Apprentice: "hey Smith, what do we call this new kind of sword?" Blacksmith: *drops sword* "aagh, bastard sword" Apprentice: "Uh ok well you're the boss I guess"
A bastard sword is called a bastard sword because while it is a longsword and designed to be used primarily in 2 hands, the smaller size and shorter handle makes it more effective to be used in 1 hand if you wanted to. It isn't as good as an arming sword in that regard, or as good as a larger longsword used 2 handed, but it can do both well enough. So it is sort of the bastard child between the two.
+I am Shad I really find it funny that Mount and Blade Warband handles the classification pretty well, but never uses the term longsword. The two handed swords they have are: bastard swords (one handed or two handed), two handed swords, swords of war, and great swords.
@@shadiversity the big longsword actualy has its own definition in German we would simply call it a "Zweihänder" so the German names would be (from left to right): "Kurzschwert", "Einhänder", "Eineinhalbhänder", "Langschwert", "Zweihänder" and "Großschwert"

Mostly for stabbing, but it can cut. -Arming Sword - standard one-handed swords. Best balance, and work nice with a shield. -Bastard Sword - halfway between an arming sword and a longsword. More versatile than other types, and my personal favourite -Longsword - the large, two-handed sword, that isn't meant to be used with a shield or just one hand (which isn't to say that you can't, but it's a bad idea). This is the point where swords start leaning away from finesse and towards brute force. -War Sword - halfway between longsword and greatsword: more in reach and force, but less in control. Defintely can't be used with one hand. -Greatsword - the largest type of sword. Made with the simple purpose of "pulverize". It has the impressive reach and probably quite some momentum.

