The Prettiest Analog Synth (That Also Sounds Fantastic)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 жов 2024
- If you like the synth sounds of Boards of Canada, Plaid and other early Warp acts, and you appreciate beautiful design, the Mutuca FM by Arthur Joly is for you. Arthur send me it a while with no strings attached, and when I finally found time to play with it, I was amazed by its sounds and decided to record a video on it. The Mutuca has a warm and rich tone, almost like it was already processed on tape. Not a synth for every situation, but basses and leads it does charmingly well.

I was at at Arthur Joly´s Studio once. I was living in Sao Paulo and joined an introductory analog synth workshop he was holding at a cultural venue. I was so intrigued that i asked him if he could give me a personal lesson. So we agreed that i come to his studio. He showed me the basics and left me alone afterwards for me to patch around for a few minutes. But i was overwhelmed by all the new concepts and was just able to open and close the filter and change the pitch of the notes in the sequencer. i was afraid to unpatch anything...lol It was a huge big format synth that reached all the way to the ceiling. i felt i was left in charge of a nuclear reactor or something...
And of course Fora Bolsonaro! Sending my best wishes to all Brazilians
Cool story. Thanks for sharing.
He is finally gone
the thief is back to stole even more thanks to bring political discussion to an music video really needed
@@wessudo9195 fora Bolsonaro indeed!
Fun fact: Mutuca is a common type of fly in Countryside Brazil. It's a fly but behaves kinda like a mosquito, it feeds on blood and it stings pretty hard. Just like this synth.
Is it like a gadfly then?
@@art-fw7ci yep!
If there's one thing I trust Brazil with, it's the bass
As a brazillian bassist (and drum and bass producer) i appreciate your trust
Go check Arthur Joly's latest album 'At New Doors', recorded at News Doors Keys Vintage studio in Belo Horizonte, state of Minas Gerais. I got the vinyl record.
So nice to see Joly's work on your channel!
Beautiful little synth! Being limited can lead to new creativity in the effort to explore every corner. That said, I hope he creates a brother to this one with noise and dedicated LFO.
well said.
Deep!
So glad to see one of Arthur's creations around here, he's my hero!
This seems to come straight from some sci-fi 60 movie, lovely!
This is absolutely awesome! Thanks for demonstrating
I don’t think it looks like a toy at all. It is beautiful and has a high quality look about it.
Yeah, the bright colours might fool someone at a distance, but the heft and all the metal switches (plus the VU meter!) tell you quickly it’s serious.
I think the primary colour choices give it an 80's Synth Kit look....
The VU meter is beautiful !
@@kaitlyn__L and the nice wood too. I would buy this if it had a few more features like an LFO and hard sync. That sort of thing. The price seems fair.
What a gorgeous looking and rich sounding synth the Mutuca FM is!
That man is a talented synthesizer designer. It looks amazing and most importantly it sounds really nice too.
I love the melody and sound from 2:24 so much!
That 'heartbeat' track (don't know what else to call it) was magnificent.
I liked that too
That sounds AMAZING with reverb. OMG. So lush.
Would love to see an album of just the Mutuca sessions! It sounds so beautiful.
Had the opportunity to grab 1 of 7 Eurorack LFO Prototype Arthur created, his stuff is so unique, crazy and cool. Great video, the mutuca sounds amazing.
really happy to see arthur joly and recosynth in your channel, much luv from brazil 🧡🤞🏾
Oh hells yes! It looks like the control panel of a spaceship from a 60’s B grade Sci-fi and makes sounds to match. The movie in the MST3K episode “Devil Fish” sounds like it was made with this.
Awaken the beer drinker within!
I'm a Brazilian musician, synthesist, keyboardist... And I've never ever heard about this beauty. 😳
The quality of the synthesizer is legit magnificent, & dope.
Sounds great and looks like Thomas the Tank Engine turned into a synthesizer, which is an odd plus in my book! 😂
Great! I'm from Brazil and never heard of this equipment before. So cool!
Sounds nothing like I was expecting. How cool!
Talking about early Warp Records artists - i'm definitely hearing some Broadcast with 1:29
gnarly little box!
Very long way from a vintage Bucha, but sonically I think it's a big surprise. You can probably turn it into a new VST...
From Brazil, wow, top!
your channel is awesome man
Joly!! Great to see one of his recosynths here.
That's such an interesting find Hainbach! I love all these Synthesizers and old equipment you cover in your videos. I'm learning such a great deal about the history of all these great machines and the sounds and influences they've had on music and more. Looking forward to the next find you bring to our attention!!
sounds lovely
Man I could play with that for hours....
So Sophisticated
i fucking love Arthur Joly and Hainbach
It gives me the impression of a limited, but thick, ARP or almost Moog-like tone.
Beautiful
This would make such an amazing pairing with Neon Egg's Planetarium 2, same MS10 style shape. It'd be like its little pal :)
To be fair I think he did! ua-cam.com/video/naflGK96a9w/v-deo.html
I believe there is a P2 sitting just behind the Mutuca to the left.
I like the format of this synth.. reminds me of the ekdal moisturizer
Hello to you, from USA. Synthes around the world unite!

