  • Whether casting sculptures from human excrement or paying sex workers to have a line tattooed on their backs, Spanish artist Santiago Sierra is a provocateur whose art raise headlines.
We filmed his latest performance piece at Tate Modern and asked him about this and other controversial works. Contains some strong language.

He said it best at the end when describing his work and the type of people who view his art: mostly high class... And "these people become uncomfortable because it's a portrait of themselves." Yes, we are all connected in society despite the walls that separate us and build illusions of wealth...

I have a problem with the idea that simply paying these people.. usually people who can't really afford to turn down the money somehow makes what is done to them okay and not exploitative. I generally like the work, but I do have a problem with that exploitation element.

I had the opportunity to work for S. Sierra on his 'Loudspeakers' project for the Biennale in Venice. He is bright, witty and creatively forward. His work makes us think and reflects our world and the challenges of human beings today.

Nothing "justifies" exploitation, that's what makes it exploitative. @Estragon17

Why is the Tate happy to host Sierra's homeless women facing the wall performance but reject to show von Hornsleth's Homless Tracker project?

Agreed, but what I am saying is that the work does not justify the exploitation.

But its what most of exploiters do and Sierra don't want to be a good person. He is like most people in this world.

@Estragon17i believe the exploitation is essential for the work's meaning, otherwise it would conceptually feeble if not pointless

Such a coward!! Exploiting other people, and then with such a lack of courage that he doesn't dare to show his own face in the interview!! His name is still a brand...