I used to love it when playing pen and paper rpgs...and of course most of the warrior types usually went for the twohander sword beast....once the group is in a narrow dungeon corridor....and enemies appear...the warriors would announce with ill-deserved confidence: "I draw my twohander!"...I would smile and say: " Sorry mate...not enough room for that!"....It was always fun having a proud armored warrior fighting of zombies with his bread knife
No self respecting melee fighter carries **one** weapon... you gotta have a mace/hammer for skeletons, spear/polearm for charging monsters, sword and shield for the monsters that hit harder, etc... .... :)
Diamonds are rare and can only be shaped through craving with a laser or another piece of diamond. Y' think they could've made it back them? (You're likely talking about Minecraft but, like, just go with it.)
There's been a game theory that proved that diamond is actually terrible to use as weaponry and armor in real life. Not to mention extremely heavy and super expensive.
Caerwyn Isabella diamond armour would be a bad decision, heavy so no mobility compared to what you would have with something lighter like bronze or iron, diamonds aren’t nearly as available like iron and steel so you also wouldn’t be able to mass produce for army’s of knights
I say that the Longsword that's just shy of being a greatsword, should be called a grandsword. That way when someone goes over board with the size of the greatsword and makes it unrealistically big, we can call it a great grandsword.
I found out in a book an interesting typoology: a great sword is when a sword is too large or heavy to use it from horseback and loongsword when you can use it properly on horseback. For me this is a good typology, but I don't have a horse.
love your energy mate!! as a re enacter of several years myself and a proficient fighter in armoured combat ie HMB and BOTN your arguments have put into words what i have experienced with all of the sword types u have mentioned. well done sir.
Oh, So shads channel was always making entertaining a fun experience! i love how shad acts like the Master sergeant or captain of a unit he's training xD
Shad you say that the longer version of the longsword doesn't have a name, but I have read in a couple of manuals that these longer longswords were actually called war swords, and that they were considered a subclass of the Greatsword.
Videos like this make me imagine I'm a little kid who got an F on a history test and this lecture from my dad Shad is the punishment that turned out to an awesome blessing in disguise.
You and Skallagrim should do a live stream together. I think you'd two would play fantastically off each other. He actually demonstrates potential great sword techniques and studies medieval combat manuals.
For video games & D&D it helps to merge groups of weapons sometimes. 5th edition D&D pared back the amount of weapons from 3rd edition a lot. Got rid of bastard swords altogether and made longswords versatile. Meaning you can wield in one or two hands. Two hands doing more damage. Looks like the arming sword in D&D, the old longsword, went the way of the dodo in 5e. Really cool to here your boisterous thoughts on the subject Shad.
I highly recommend watching some zweihander techniques and trying to imagine what it would be like having someone running at you whilst performing them. I would crap myself personally and probably back the fuck off.
outer jace probably not, I think the long sword is a bit too short, while the claymore is like the size of the long swords he’s talking about. The zweihander is about right imo but the greatsword is fantasy for sure
Dark souls are actually good, a few inaccuracies but the long sword is actually the size of a real long sword with an appropriately long hilt, they call war swords great swords and the actual great swords they call ultra great swords, but like that is so much better than called the long sword a great sword and not even having weapons like the claymore and zweinhander
Thank you! Your video cleared up what type of sword I have and now I know what the proper damage is that I'll be giving the zombies. I did see once in a book of arms about the Arming sword and I thought it was odd they were calling a long sword an arming sword but I remis I never looked into it. Thank you again!
Wow, so even before having the Dragon Slayer Guts sword still made the great-swords pale in comparison. Now I understand why Solange's movements in Code of Princess are so different from most other games, she's just wielding her real great-sword realistically.
I thought that Aragorn's sword was a bastard sword due to the fact that part of what formed the handle was actually just an extended pommel, meaning it was designed for efficient use of single and two handed grips.
14:00 we could call it a Claymore, since the Scottish Claidheamh-mòr was on average slightly longer than other longswords. Just a thought. Sources: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claymore en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longsword
Everything I know about swords from Monster Hunter lines up with the info from this video. First, Greatswords are body length maybe a bit bigger. (Also body width, and maybe a bit bigger) Second, I knew that arming sword wasnt a longsword from the start, because it's not Katana shaped.
My personal rules of thumb are as follows. A sword with a blade length (*NOT* total length) 60% of the wielder's height are difficult to use at close quarters without half swording. If you're familiar with Silver's opinions on fencing, a sword with a blade length of exactly 60% of the wielder's height will be pretty close to the "perfect length," and Silver's distaste for swords of greater than "perfect length" was due in large part to the difficulty of using them in close quarters. As such, their use will take advantage of their length and reach in a defensive manner, emphasizing wide sweeping blows similar to those employed when wielding a greatsword. However, if they're short enough to fit in a scabbard, they're sidearms and should be called "war swords." This leaves swords with blades between 40% and 60% of the wielder's height. Arming swords and longswords are in this category. They're good cut-and-thrust weapons that are short enough to be effective at close quarters without half swording, and they have sufficient length to parry blows to any part of the body. Now, for some reason, very few arming swords have blades longer than 34 inches - which is about 50% of the height of the typical medieval man. There are arming swords longer than this (~37 inches, Oakeshott type XII iirc), but they're the exception rather than the rule. So, my overall classification scheme goes like this. Blade
295Phoenix Okay, the Valyrian Steel replica of Ice is 57.5 inches long, and the blade itself is 44 inches. Is it big enough to classify as a true greatsword, or is it a longsword?
the second one from the end (between a greatsword and long sword) was often called a war sword. And they wouldnt be carried, but much like a greatsword would be taken on campaign as part of a knights kit and utilized specifically on the battlefield, rather than as a sidearm
I think most understand that when we're playing fantasy medieval type games that we go by their classifications, not historically but... if it's a game like Kingdom Come or Mordhau... they should at least attempt it to be correct.
It's actually a camera trick like old school Adam West Batman, where they would just twist the camera to make it appear that batman was scaling a wall. Shad isn't actually stood up, he is laid down and the whole thing is filmed from above.
Donald Fischer the broadsword term actually refers to a basket hilted sword (think the swords you see in the renaissance) it’s a rather thin sword more akin to a rapier than anything else, kinda weird it’s referred to as a broad sword but eh
@@blakewerner5466 I always thought the basket hilted sword that resembles a rapier but a little thicker was the Claymore (common Scottish sword, correct?)
Donald Fischer the claymore is the Scottish version of the basket hilted sword though it’s more closely related to a long sword or short sword than a broadsword
It was a retronym from the age of rapiers. Since all medieval swords were broader than a rapier, they were all generally referred to by this term. The Scottish "broadsword" was contemporary to the rapier but was far more similar to the then old-fashioned medieval types. Probably the only example of a weapon being called that while still in common use.
"Wait, you're missing the point. The longsword can be used one-handed without the proper feat, that's why it's called a LONGSWORD! And of course it does 1d8 instead of a d10." Joking aside, I really hope this video will clear the confusion. Anyway, I would say it's MAAASSIVE, as you say. We could call it a Greatvideo, couldn't we?
I don't know much on history with swords, but I knew that the first was a short sword, 2nd was an arming sword, and the 3rd was a long sword. Thanks Zelda :)
During your Mordhau examination video when you looked at weapons, you called that longer version of the long sword a "war sword". Is that really about the size of the "unnamed" one you have here? Is "war sword" really a term?
The terms I was taught: Short Sword - about 3', blade length about that of the forearm. Gladius, Rapier Long Sword - blade length of about 3'. Spatha, Saber Broadsword - equal to Long sword, with wider, heavier, blade. Hand-and-a-half sword (Bastard) - about the height of a man, 4.5' blade, 1.5' hilt. Two-handed Sword - Blade length about the height of a man, 6', plus long hilt. Claymore, Zweihander, Estoc Great Sword - ridiculously long
Claymore(great sword) have lenght 120cm - 140cm, Weight 2kg - 2,8 kg Longsword have lenght 100cm - 130 cm Weight 1,1kg - 1,8kg Zweihander(iconic great sword) have lenght ussualy max 180cm Weight 2kg+ Zweihander ussualy max 180cm becouse humas were smaller back in medieval age. But ofc there are over 2m zweihanders but more for show that fight. So eny sword with overall lenght over 120cm is great sword.
one of the best games when it comes to actual historical differences between short, long, and greatswords is the dark souls series. (Ridiculous weapons aside.)
The bastard sword in dark souls is classified as a greatsword even though in reality a bastard sword is a smaller type of longsword. Also what is called a longsword in dark souls is way too short to be a longsword . And the katanas are waaaaaaaay too long , longer than some greatswords in dark souls 2.
short sword (1h + shield option) arming sword (1h + shield option) bastard sword (hybrid 1h or 2h) broad sword (2h) long sword (2h) great sword (2h) can you also talk about other culture's swords.. like rapier? zweihander? kris? samurai etc?
On Aragorns sword: It's probably described as a greatsword in books because it was originally forged for Elendil. The thing is, he was 7'7", so to the average man, it looks a lot more like a greatsword; I did some quick calculation, and it would probably be about 65" from pommel to tip if it was average sized for Elendil's proportions.
actually a bastard sword isn't defined by length but by the iconic hilt a bastard sword can be smaller than an arming sword and larger than a longsword but it must have the iconic hilt
interesting. I had not heard this explanation before. do you have a source explaining it? not trying to say you are wrong, just interested in seeing the difference.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classification_of_swords#Bastard_sword Bastard Sword is as you will see a Modern term. Hand and a half was more time period correct. The term Bastard was so much of an insult they would dare not disrespect their blade by calling it such.
so the fact that the nickname for a bastard sword is hand and a half sword has nothing to do with length of the blade huh? just the hilt... Riiiiiight... wtf is the point of the hilt if the sword isnt larger and longer than usual swords? it would be pretty retarded and non-funtional having the hilt of a bastard sword on a rapier. the hilt is designed so the wielder can use the sword one and two-handed at anytime.