Lulaaaa
What a lovely little synth ❤️
What a little cutie. The sound occasionally reminded me of my Stylophone 350S when it’s batteries are on their way out : ) that’s not a negative comment, I get a lovely sound from my Christmas present as an 11 year old (quite a few years ago). Being more familiar with wood rather than electronics, from what I can see, the casing is a wooden veneer, therefore friendly for rainforest conservation.
P E A C E : )
Oh my! Some sounds are pretty familiar to those that my friend's pest repelling gadget makes! Too strange and too out of this world and even unpleasant sometimes.
But still a great one!
Thanks for sharing it's existence with us )))
Very unique synthesizer !!!
Gratuitous VU meters are always delightful.
He had one on his original drum machines then made a batch without. I wrote an email and said the aesthetic effect was so much cooler with them on the machines that he had to bring them back, and he did. Unfortunately I still haven’t been able to get a Recodrum because my timing of funds never meshes with production runs, but one day the stars will align, hopefully.
I hope he never stops making them, and that it gets easier. What a piece of art.
It's kinda like 1/3rd of a EMS or Syntrx, neat idea. Arthur I wish you luck dude!
Lovely synth and lovely day in Brazil today with their election outcome!
I managed to pick one of these up for $500 and ADORE it. Such a fun inspiring little machine.
so nice
Keep at it Arthur!
The gauge is cute 😍
Omfg Arthur Jolyyyyy! I love love love his stuff so much. That's a dream piece for me, so excited to hear your thoughts on it!
Interesting to talk about technological modifications and as a graphic and photographer, I would like to understand the mystery of how life formed informally.
That demo at 6:04 sounds very Thom Yorke-ish. I could totally see him singing to that (though I could see him singing into a bucket and that would sound great too).
Hainbach! I would love it if you would do a video on the less sexy but very important side of making electronic music: cable and power supply organization! I want to see how you plug your stuff in! Where do you put the wall warts??? How do you rout things without being buried in a tangle of cables???
Love this video as always, and I hope Arthur makes more sweet synths!
I so need that. I'm just getting started with using real hardware synths and it's very challenging to get right ergonomically and technically.
In Brazil, the Mutuca (horsefly) is a type of vampire fly
whooooa..sounds great!
O BGLH É QUE NOIS SABE COMO USAR O GRAVE! só vc ver um DJ de funk em qualquer favela do Brasil
In Brazil, synthesizers are kinda rare to spot in the wild. Electronics are stupidly expensive there, with most stuff costing almost double the price in Europe and North America thanks to importing taxes. It's no wonder that synthesizers are reserved to the "well-off" or have a very niche market, are hard to market, and even harder to sell. Even if you build your own, I bet most parts would still be more expensive than they should.
I'm almost 40, and the first time I ever touched a synthesizer was after moving to Europe a few years ago. I guess that's why most of Brazilian music involves acoustic instruments (lol), so it was very surprising to discover that there is, in fact, someone making boutique synthesizers in Brazil. That's pretty cool.
Checkout Electronic Music Works (EMW) synthesizers made in Brazil.
@@erfwtf Never knew about them. Just checked it out, their cheapest synth is 390 USD. That's way too expensive for the average Brazilian. Just for comparison, cheap guitar brands like Squire and Epiphone are already considered expensive for the usual guitar player.
It's telling that the EMW site is in English, with no option for Brazilian Portuguese, and all the pricing is in USD and not BRL.
You are right, and not only electronic components are absurdly high cost (worse after the pandemic), many of them simply do not exist in our market.
It's really sad! Brazillians are so much artistic. This twices the meaning.
All my Brazilian pals have to import electronics thru family or friends of friends of friends when they go on holiday. “Bring me back an x and a y please, I’ll pay you back!” Though they’ll readily admit it’s pretty middle-class to be able to do even that.
LOVE … but I would love it even more if it’s keys were old arcade buttons 🥰
Could you imagine what a fun build this would be? Kit please?
WOAH IT MAKES A SAW? SOUNDS JUST LIKE BOARDS OF CANADA BRAH.
naaah that is never to expensive for a good analog synth!
While I appreciate all of the synths today that can do everything, there's something to be said for a synth that has its own niche and produces a sound that nothing else does.
Very nice synth that would be great with all the stuff you said was missing. I do hope that he looks into expanding the synth into a bigger project and potentially into modular synth units as it's got a nice tone.
Amazing synth! I have to look up into the brazilian modular synth scene, being brazilian and completely unaware of it lol
Fun fact, "mutuca" is the name of a brazilian fly species :)
Dei muita risada quando vi o nome. Eu chamo qualquer inseto desconhecido de mutuca hahahahaha =P
grande Artur Joly! sou fã, e tem um design único!
I wouldn't mind having one. 👍
It sorta looks like the Dewanatron synths, but with a Buchla touch pad interface. Cool stuff!
O Joly é foda demais!
Beautiful Brazilian technical marvel. Love it. Arthur is truly a wondrous fella.
