    Agree 100 percent. "Let it go" is such a good motto, especially when people are trying to control and dominate other people when they themselves are always promoting "freedom" - it's a logical fallacy.

    I'm glad that you're putting out your point of view. I think more pagan/polythiest voices should be talking about this controversy so more people can be educated on other religions and not assume that anything religious is automatically Chirstan.

    As a fellow trans pagan who lives with hardcore conservative Christians, I appreciate this video. My parents lost their sh*t over the Olympics Opening Ceremony. They’re boycotting the whole Olympics now. It’s pretty wild to me.
    I told my parents about the fact that the Drag performance wasn’t the last supper, but they told me that I was being influenced by Satan, and that I was confused. They don’t know I’m trans or pagan, for further context.

      I can only begin to imagine how hard it must be for you to exist in a household like that... It's so horrible when people, especially as close as your parents, deny the facts and insist on invalidating you. I hope you're holding on out there. Much love ❤️

      Bro you need to save all the money you possibly can and move away from them, like FAR AWAY to a place where you can be free and they would literally have to get on a plane just to try to see you. I moved over 3,000 miles from mine and live a completely "out of the closet" life and finally having second top because the first one was so botched it grew back even worst than before,( like an axolotl ). Now finally having surgery again, back on testosterone and I left that place over 14 years ago. You don't need them to influence your life and make you feel weird about what you like or who you are. I cut so many people off Bro and I'm so happy I did, When you do that, you make room for the people that actually matter to come into your life filled with awesomeness man.

    As a queer, pagan, neurodivergent, downright tired Classics major -- thank you so much for this. I am both dreading and excited for my classmates and professors' takes on the opening ceremony (because of COURSE I won't be able to shut up about anything involving our Gods in the modern spotlight, and I trust my closest + nerdiest friends to sufficiently analyze this whole thing).
    But the dread is starting to fade a bit. I already know that one prof in my department has argued in favor of genocide, while most others have just been silently complicit, so I can probably guess how they reacted; I know what I'm here for. Not only to have fun deeply studying the special interests I've had since age 8, but to find and establish community. To fight for the collective, as a collective, with our past in mind and our soul in the present. Spiritual sanctuary and practical motivation, relentless curiosity and a grounded love for humanity, _especially through times of elevated strife, rampant ignorance, and festering hatred like these._
    Conservative Fascist Christians can call it tacky, overbearing, the queerest, most "abhorrent" Olympics yet... but I think Dionysus is just getting warmed up. 💜

    • @TheQueerVikingBro
      @TheQueerVikingBro  2 місяці тому +1

      I can imagine how many different thoughts there could be on this topic within the Classics community... my main interest is precisely the use of (usually Scandinavian) history and religion in a modern context, so I fully get how exciting this must feel. It would obviously be nicer if everyone just saw it as a cool and innovative way to present and honour the gods of the Ancient Olympic Games tho....

    I am a queer Pagan too, and the American religious Right outrage about the Paris opening ceremony tells you all you need to know, that education in the USA is seriously lacking. The Transphobia and general sexism around Olympic athletes is so stupid.

    • @TheQueerVikingBro
      @TheQueerVikingBro  2 місяці тому +1

      Maybe they also really enjoyed being in the spotlight for quite a while worldwide (Elections coming up and such) and now suddenly the world is focused on the Olympics instead of them, so obviously something must be wrong with the Olympics 😭. Man I'm glad there are still some relatively sane people left in the States, but it would obviously be better if more people had access to a factually correct education.

    Paganism is inclusive and tolerant of other believes in the world where Abrahamic religions does the opposite of that

    • @TheQueerVikingBro
      @TheQueerVikingBro  2 місяці тому

      Yup! Obviously there are some vehemently anti-Christian modern pagans too, but most just want to live in peace with eachother and the world. Maybe it's because paganism does not really rely on "converting people", anyone can become a pagan if they so choose.
      Also, like the Romans, if you already believe in multiple deities then one more is really nothing crazy, while if you only believe in one God, there could not possibly be more...

  • @MakiPcr

    I went and looked for the painting the organizer claimed he was representing, and I think he's lying. Also Paris can paint itself Pink and show off drag but it will never stand for queer people if it condones the genocide of Palestinians, including queer Palestinians, by allowing Israel to participate in the games (while banning Russia)

    • @TheQueerVikingBro
      @TheQueerVikingBro  2 місяці тому +1

      @@MakiPcr Let’s not forget that Israel itself also uses pinkwashing to present itself as a queer friendly country. The Olympic games and western politics are full of hypocrisy and controversy, but the thing with the opening ceremony is just not one of them. The organizer was inspired by multiple paintings. There are multiple paintings called the Feast of Dionysos. Just like the Last Supper, it is a mythological story, open to multiple interpretations.

