  • Lynne is ready for a retirement road trip with her boyfriend, Bob…But isn’t going anywhere until she sells her tidy, two-story urban home. Other properties in the neighborhood have sold within days…But Lynne’s ‘unique’ home has languished on the market for a whopping six months. Sofie says the high price and impersonal, dated décor are to blame.
In order to create warmer interiors in line with the rest of the neighborhood, Sofie comes up with a $5,000 battle plan to add character and polish. Lynne is committed from the start…And as Anthony and the team repaint, refurbish, and install a ‘wow feature’ fireplace, Sofie improves the home’s curb appeal by painting the front door a vibrant red. The transformation is emotional for Lynne…But will her determination pay off?

to be honest, I do not understand why people fix up their home to sell it. I understand cleaning and maybe a lick of white paint, but how do you know what the next person wants ? if they dont like your choice, they will pull it out and re do it. So that is 2x the money down the drain for nothing. Not to mention that you are spending money on a house you wont be living in anymore. It makes zero sense to me.

The thing I look at is the layout because that can't be changed without major money, and are the systems all in good order. I can paint and I like to choose my own colors anyway. Who doesn't want more storage space/exhibition space for sculpture or art, etc. that is pretty as well as practical, a cozy fireplace (especially north of the Mason-Dixon line). I'm also a fan of painting the front door a brighter, happy red (not burgundy or orangey). Do you wiggle when you hoover? Sofie made the house look wonderful. This is one of the better makeovers. However, as a Realtor, I would have asked the seller to empty the house completely. The likely problem was that would-be buyers were focusing on tired, out of date furniture rather than the spacious features of the house. An empty house is easier to sell than one whose furnishings are a distraction.

@gokfvisstmodern, I agree. It is better to sell a house empty than with dated decor and weird paint colors. It also may be better because of room configuration. I just sold my late parent’s house in the Midwest. Mint white oak hardwood, fresh ivory paint throughout nearly 4,000 square feet, Anderson windows and three sets of Anderson sliding doors. BUT the open space great room, and its adjoining open space kitchen and breakfast room and all those sliding doors meant the great room was very difficult to arrange. Left empty it seemed enormous and people just assumed their furniture and TV would fit easily. The people who bought it ended up getting all new furniture for that room when they couldn’t configure it with their furniture which wasn’t that old. They actually contacted me to see how my mother had done it.

I bought a house that hadn’t sold for years. It was so dated. I negotiated for the owners to put on a new roof and do mold remediation in the attic. The walls were painted colors like mint green in the living room. The dining room light must have been from the 70s at the latest. For some odd reason, they had a vanity light with big bulbs shining in your eyes above the sink. Photos had a different light, so perhaps someone tried to upgrade? The kitchen design was original from 1957 except for the floor. You could only fit a small refrigerator. It had a portable dishwasher and a range dated from the early 80s. The washer was from earlier than that, maybe late 60s? The house was filled with 2 prong outlets. In my fact, I found one down in my basement I needed to replace. I have a brown bathtub, the 1957 original. The outside of the house has two different color paint for some odd reason, as if someone had extra paint from the trim and just decided to use it up. Or maybe they were painting trim and messed up, so tried to cover it up. Thanks to my dad who can do a bit of electrical work, I was able to make a big difference just from replacing lights and outlets and painting. I’m in the process of a full kitchen remodel, and my bathroom is next. It has a big yard, a nice front porch and deck in the back, triple pain windows which per my neighbor are valued at $1000 each. It’s not a show home and never will be, but houses just have to be updated and renovated over the years. At least I can update it according to my vision and not someone else’s.

I HATE carpeting! It's the worst floor covering ever. No matter how much you clean it, it will always have dirt, pet hair, etc. trapped in it. So - we bought a chalet dormer bungalow at slightly under market price simply because we fell in love with it. Spacious, open plan, very pretty from the street, but neglected for over five years. We have spent one hundred and ten thousand pounds so far; new roof including the conservatory and a flat roofed extension, new heating system, bespoke furniture, new windows, replaced the showers, had trees removed from the front garden, filled in a neglected smelly pond. We absolutely love it. So do all our visitors. We've made it our own and are very happy living there.