Thank you Hainbach for a nice vid. Hard not to fall in love with the Mutuca. But what was that thing to the left of it on your desk, that had an almost similar look, though less colourful?
Looks like Klop found a new hobby 😂
could look really nice with white face and black knobs
Love Boards of Canada! Go National Film Board!
It sounds like you're playing a nuclear reactor
Filter sounds very wet and low! Listen to those bubbles in audio.
Nice 👍🏅
Maker Arthur Joly is a helluva guy! He has built lots AND lots of amazing stuff.
Top sweater game as always dude. You should sell some!
so the initial bassline you played immediately reminded me of a - half speed? - take on 2 unlimited 'no limit'... so is this funky little machine the key to bring eurotechno back big time?
Och ist der süß!!
this would be great combined with the Neon Egg, they look very similar
2:23
@@Hainbach awesome, the egg is on my buy list as they are still being produced. Have you done a video on it dude?
Dope
Hello Hainbach.
There is something quite controversial that I would like to mention here.
The point I present has to do with defending the work of those who do it with honesty, dedication, beauty and quality. Just like you do.
One of the things that you most inspire and stimulate in people is the need to have their own creative identity.
What I mean here has nothing to do with persecuting someone out of spite, pleasure, competition, their own nature or their own choices.
I understand the reasons why you need to say something about a gift you got and actually liked. For me it is an elegant attitude and one that should be followed as an example.
But there are some sensitive points that should be taken into account here.
This project presented by you is basically a mixture of basic circuits that you can find available on the web. There's nothing original or special, just copy and paste.
You can open this and check for yourself. This lo-fi mood is not something designed intentionally, it is the result of using cheap or out-of-spec electronics components with a very poor audio output module (section).
The sound is not pleasant, very shrill at times. It gets a lot better at minute 2:22 when you use the reverbs and sound processors from your system, but anything you put in there will sound good, would you agree?
Everything I've heard from Boards of Canada is smooth, full-bodied, and pleasing to the ear.
This deep bass is characteristic of the oscillator (VCO) based on the CEM3340 chip, the same one that's in the Roland SH-101 which is quite famous for its bass sounds combined with a Steiner Parker style Filter (VCF) or Diode Ladder Filter. I've built several of these using this combination and I can tell you that you get killer basses from it.
So if you want to reproduce this for yourself, just build an oscillator based on CEM3340 or AS3340 (chip costs around 5 bucks), a Steiner Parker Filter or diode Ladder Filter, any ADSR, LFO and VCA you like, use cheap components in the whole circuit, put a simple output section based on TL072 and that's it. You've got a lo-fi synth with deep bass sounds.
You can find all the information you need in "electro-music" forum pages or Sam Battle LMNC pages.
In these places, endless lists of other creators are published that provide all the information you will need. Including basic electronics lessons, how to solder, electronics components types and so.
As for the appearance of the device: Well, this looks like a Mattel Fisher Price toy, this hell blue with blood red refers to this inevitable comparison... However, it's all a matter of personal taste. I won't go into that.
Now comes the controversial question:
Selling for 600 bucks something that is not a self-made design (I hope the cabinet is) and built it with schematics downloaded from the web with cheap components, seems to me something quite dishonest or pure cleverness in my way of understanding...
Many others do the same thing, however they give credit to the original creators and still provide documents with schematics, PCB layouts or any other form of compensation. This is the least you can do to repay with gratitude to those who have received some benefit.
Okay, don't you care if the design was self-appropriated from others?
So for the same or equal value you can get a Behringer 2600 (ARP 2600 clone). And then you can explore an infinite range of sounds and possibilities, including extremely bass or lo-fi sounds... Want to spend less? Grab the Model D (Moog Clone) or any other model that is within your budget.
Do you honestly care and want something different and original that is completely out of the box? There are hundreds of other designers who design their own systems with exceptional quality and visual beauty (including copies of the classics but with superior quality) and sell them for honest prices in various places around the web, whether in large online stores or on their own websites. Many others make their own designs available for free on their pages. Including well-established companies like Erica Synths, Befaco and AI Synthesis.
Or you can still learn and build your own stuff, go ahead It is not so difficult. Do it and have a lot of fun, you might be surprised and who knows you might make some money instead of losing it.
Sorry for the rant and the long text. But it is important to give many elements to help people question, make good choices and express the best within them.
Thanks and keep doing a great job.
I have a friend (hardware engineer) who had some contact with the creator and he had almost the exact critique. it's actually hard to find anyone here (validly) criticizing him, in part due to lack of technical knowledge of the average buyer.
This synthesizer has a slightly cheap but interesting design. Most interesting sound.
are you using Mutuca with a sequencer? i.e. for the jam that plays at 0:01 to 0:12 ...
yes! SQ-1
It is a very nice synth. Would get one if it were $300.
Thanks much for introducing it to us.
Have a wonderful day.
People don't appreciate a good thing until its too late sometimes.
i personally think it looks quite ugly. it reminds me of cheap candy that doesn't taste like anything. I still like it a lot tho and I don't think its too expensive. it sounds very nice and still is pretty cute. Maybe its unique appearance is what saved it in the end too and I think that's an amazing story.