    • @MakiPcr
      @MakiPcr 2 місяці тому

      @@TheQueerVikingBro I'd read it was The Feast of the Gods, who is the painter of The Feast of Dionysos?

    • @TheQueerVikingBro
      @TheQueerVikingBro  2 місяці тому

      That's what I'm saying. It's not a painting. The paintings of that name or similar names are inspired by an Ancient Greek festival called the feast or banquet of Dionysus. The segment of the openings ceremony in which it was presented was called "festivité" (festivity).
      At the end of the day all art is directly or indirectly inspired by something the artist has looked at in their lives. Even if some people find it similar to the Last Supper painting, that does not mean it is the direct inspiration.

    Unfortunately, I couldn't see the ceremony, and videos are now censored, but I have seen micro-clips of the drama. I am atheist, but my opinion about it is somehow different than yours: as the mainstream culture is, burning a raibow-like flag on a UA-cam video is to attack the LGBT community; but actually it could be a symbolic action for some other things, like... criticizing delusional ways and ideals. However, as the mainstream meaning of the flag is "LGBT rights" burning it without disclaimers may be considered offensive by action or omission, and the interpretation wouldn't be true, but would be valid. The same for the not-last-supper scene: christianism is the dominant religion on the western world, and Wikipedia says christians are still around 35% of french people; then, there are too much possibilities of the scene would be "mis"interpreted.
    In short, for me, it was an interesting edgy performance, but not a spectacle for everyone to enjoy; that's why I can't condemn the offended people. And, if the artist have to explain it too much, they did something wrong.

    • @TheQueerVikingBro
      @TheQueerVikingBro  2 місяці тому +2

      @bregnevakker5404 Well, it's not really the artist's fault that people misinterpret their work. That happens all the time. Christianity takes inspiration in their imagery, teachings and holidays from other religions, so it should not come as a shock that a scene from Greek mythology has some similarities to Christianity.
      Even if it is still the biggest religion in the Western world, does not mean it does or should have any authority to criticize and censor what a director decides for their actors to perform.
      These same people who keep saying other (generally queer, left-wing) people are "easily offended snowflakes" find ways to be offended even when it's not about them...

    • @bregnevakker5404
      @bregnevakker5404 2 місяці тому

      @@TheQueerVikingBro Hmmm... for me, everybody has the right to criticize and don't consume whatever they doesn't like, because they are simply showing their opinion and reacting against what they don't like. And the "easily offended" problem is... well... complicated: I think people should try to make a rule for the game: or they both can offend and go mad because the other said and makes certain things, or no one should... Or balance it, and make a decent dialogue instead of cancelling and mocking each other... but a strong drama sells better than a calm conversation between two people who think differently like the one we are having right now. 😓

    The drawings were criticisms of terrorists exploiting a religion, they were not an attacks on a religion. Your choice of words could have been way better than to make it seem like the natural consequence of making drawings is to get killed. Do not take responsibility away from those monsters.

    • @TheQueerVikingBro
      @TheQueerVikingBro  2 місяці тому

      @Ole_Rasmussen What 😭 I am only saying how far people are willing to go when they feel their religion is being attacked. Which is exactly what happened in the Charlie Hebdo attacks. Making a visual depiction of Mohammed is a direct attack on Islam, since it is not allowed in that religion. Terrorist attacks are not representative of a whole religion, just as these Christians being angry at the opening ceremony are not. But it still shows how far people are willing to go to defend their religious beliefs.

    just to clarify, Israel and Palestine are not currently at war. Israel is fighting a terrorist group called Hamas (although, that does not mean their actions in Gaza should be condoned.). other than that, i agree with your points. i just keep hearing stories about Christians going hog-wild over absolutely nothing, and i can't help but find them distasteful. mind you, this distaste stems from reasons deeper than simple internet stories, but i fear a comment containing those reasons would be much too long.

      No, Israel has been "mowing the grass" in Gaza for 70 years. They are an apartheid state and they need to be held accountable.

    • @TheQueerVikingBro
      @TheQueerVikingBro  2 місяці тому +5

      @diobrando4938 The state of Israel has been created on Palestinian ground, with the intentions of provinding a safe space for Jews after World War II. Unfortunately, what Israel is doing to Palestinians right now is surprisingly similar to what happened to them during the Holocaust. The existence of a terrorist group should not give a state the right to target innocent citizens...
      All this is actually pretty relevant because it's the two other Abrahamic religions fighting for their right to live on their "Holy Land" in the Middle East. Because some old book promised that land to them (spoiler: the Bible).
