  • Former speaker of the house Bronwyn Bishop says Treasurer Jim Chalmers is “at dead odds with the RBA” and “does not want” his new federal budget tested.
    “The one thing he doesn’t want to be is tested,” she told Sky News host Paul Murray.
    “If you go too long, you will be tested and if he is wrong, he is toast.”

    Two surplusses due to a massive increase in PAYG revenue for the government, fuel excise increases and commodity prices increasing higher than expected. Not one single aspect of that is due to responsible fiscal management from grim Jim. None of those gains passed onto the Australian tax payer.

    How about spending cuts?
    How about some cuts to red tape?
    How about some cuts to immigration?
    How about cutting subsidies to useless projects?
    How about some cuts to the ideological pontification?
    Then we grow a robust economy and confidence goes up. That will do a hell of a lot more than 300 bucks sweetening on the power bill.

    On a serious note, the Secretary of the Treasury needs to be sacked. He was one of the architects of JobKeeper being too excessive and not targeted - helping fuel inflation which persists to today. Now that he works for the Labor team with the change of government, he is pretending to be doing pseudo economics by advising on a $300 sugar hit to artificially get inflation down temporarily. The guy is untouchable in Canberra - even Chalmers, being relatively young and a graduate in political science rather than an economist, is intimidated by him. Philip Lowe lost his job over this whole inflation mess yet the guy who sat on the RBA Board and leads Treasury is the teflon bureaucrat.

    The way they are going through the power companies to give people the electricity rebates is disappointing with some people going to miss out.
    The rent assistance increase is welcomed by everyone on a government payment.
    They could have done more such as fuel tax reductions and some more tax adjustments.

      Rent assistance increase only benefits landlords. Gives them another excuse to up your rent.. And those living in community housing or public housing get reemed through those agencies because of it as they class it as more income . Its ridiculous.

    • @MT-lv3ls
      @MT-lv3ls 19 днів тому +2

      Fuel excise does nothing, within days of it being removed the price of fuel rose 25-30 cents to cover the loss and nothing changed at the retail level as a result. Rent assistance is the same, it won't help - all it does is tell all the investors that govt money is now on the table and of course that will push up the prices as a result. As for the energy bill, as soon as people see that big fat zero on their bill - no one will care at all. That feeling of paying nothing will become entrenched in the voters minds and of course will now demand it to be permanent. Without ever thinking about the usual rises in prices done by them, who of course will just get more tax dollars that would help you a lot more in the end.
      The best thing of course is to actually have proper tax policy, one that doesn't just give a number one is forced to pay and another is not and then allow tens of billions to be lost each year through avoidance and structuring. Proper means testing or removal of things like negative gearing offsets, franking credits and others would be a help too.