@@ebucwalter well I mean longswords were quite light -- 3 to 5 pounds. Perhaps a dex requirement instead?
I used to love it when playing pen and paper rpgs...and of course most of the warrior types usually went for the twohander sword beast....once the group is in a narrow dungeon corridor....and enemies appear...the warriors would announce with ill-deserved confidence: "I draw my twohander!"...I would smile and say: " Sorry mate...not enough room for that!"....It was always fun having a proud armored warrior fighting of zombies with his bread knife
ChunkyLover ataoldotcom But he could thrust with it.
No self respecting melee fighter carries **one** weapon... you gotta have a mace/hammer for skeletons, spear/polearm for charging monsters, sword and shield for the monsters that hit harder, etc... .... :)
As said before he could thrust with it, but he could also half sword with it.
What about, you know, half swording and using a twohander as an improvised spear?
Dude that's cruel

Where is the Diamond Sword?
Diamonds are rare and can only be shaped through craving with a laser or another piece of diamond. Y' think they could've made it back them?

TL DR: The Greatsword is huge.
No, longer than that.
Not even close.
Still needs to be longer.
Almost.
That's big enough.
Steps to making a greatsword:
1. Make it big
2. Make it bigger
3. Repeat Step #2
@@TurtleButter Blacksmith: Bigger. No, bigger. BIGGER. I SAID BIGGER GOD DAMN IT. *DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHAT BIGGER MEANS?*

I found out in a book an interesting typoology: a great sword is when a sword is too large or heavy to use it from horseback and loongsword when you can use it properly on horseback. For me this is a good typology, but I don't have a horse.
Checking in 3 years later, did you get a horse?

