For those of you planning a road trip to Norway and Sweden, here's what the trip cost us. We cover all the costs of taking a campervan or motorhome to Scandinavia, from fuel, to food, to ferries, tolls, groceries etc and discuss if we found Scandinavia expensive.
We were shocked by what it cost us and go into some detail as to what's expensive, what's not, as well as tips to save money.
Is Norway expensive? Is Sweden expensive? Hopefully this video will help you decide if Van Life in Scandinavia is affordable or not.

Swede here: Sweden has always been cheap for camping as we have the Right to Roam (Allemansrätten).
I grew up going on trips with my family all over Europe. We went to Spain many times. It's lovely to see Brits visiting. Swedes travel a lot to the UK. I find that British people usually have no clue about us. Sweden is beautiful...what a shocker! (Reactions from my British friends who have visited)
In Sweden you get lots of Germans visiting and camping, because they know our country. Recently we get lots of Belgians and Dutch people.

I'm budgetting £10k each for 3 weeks cruising Antarctica but that really is the trip of a lifetime and I've been saving for 10 years.
Yeah that under £55 a day for everything !! Food, accomodation, fuel and adventures - bloody brilliant
Live in Norway. 2 weeks family holiday in like Spain etc for us(bought and payed in Norway) would easily cost 7-9k£. 4.5k£ for 3 months we would consider "dirt cheap"

Glad you could debunk some myths about Norway and its prices. Some things are really expensive, but you lived like a Norwegian family , shopped for groceries and cooked the food yourselves. Even us Norwegians don't eat & drink out a lot, because that's where your money will fly. Also because we're only 5 million, we love to watch what people think about us and our country and are so elated when people even mention it. Been following your journey all the way and it was awesome - so glad you liked it here (yea okay and in Sweden too... Norway and Sweden have constant banter between them) and hope you'll be back ❤❤

Wow! 😯 can you imagine The Roaming Radfords bill after their summer break.
They went through their summer itinerary and costs in a video and I think they estimated it would cost about £6000 for the whole summer trip for all five of them.
Each to their own as to when it comes to costs, different people like to spend their money on different things but I appreciate the transparency of UA-camrs with costs so that viewers can understand what a similar trip could cost.

Thank you for going over the costs. The true costs. A few years ago you would always hear from van lifers or full-time RVers and they would say things like "How could you not afford this life." It can be just as expensive, sometimes even more expensive, than living stationary. It's still a great way to live. Just have to be honest.
That's brilliant. I guess when you deduct what it would have cost you to stay home for 3 months the actual cost of the trip would be considerably less. In any case - you did great. I figure it would be cheaper to be on the road this winter than stuck at home in a hyper-inflated fuel crisis.
In comparison to the UK, Scandinavia is not all that expensive. But the prices in the UK are horrendous. When we went the exchange rate was about AUS $2.40 for one pound, and a single pound almost bought nothing ! The "tube" prices were horrendous, especially the cash rate.
That was very interesting, I also was under the impression it was considerably more expensive over there. Yeah it’s a lot of money but for a 3 month trip like that I think it was very reasonable. And you don’t have to justify spending it at all, yeah there’s a cost of living crisis that’s affecting us all but you both work so hard to be able to do this.

Thanks for another great video. We've been in Norway for 5 weeks now and spent just €50 on food (First Price items rock), stocked up in Germany beforehand. Also found that marinas tend to have super cheap laundry and showers (€1/€2.50) which has been so handy. Agree with the diesel prices, they flucuate so much, the cheapest we found was €1.99 which is great for Norway. I travelled here during summer of 2020 and it was so cheap, but that will never happen again, still Norway is very affordable if planned right - I agree 👍

And if they don't have first-price items at your closest grocery stores, there is also PRIMA(Rema 1000) and XTRA(EXTRA)
The main reason they are cheaper is that there is little or no ad budget for these items, making them much cheaper to produce compared to the rest. They come from the same factory as the more expensive brands.

