I saw this movie twice. I thought it was compelling and very well done. No one can say for sure what took places between Maria and Onassis but according to her letters she loved him and missed him a great deal. She was devoted and passionate.
Angelika has foreign films that are lacking in good story telling and plot archs. I hope that this documentary is actually interesting in the story telling aspect of Maria Callas's life.
This was the worse of the Callas movies and documentaries. Tons of footage of her being followed by reporters, footage others cut for obvious reasons. The one saving grace is it didn’t portray her relationship with AO as one of victimhood. It was the love affair of both their lives and they were friends through and through, very few lovers are.
What you say about Onassis is so true. According to Nicolas Gage, author of Greek Fire, the relationship between Callas and Onassis remained (even after their breakup) the most important bond in each of their lives.
Even tho onassis physically beat her & verbally abused her by saying things like "you're only good for f*****g", ''you're a useless dame", "I can get away w a lot w Maria, but I could not get away w hitting her". There's a testimony by woman who worked as marias French dresser where she witnessed Ari hitting Maria. There's a photo of her afterwards onstage & she looks swollen & off. Ari was a pos. Im glad Jackie O gave him a run for his money