Actually, in D&D, a long sword was the third one. It even has the ability to be held with both hands to do more damage, versatile.

Shad you say that the longer version of the longsword doesn't have a name, but I have read in a couple of manuals that these longer longswords were actually called war swords, and that they were considered a subclass of the Greatsword.
You mustve got through to him, he brought this up in a later vid
what video? I wanna watch.
Teenage Fitness I was just gonna talk about that. Now I see I don't have to go through the trouble, thank you.
Teenage Fitness thank you your some one who actually knows what your talking about he is the blind leading the blind lol

Probably the best and most concise video about different types of swords
A great-sword
"Do you think maybe he's compensating for something"
Thankyou! I was starting to become aware that the names of swords weren't exactly what I thought they were, now you've cleared it up for me.
This video helped me a lot building swords for my game without misconceptions. Thanks Shad!
0:55 The passion this man has for the subject. Extraordinary!
When I think of a great sword I think of the Zvehandler.
The Zweihander is the best example of a greatsword, especially because of the reach, since it was historically used to fight spearmen and pikemen
Siegfried... bring me my Flammenschwert Zweihänder.
I highly recommend watching some zweihander techniques and trying to imagine what it would be like having someone running at you whilst performing them. I would crap myself personally and probably back the fuck off.
I either think of the German Zweihander or the Scottish Claymore.
@Prussian Eagle It's basically a greatsword.
I wonder if he'd agree with dark souls sword classification.
outer jace probably not, I think the long sword is a bit too short, while the claymore is like the size of the long swords he’s talking about. The zweihander is about right imo but the greatsword is fantasy for sure
Probably not because of ultra greatswords
@@AllantheBob Dark Souls zweihänder looks bigger than irl tho
Dark souls are actually good, a few inaccuracies but the long sword is actually the size of a real long sword with an appropriately long hilt, they call war swords great swords and the actual great swords they call ultra great swords, but like that is so much better than called the long sword a great sword and not even having weapons like the claymore and zweinhander
@@jyessiterriaynt1131 I do appreciate souls naming the blades, it really adds some spice to the world
Thank you! Your video cleared up what type of sword I have and now I know what the proper damage is that I'll be giving the zombies. Marcelo Bassalo same
Wow, so even before having the Dragon Slayer Guts sword still made the great-swords pale in comparison.
The bastard sword is a long sword variant so Aragorn's sword would still be a long sword.
14:00 we could call it a Claymore, since the Scottish Claidheamh-mòr was on average slightly longer than other longswords. Just a thought.

Shad you're pretty cool man, first time i've seen your vids. Love the passion man, and that you like comics lol
Question from my days of Oblivion and Morrowind: What would classification would a Claymore fall into? Great or Long, or something else?
James Silver www.keithfarrell.net/blog/2018/02/what-is-a-claymore/
Greatsword
Warsword
Everything I know about swords from Monster Hunter lines up with the info from this video.
First, Greatswords are body length maybe a bit bigger. (Also body width, and maybe a bit bigger)
Second, I knew that arming sword wasnt a longsword from the start, because it's not Katana shaped.
Wow you’ve come a long way
My personal rules of thumb are as follows.
However, if they're short enough to fit in a scabbard, they're sidearms and should be called "war swords."
This leaves swords with blades between 40% and 60% of the wielder's height.
Blade
i love your energy lol
Austin Worthington Sugar(man)...