That's a bargain for such a lengthy trip! I spent $6,000 (5650 pounds) on a three week trip to London in 2015. Ladies, I commend you on planning ahead and saving. I saved for a year and a half to pay cash for my vacation. It was my first time "across the pond" from California to London and GB. I saw Wales, Scotland, and England. Well done!
For direct comparison on the dog food, the unit price in Norway is 1.21 (6.05/5)and in the UK 1.25 (7.50/6) so yes cheaper in Norway but I would call it a push 😊
Put that all into perspective... For two people, many would spent £1k per WEEK on holidays (often PLUS FLIGHTS), loving living vicariously through your vids. Luv ya work....

Thanks Ladies really enjoyed .We found the same on our 2 week trip around Denmark slightly more expensive than the UK but not as bad as people had told us. We don’t count shopping in our budget because whether we are away or at home you still have to eat. Looking forward to watching your next adventure.

Plus the savings on the gas and electric. Also the amount of fuel that you normally use when driving in the UK should off set some of the fuel used on your adventures. Either way I was surprised how cheap it was we paid £4k for a week in Mauritius. You paid about £45 a day for food, transport and accommodation. Can't beat that.
I think that it's really good value for a three month holiday . you take your accommodation with you and of course your beloved pets .

I expected the Scandinavian cost not to be much more than UK. As Lou & Em confirmed, they planned for this trip for years (trip account savings) and if you are conscious savy, your can stretch the NOK & SEK really far. You may spend much more, on one thing and less on another.
My son said Sundays & Mondays are best Petro fill up days he found while traveling through Norway. There are Apps that can target best stops,, in advance along your route as well.

I'm extremely surprised at the costs!! I've always heard that Norway and Japan are the 2 most expensive countries to travel to and that fact alone has always put me off. I followed your trip around Scandinavia with keen interest as it's always been a dream of mine to go there (my great grandparents were originally from Denmark), but travelling from Cape Town, South Africa is a bit more of a mission than travelling via the UK, so thanks for taking us all along and allowing us to enjoy it with you!! xx
I'm norwegian, I recommend that, if you ever decide to visit norway. Resturants are very expensive. Take out can be expensive, but ask around and people will tell you where you can find affordable take out.
There are different grocery stores that are much more expensive then others here, so when you go out shopping, ask locals about best priced stores around. Norwegians we like to give advice and help out if we can. So don't be scared of asking around. And go to places that are not these typical tourist places, prices will follow that, the more touristy it is, the more expensive it will be. I've traveled a bit around and there's tiny gems hidden almost everywhere, so don't be afraid of driving around and explore, norway is a very safe place do this.
And maybe search around on internet, get to know a few norwegians that you can visit, while you are here.

Same as 🇳🇴 goes for costa here in 🇩🇰, in fact I just read that our cost of living has surpassed that of 🇳🇴😀 But if you pick your stores for shopping watch out for fuel prices etc. you can bring your costs down a fair bit here too😀

£4.5k road trip holiday for 3 months ain’t bad at all. Considering the high cost of fuel in Europe aswell. That was a great post girls, as you gave out so much information and detailed costs. Can’t wait till your next adventure.

Vehicle fuel here in South Carolina, USA where I live, the fuel prices fluctuate daily as well. You trip was way cheaper then I expected 👏
We are huge fans and have enjoyed watching your trip. No need to justify the costs and given how much you crammed in it's not that expensive really. It's less than we thought it would be and it shows how expensive it is in the UK these days.
Planning Copenhagen,Stockholm and Oslo for next summer in July, three or four weeks, stops in-between, might get across to Bergen as well.
First motorhome arrives in two weeks, 2019 Bessacarr 542, so three weeks if France in October after a short shakedown in the Peak district.

