I was at at Arthur Joly´s Studio once. I was living in Sao Paulo and joined an introductory analog synth workshop he was holding at a cultural venue. I was so intrigued that i asked him if he could give me a personal lesson. So we agreed that i come to his studio. He showed me the basics and left me alone afterwards for me to patch around for a few minutes. But i was overwhelmed by all the new concepts and was just able to open and close the filter and change the pitch of the notes in the sequencer. i was afraid to unpatch anything...lol It was a huge big format synth that reached all the way to the ceiling. i felt i was left in charge of a nuclear reactor or something...
Go check Arthur Joly's latest album 'At New Doors', recorded at News Doors Keys Vintage studio in Belo Horizonte, state of Minas Gerais. I got the vinyl record.
Fun fact: Mutuca is a common type of fly in Countryside Brazil. It's a fly but behaves kinda like a mosquito, it feeds on blood and it stings pretty hard. Just like this synth.
Beautiful little synth! Being limited can lead to new creativity in the effort to explore every corner. That said, I hope he creates a brother to this one with noise and dedicated LFO.
Had the opportunity to grab 1 of 7 Eurorack LFO Prototype Arthur created, his stuff is so unique, crazy and cool. Great video, the mutuca sounds amazing.

Oh hells yes! It looks like the control panel of a spaceship from a 60’s B grade Sci-fi and makes sounds to match. The movie in the MST3K episode “Devil Fish” sounds like it was made with this.
@@kaitlyn__L and the nice wood too. I would buy this if it had a few more features like an LFO and hard sync. That sort of thing. The price seems fair.
What a little cutie. The sound occasionally reminded me of my Stylophone 350S when it’s batteries are on their way out : ) that’s not a negative comment, I get a lovely sound from my Christmas present as an 11 year old (quite a few years ago). Being more familiar with wood rather than electronics, from what I can see, the casing is a wooden veneer, therefore friendly for rainforest conservation. P E A C E : )
In Brazil, synthesizers are kinda rare to spot in the wild. Electronics are stupidly expensive there, with most stuff costing almost double the price in Europe and North America thanks to importing taxes. It's no wonder that synthesizers are reserved to the "well-off" or have a very niche market, are hard to market, and even harder to sell. Even if you build your own, I bet most parts would still be more expensive than they should. I'm almost 40, and the first time I ever touched a synthesizer was after moving to Europe a few years ago. I guess that's why most of Brazilian music involves acoustic instruments (lol), so it was very surprising to discover that there is, in fact, someone making boutique synthesizers in Brazil. That's pretty cool.
@@erfwtf Never knew about them. Just checked it out, their cheapest synth is 390 USD. That's way too expensive for the average Brazilian. Just for comparison, cheap guitar brands like Squire and Epiphone are already considered expensive for the usual guitar player. It's telling that the EMW site is in English, with no option for Brazilian Portuguese, and all the pricing is in USD and not BRL.
All my Brazilian pals have to import electronics thru family or friends of friends of friends when they go on holiday. “Bring me back an x and a y please, I’ll pay you back!” Though they’ll readily admit it’s pretty middle-class to be able to do even that.
He had one on his original drum machines then made a batch without. I wrote an email and said the aesthetic effect was so much cooler with them on the machines that he had to bring them back, and he did. Unfortunately I still haven’t been able to get a Recodrum because my timing of funds never meshes with production runs, but one day the stars will align, hopefully.
Very nice synth that would be great with all the stuff you said was missing. I do hope that he looks into expanding the synth into a bigger project and potentially into modular synth units as it's got a nice tone.
Hainbach! I would love it if you would do a video on the less sexy but very important side of making electronic music: cable and power supply organization! I want to see how you plug your stuff in! Where do you put the wall warts??? How do you rout things without being buried in a tangle of cables??? Love this video as always, and I hope Arthur makes more sweet synths!
Amazing synth! I have to look up into the brazilian modular synth scene, being brazilian and completely unaware of it lol Fun fact, "mutuca" is the name of a brazilian fly species :)
Oh my! Some sounds are pretty familiar to those that my friend's pest repelling gadget makes! Too strange and too out of this world and even unpleasant sometimes. But still a great one! Thanks for sharing it's existence with us )))
That's such an interesting find Hainbach! I love all these Synthesizers and old equipment you cover in your videos. I'm learning such a great deal about the history of all these great machines and the sounds and influences they've had on music and more. Looking forward to the next find you bring to our attention!!
reminds me of the same synths we made in the early 1980s, vco, vca lfo linking waveforms, buttons and knobs, crazy mess of wires inside a very similar retro wooden box, but with pencil text.. and no fancy name - just "noise box", people hated our noisy noise boxes, so we made them louder with home made horn speakers made at metalwork class in school
I will admit, I am an absolute noob with regards to synth stuff, but I have to say I absolutely agree that lil thing is an absolute beaut and has pushed me over the edge to give this type and style of music a blast.
Fantastic sound and design! I urge you to check out Ian Helliwell’s electronic inventions as they are so Hainbach. He’s what you would call an outsider artist and when I mentioned that his gear and workshop looked like Hainbach’s he’d never heard of you!
so the initial bassline you played immediately reminded me of a - half speed? - take on 2 unlimited 'no limit'... so is this funky little machine the key to bring eurotechno back big time?
Thank you Hainbach for a nice vid. Hard not to fall in love with the Mutuca. But what was that thing to the left of it on your desk, that had an almost similar look, though less colourful?
That demo at 6:04 sounds very Thom Yorke-ish. I could totally see him singing to that (though I could see him singing into a bucket and that would sound great too).

What a gorgeous looking and rich sounding synth the Mutuca FM is!
This seems to come straight from some sci-fi 60 movie, lovely!
I don’t think it looks like a toy at all. It is beautiful and has a high quality look about it.
Yeah, the bright colours might fool someone at a distance, but the heft and all the metal switches (plus the VU meter!) tell you quickly it’s serious.
I think the primary colour choices give it an 80's Synth Kit look....
The VU meter is beautiful !

You are right, and not only electronic components are absurdly high cost (worse after the pandemic), many of them simply do not exist in our market.
It's really sad! Brazillians are so much artistic. This twices the meaning.
