Hello! Good to see you back on the Tube. Improvements is on my Kindle. Who knew? Due to your influence, I've read most of the Carol Shields books and loved each one so much. And also from your suggestion, I read The Animators, which I just wallowed in. Now, I'm off to the library, to find more Silber books. I hope they have the ones I've put on my list. Thanks for this informative and interesting video.
Replying to my post above. I forgot to mention that I'm requesting all the Towes books. She's so prolific. I hope the library has all of them or can get them at another branch. Thanks again for all the wonderful information about these interesting authors.
Hello Priscilla, I'm honored that you did my tag. Your videos are always so interesting and smart. Two booktubers have nominated "All My Puny Sorrows." but I have to be in the right frame of mind for the subject.. However, I just ordered Improvement from my library because I loved your reading and had never heard of the author. I can't wait to read Your writing. Sending loving Aloha from across two oceans.
Thank you so much for creating the tag and for tagging me, Maya! Yes, I understand needing to be in the right frame of mind. I hope you enjoy Improvement!
Based on your recommendation, I picked up Improvement at the library and just finished it. I very much enjoyed it, especially how Silber brought everything/everyone's stories together. Thanks for introducing me to a new-to-me author. I'm looking forward to reading more.
Such excellent choices for authors all around, and I'm a fan of all of them. Did you ever read Silber's Household Words? It was once of the earlier conventional novels you mentioned. That was a novel that was extremely subdued, but for some reason has stuck with me for years. It's a type of biographic treatment, much like Shields's work. I am going to think about who I'd choose for the tag outside the women you highlighted. If every character in a novel just went to therapy, we'd be bored to death. (Though I do like a good therapy novel!) haha. So good to see you making a video and I hope you have a good weekend coming up.
I haven't read Household Words, but from your description I clearly need to prioritize it. I have Lucky Us, which was the last conventional novel she wrote. She's so great, even in interviews. I also like a good therapy novel, but those are usually only good if someone's really messed up (therapist or patient). Speaking of that, have you watched Shrinking? I look forward to seeing your version of this tag if you decide to do it. Have a lovely weekend!
I cannot read Munro any more. But Shields is a great choice! I reread The Stone Diaries last December and it was great all over again. Yeah, I think I read Shields' Austen biography in Jan or Feb this year. I am still being reproached from the shelves by The Animators, which I bought on your recommendation and have yet to read. Yoli. Oh Yoli. You're making it really hard for me to do this tag by taking all the good answers. I have Joan Silver's name on my "authors to explore" list. Linked stories!? Talty vibes!!?? I'm moving her up the list! This tag is full of wonderful recommendations.
I feel a Shields re-read coming up. Maybe her novel Unless this time. Did you ever read her short stories? I think you would enjoy them. You will read The animators when you are ready. No point in forcing it! Oh, I loved Night of the Living Rez so much. I think doing linked stories well is an art. I hope you enjoy Silber if you decide to pick her up. I think for sure you would like Improvement and Secrets of Happiness. There's plenty of great women left! And even if you pick a same answer, you're much better at doing things justice than I am!
Nice to see you Priscilla. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Alice Munro. I can only guess that maybe there is a grief of sorts when you learn that a favorite author is not who you thought they were and if I understood you correctly that it changed your understanding of her writing. But yes lets focus on other phenomenal women writers. I have many of the books you mentioned on my shelves waiting for me. I know that at any moment I have "phenomenal authors works at a hands reach" I had not heard of Joan Silber so I googled her and The Guardian article from 2019 called her America's Alice Munro. I am sure she would not want that association now!!! I like the cover of her book. Be well Evening Reader.
Hi Marcia! It's lovely to see you! That's an interesting comparison, Silber to Munro. I know she admires Munro's writing, but her work is much different in tone than Munro's. More generous, more expansive overall, I think.
I’m glad to see you back with this tag. Munro is a favorite of mine since way back, but I may not read her again. My first story, long ago from a college textbook, was “The Office” and I might try to reread it to see if it feels different now. I loved how the stories hung together in _Rez_ and want to see Talty’s new novel but I’m a train wreck with my reading right now.
David, I picked up my first Munro in '97--Hateship, Friendship... That was the beginning of something serious, and that book in particular I've read at least a dozen times. It's a shame. I'm sorry to hear your reading isn't going well. That always makes life feel strange. I've got to get my hands on Talty's new book. He's an auto-buy now.
Joan Silber wasn’t even on my radar until now. Maybe your mention of her will help to spread the word to others like me. Thanks for the video, from one Childless Cat Lady to another. And proud of it!😸
We Childless Cat Ladies are a force! If you decide to read Silber, please let me know what you pick. Maybe I'll do a dedicated video. Her last book came out in 2021, and she's almost 80, so I definitely hope we'll get at least a couple more.
It's so easy to get out of the video routine, and once you do it's so hard to get back in. I can't believe your @s all got deleted!! PS love the childless cat lady content (I'm one too :)
Gina, it's nuts! They all came back one time only, and then the next day they were gone again. UA-cam support is no help. Ha has, we childless cat ladies have to stick together!
I can recommend Shields’ book Small Ceremonies. I read it about 40 years ago now and it was very good. One of her early books. Also enjoyed her biography of Jane Austen which I read last year for Jane Austen July. I will have to check out Joan Silber. Thanks for mentioning her. It would be great to hear what you’ve been reading when you have time or the inclination to share it!
I've read Small Ceremonies! I believe it was her first novel? I need to revisit it. I haven't the read the biography of Jane Austen but plan to because I'm so curious about how she would write an actual biography. I hope if you read Silber you will let me know about it! I'm hoping to do a video about what I've been reading lately later this week.
Really thoughtful responses. I know I have tagged you a couple times. One was in the Bring Browsing Back tag, as you mentioned. I know I also tagged you in my Q and A videos. Your question is answered in my Part 4 video, and I know I tagged you there. 😊
Thanks for the tag, Priscilla ☺️
I’m taking this video as the encouragement I’ve been needing to actually finally read some Miriam Toews!

@readandre-read on The Animators. Me too. I bought after hearing about it on this channel and there it sits. *shakes head*

@@EveningReader I’ve just downloaded an ebook copy of “Improvement” from my library. Thanks for bringing Joan Silber to my attention.