Really appreciated the detailed breakdown of your trip as I am planning to follow your itinerary summer 2024. I found it much cheaper than I expected - the huge savings on campsites which are compulsory in so many countries sure help the cause😊
Thanks 4 Sharing. By comparison our trip was shorter and on a similar route but turnaround at Tromso. Agreed fuel was our biggest outlay at £1500 tolls and ferries with Autopass £777. We only stayed in sites 3 nights. Trolltunga was our most expensive day. We had a fabulous trip and feel overjoyed at completing an epic 8 week roadtrip. Thanx ladies very informative. Now to regroup on our Schengen Quota

I couldn't do the trip in person for many reasons, but that's not the point. You enabled us all to come with you and experience these beautiful countries. For what you did and got to see and you didn’t go without, I think it’s great value.
Very useful and interesting. Planning the reverse trip next year (over the bridge/tunnel & back by Ferry from Norway). We have holidayed in Norway 10+ times so know the score with costs. Both countries look well set up for camper vans. We just have to work out power for charging devices if we are off grid for a few days.
Stuck in the housegoing a bit stir crazy after getting that stupid Covid, the good thing is that as we are planning a 3 month trip to Norway next year, I have been able to binge watch your brilliant Norway trip it looks like you had a fantastic time. After watching your journey we may have to rethink our trip as our plan was to get to the Northern tip but after watching your trip we might not get there without missing too much stuff, although we do not have any pets with us and we will not be working on route so that will probably save us a lot of time. I was surprised at the cost as if you think about it, the cost of staying at home is not much less, you still have buy food, fuel and probably some snacks. Right time to catch up with your Irish adventure. Not wanting to blow smoke somewhere I find your vlogs the most fun and entertaining van vlogs that I watch, keep them coming.
We think it's very reasonable, well done. If you can't have a treat, go out for a meal or do some things in the country you're in while visiting it could make it a bit sad but I'd still go. The vlogs we're amazing and you both did it justice.🥰

A cost of a luxury cruise round the med would cost that.

Great vid, well thought out, thanks for this, we saved and budgeted 4500 for 3 months van Scandi this year, ended up France 2 months at 1200 per month, stayed more campsites and Aires but generally living same way you do, UK comparable to France only if you don't move about much 😉

You forgot to deduct the cost of the utility bills in the UK from the total!! I think it a perfect price for the trip. At home you spent money too, take that of your total amount and it becomes nice and affordable.

Glad to see you doing the comparison and it not being to bad. Thought that in 1995 when I went to a Land rover national. Back then there was a ferry from Newcastle to Bergen. Be nice if it was to return. Was 24 hours on a boat each way but worth it and you could see the oil rigs in the distance.
There's over 300 comments here, so I haven't read them all, but I assume you're aware that you get a bit of money back, if you return cans and bottles in the shops in Norway? It's called "pant". This is on soda cans/bottles, beer cans/bottles and some ofter bottles. The pant is written on the side of each can/bottle. You get about 2-3 NOK back pr can/bottle. Not a lot, but it adds up. :)

3:30 It's quite uncommon for public landrymats cause in Sweden, you normally have your own if you own a house and
apartment complexes have laundry rooms where tenants can wash their clothes (those are normally high quality due to
how often they are used). There's very little reason to ever visit a laundrymat, hence why they don't really exist in Sweden.
Edit: almost forgot, you might get the infamous "angry note" if you forget to take out the lint in the tumble dryer, for some
reason it's like a cardinal sin here in Sweden.
Edit2: 9:50 if you get a bit lucky, you can find really good deals at supermarkets. Regarding the 10 coke box, ive seen deals
on them in supermarkets for as little as 30SEK excl deposits or 2,38 pounds. Supermarkets tend to be cheapest, second
are well known grocery stores and last are those small local grocery stores in smaller towns and villages. Thinking of one
in a place my brother used to live in, it was the only grocery store in that town and the prices where quite expensive.
As a final last option, you have gas stations, they are however the most expensive choice and should only be used in
emergencies. They can easily be 1½ to twice as expensive as supermarkets, they sort of have to be cause they can't
really buy in nearly as much stock as supermarkets can.
I think for a trip like that and all the stunning scenery and things you have done that is a great price for 2 people, my sister paid 5 grand for a cruise all she saw was mountains and sea from a distance. But she did get karaoke every night.
That's not too bad a price, without the cost of getting there I was expecting it was gonna be around £1300-£1500 a month especially because of the fuel. Well done Ladies!

In Norway i lived off hot dogs from garages with the odd sandwich thrown in. Went in september once and must have ate my own weight in plums ( plommen ) . Loads on sale at the side of the road on the west coast around Bergen , Stavanger and Kristiansand .

