought br needed an extra cup of water but I'm going to try it in equal parts next time. It was a little wet but after stirring, it was perfect.

    Why didn't you use the rice button instead of manual??

      @Amy-tl2xe 6 років тому +3

      that works best for white rice. brown rice takes longer, hence the manual button.

      Rice button is meant for just white rice. It has smart technology to adjust time/temp for white rice.

      Amy Virginia I'd seen recipes using the multigrain setting for brown rice.

    chopsticks in rice look like incense used in Shinto ceremonies as a way to honor the dead. Some feel that putting chopsticks in rice looks like those sticks.