So, would you classify the Stark sword Ice as a greatsword or a longsword?
I forgot what Ice looked like in the show, but in the book it was longer than Robb was tall...definitely a greatsword.
295Phoenix Okay, the Valyrian Steel replica of Ice is 57.5 inches long, and the blade itself is 44 inches. Is it big enough to classify as a true greatsword, or is it a longsword?
Educational videos like this keeps me coming back
the second one from the end (between a greatsword and long sword) was often called a war sword. And they wouldnt be carried, but much like a greatsword would be taken on campaign as part of a knights kit and utilized specifically on the battlefield, rather than as a sidearm
“Just my short sword and your long knife”
I think most understand that when we're playing fantasy medieval type games that we go by their classifications, not historically but... if it's a game like Kingdom Come or Mordhau... they should at least attempt it to be correct.
Dark Souls seems to be pretty accurate with its terminology.
"You can't parry with a greatsword."
For Honor's Highlander: *Laughs in Scotland*
This was helpful and educational. From now on, when I hear longsword, I will think of a man at arms who doesn’t have a shield.
How do the swords stick to that wall?
Magic. . . and by magic I mean nails. INVISIBLE NAILS!
Well, now you said it, it seems obvious.
Dumb me
Some nails to hold the guards up is enough to lift the sword up
Also MAGICAL INVISIBLE NAILS!!!
It's actually a camera trick like old school Adam West Batman, where they would just twist the camera to make it appear that batman was scaling a wall. Shad isn't actually stood up, he is laid down and the whole thing is filmed from above.
Shadiversity Are you a wizard?
What about the term "Broadsword?" I always heard that growing up...
And of course it does 1d8 instead of a d10."
Joking aside, I really hope this video will clear the confusion. Anyway, I would say it's MAAASSIVE, as you say. We could call it a Greatvideo, couldn't we?
Paolo Morresi Yes lets hope the confusion can be cleared up a little. Thanks for liking!
so you didnt even watch the video... he explained how can longswords be used in one hand.
Ahahahha and you did read my whole comment. Sure.
And so began my 4 year love afair with swords. Thanks Shad!
This is an old video so Shad probably didn't know what to call the unnamed one at the time, and a warsword is an actual thing so yeah.
So basically (notice my capitalisation) a Long Sword is a great sword and a Great Sword is a long sword, while a Short Sword is just a short sword
This is awesome! OMFG
The terms I was taught:
Short Sword - about 3', blade length about that of the forearm. Gladius, Rapier
Long Sword - blade length of about 3'. Spatha, Saber
Broadsword - equal to Long sword, with wider, heavier, blade.
Hand-and-a-half sword (Bastard) - about the height of a man, 4.5' blade, 1.5' hilt.
Two-handed Sword - Blade length about the height of a man, 6', plus long hilt. Claymore, Zweihander, Estoc
Great Sword - ridiculously long
The Bastard Sword is my prefered sword. Middleground, the best of two worlds.
Clearly it's a small sword, medium sword, large sword, and family size sword
It is actually a double sized swprd with extra cheese
Claymore(great sword) have lenght 120cm - 140cm, Weight 2kg - 2,8 kg
Longsword have lenght 100cm - 130 cm Weight 1,1kg - 1,8kg
Zweihander(iconic great sword) have lenght ussualy max 180cm Weight 2kg+
Zweihander ussualy max 180cm becouse humas were smaller back in medieval age. But ofc there are over 2m zweihanders but more for show that fight.
So eny sword with overall lenght over 120cm is great sword.
one of the best games when it comes to actual historical differences between short, long, and greatswords is the dark souls series. (Ridiculous weapons aside.)
+Mac Thomas ULTRA GREATSWORD!!!
+Stephen j Actually katana come in little size variant, long katana exist but they are called nodachi.
short sword (1h + shield option)
arming sword (1h + shield option)
bastard sword (hybrid 1h or 2h)
broad sword (2h)
long sword (2h)
great sword (2h)
can you also talk about other culture's swords.. like rapier? zweihander? kris? samurai etc?
On Aragorns sword: It's probably described as a greatsword in books because it was originally forged for Elendil. The thing is, he was 7'7", so to the average man, it looks a lot more like a greatsword; I did some quick calculation, and it would probably be about 65" from pommel to tip if it was average sized for Elendil's proportions.
10:27 Shad becomes an infomercial.
actually a bastard sword isn't defined by length but by the iconic hilt a bastard sword can be smaller than an arming sword and larger than a longsword but it must have the iconic hilt
a bastard sword is also referred to hand and a half sword due to the hilt
interesting. I had not heard this explanation before. do you have a source explaining it? not trying to say you are wrong, just interested in seeing the difference.
Darkgeasss not offhand if you research you should find the source I did when I was unsure as I had heard multiple explanations
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classification_of_swords#Bastard_sword
Bastard Sword is as you will see a Modern term.
Shad acording to MMORPG the first sword is a long dagger haha
Shad: “Greatswords in video games are too small.”
Great sword of Artorias: “Am I a joke to you?”
Fume Ultra Greatsword: "Am I more of a joke to you?"
I always referred to the longer longsword as a warsword, use for carving up enemy pike and shield formations.