My wife and I were in Helsinki a few years back and we had heard the stories about the high costs. We stayed just out of the town centre, maybe 2 miles, and the costs there were actually comparable to where we live in the North East of England for food and drink. The city centre was mega expensive but then again so is London for e.g and you are ony there for a few days after all. I think a lot of people stay round the tourist areas, which is understandable as that's what we go to see, but if you want to save a few quid in most cities you don't need to travel too far out to see a huge difference and we find those places are a more authentic experience as it tends to be locals not tourists.
I notice you did not mention alcohol costs, maybe because you don't drink? but that is a standard cost comparator for a lot of people. We paid £9 for a beer in Helsinki next to the marina, but we also got one for £3 in a happy hour near our apartment and it was about £4 there at normal cost. That was back in 2018.
Yeah cities are always more expensive right, no we are not massive drinkers well lou doesn’t drink and I rarely do. I did notice that a pint of beer in Bergen was around 8-9 quid and again in London you can pay not too far from that but yeah I have heard the alcohol is where the cost is a lot different, I did buy a few beers but I didn’t notice too much of a price difference but I expect if you brought it all the time then you would 🤔

I never include regular food in my calcs, as I'd have to eat if I was at home. I do include meals out and treats but not food cooked in the van. Great vlog again, super informative and quite an eye opener (in a good way). Sorry Emily I reckon at least 40% of that food bill was snacks... 😉 😄 🤣
Thats great to here that a 3 month tour of Norway and Sweden works out cheaper than here in the UK.
Great analysis and we all love a good spreadsheet. It's good to know these things. Out of interest, supermarket fuel in France from E'lecrec is set nationally. Auchan's price is set by department (region). Super U, Carrefour and Intermarche set their prices against other fuel stations with close proximity. The exception to this is the Paris Metropolitan area, where they are a rule unto themselves...
Wow, you spent less than what I thought. Maybe because here in the U.S., prices on everything is skyrocketing. From gas to food. Even breathing is expensive. But it was worth it looking at those breath taking views and enjoying it with the person (and pets) that you love.

I'm just suprised its similar to the UK. one thing: if you can drive electric - rapid chargers are like 34p/kWh in Norway because they have so much green cheap hyroelectric energy, so probbaly cheaper overall to travel norway electric than UK by 4-5x times!
Spot on summary, was very similar your chocolate was my alcohol, although Norway did do my liver good, happy travels.
Nordic countries use a pant system for soda cans and other types of PET bottles and aluminium cans... So in Norway for a 10p of coke cans that would amount to a return of £1.74 - didn't hear you mention it, so thought you might have missed it. Think it was 2 NOK < 0.5l and 3 NOK > 0.5l. Although sugary treats are more or less always vegetarian, it's not much sustenance. Geez Louise! I'm gobsmacked. It's MUCH more expensive here in the states than either Scandinavia or the UK! I paused the video to look at Emily's spreadsheet of specifics....we're paying a lot more for groceries, fuel and....snacks (I get the importance of branding the Snack Bandit). I really am shocked that you could spend three months traveling for the amount you spent. I wish I could print off Emily's comparison spreadsheet to show it to my partner...well, I'd show it to everyone I know. Why are people saying it's horrendously expensive? I saw the price of that tin of corn...I feel like sticking a fork in my eye and jumping off a bridge. Well done you two lovelies. I love traveling with you. xo Suzi

Also, somehting that should be accounted for is, you pay a fair bit for pop and so on.. But take them back to most supermarkets and you'll get 20-30 quid in your hand each time.. Thats not a thing in most places i think. Not in England or America thats for sure. So that makes it cheaper when buying pop. The 1,5 liters are what about 30p or somethting? Used to be 40p but that changed 10-12 years ago.. 🤔

I was close but over. I was guessing $5,000. 00. I am surprised that it costs so much to get there. Over 700. That’s a lot. If you had a great time it is worth every cent. Watch out for cheap dog food - causes kidney problems among other things. Raw diet best and actually not more expensive, especially as vet bills are minimised. Speaking from experience!
