An ebay seller got angry with me for wanting to see a county music magazine with Anita Cochran article in it. He told me that he doesn't want to show anything because of so called copyright laws. I've never had issues with other sellers. Another item was a pair of pants worth about 20.00 yet seller wants 250.00 USD plus the 80 bucks for shipping. I was told that I'm a racist. Electronic items 4000% markup, no wonder ebay has gone to the toilet. You can't buy anything there unless you have a minium of 60.00 USD on a 15.00 item. The shipping cost is ridiculous

I figure he isn't a dumbell for asking $1,000 for that record player. His wife probably wants him to sell it and he doesn't want to sell it, but to keep the peace in the family he posted it for sale, he just put a ridiculous price on it so he would get no offers. That way he gets to keep it.

I don't know why it's like this, it's really sad...You know when CRT TVs are on the side of the road everywhere you look, literally being put out to be trash, people sell those same CRT TVs on eBay for like 200-300$. Like wtf, why is everyone so god damn greedy, I get times are tough, but for fuck sake. People suck man.

You are absolutely right.. So frustrating. I needed a part for a vintage Maytag twin tub washer, and found it for $30..until the seller found out I am a collector and restorer, then he changed his tune and said $100.

+Pollmonster It's funny. I thought the same thing about Mr. Anderson and radiotvphononut's rants sound like the exact things Mr. Anderson would rant about. However, radiotvphononut is right on the money with his rants. I've watched many of his videos for months now and look forward to every new one, and keep finding old ones I haven't seen before. I'm totally hooked on them and I feel that I've learned a lot from them. They're educational and entertaining and it's hard to find that combination in things nowadays.

I SO TOTALLY agree with you about this stupid trend on E-Bay. I used to get used and busted tape recorders for reasonable prices (like $10 - $35) but those prices are long gone!
I agree about the TV shows causing people to have insane expectations, but there is also a lot of excessive auction bidding by "flippers" who buy the stuff and then put it up themselves for twice what they paid. I've also seen a new trend. E-Bay listings appear on specialized sites pretending to be bargian sites. You can bid on an item through that site without being an E-Bay buyer. So this causes a lot of fake bid wars. It makes auctions a total joke and not what they were intended to be.
And then there are the stupid sellers. No end to "DUMB" here! My favorite line from E-Bay ads is: "It looks like it should work" Yeah sure! OR "It takes 4 D batteries which I don't have to test the unit. $90.00." If the fool wants $90 for the thing, he could at least buy the batteries and test it! The scary ones are "I got into the unit and saw that it needs a new belt, an easy fix". I can just imagine what the person broke, "getting into the unit".
    Arrrg! Now I'm steaming.
Oh well, I just don't bother with E-Bay anymore. Let the fools have their way.

    • @clydesight
      @clydesight 10 років тому

***** Have you seen my UA-cam channel? It's all about vintage tape recorders which I get from E-Bay. So I know whereof I speak and I do not exaggerate. Of course *I* don't expect a 20+ year old unit to work correctly, but there are others on E-Bay who DO. How do I know? Because they pay what are sometimes ridiculous prices for broken stuff and then contact ME asking how to fix it!
Some people think "It looks like it should work" means that it will work once they get a hold of it. No seller should ever use the words "It looks like it should work" because it confuses the equally ignorant buyer. The seller should say "UNTESTED, buy at your own risk". or "Powers on but nothing else" THAT is honest, and some sellers DO say this. It is the shady ones who say "Looks like it should work" or "Mint condition" when clearly it is not, but the photos are misleading. I got a tape recorder in "mint condition" that had a chunk taken out of the back corner of the plastic case. The seller had listed it as "Mint condition" and made sure to photograph it from angles that didn't show the missing chunk. So I do not exaggerate about some E-Bay sellers!
Not all E-Bay sellers ARE honest (the same goes for buyers). Many find these things in garage sales, and the owner knows nothing about them, so they get them for a small price. They don't even clean them up, they just put them on E-Bay, untested and ignorant of how they work or IF they work and say stupid things like "Looks Like It should Work" or worse, "Probably needs a new belt" when they don't even know what a belt is. I've had years of dealing with this type of thing, both for myself and for others.

    • @clydesight
      @clydesight 10 років тому +1

***** It sounds as if you are defending bad E-Bay sellers. Here's the base of it. A SELLER has an ethical responsibility to the buyer to report the item as accurately as possible because the buyer is unable to actually test of handle the item himself.
The SELLER is the one who wants the buyer to part with money for the item. It is the SELLER's obligation to present the product whatever it is, accurately and in as much TRUE detail as possible, which includes testing the equipment as thoroughly as possible or admitting that it is a risk purchase. Turning on a vintage radion and tuning in ONE station is NMOT a true test, and you know it. If you saw the item in a store and were going to BUY it, you'd do a lot more to it before making a decision. People sell battery cassette recorders all the time on E-Bay. How many times have I seen the words "Don't have the batteries to test it." when the thing takes 2 AA batteries and the seller wants $100 for the item! If I see such a listing, I go away from it, I know the SELLER is hiding a defect or is incredibly lazy.
The buyer is purchasing basically sight unseen, except for the photos the seller has put up. While it is true that a seller can ask any price he wants, the more reasonable the price, the more likely there will be a sale. Most SELLERS sell vintage electronics AS IS, which means if a buyer gets something that they thought would work, and if it doesn't, they are stuck. Try to do this in retail! You'd be out of business mighty fast. I did not exaggerate my statements about some E-Bay sellers and buyers, I reported my experience.

The best excuses i´ve come across so far:
Did not test it as it has no plug/plug had gone/plug cut off/no fuse/fuse missing....
Could not test it, no tape/record/cardrigde (anymore) but last time it worked like new.
Unit is too old for beeing switched on with no precaution taken (jep!:)
Unit only does operate on 120V (our local mains is 230V) and i do not have a inverter....
My all time favorite: Not sure how to operate this, but son/father/uncle/whoEver says it works just fine :) :) :)

I hate those lines too when they say it should work or they cant test it or they tested it but only plugged it in for a second and saw an indicator of it doing something. Im thinkin, just test the thing for all its functioning, just do it, or dont put up this confusing listing, cause then I dont know what to buy

What I can't stand is the ppl who are paying the higher prices for the best looking antique/vintage radios that gut them and put cheap Chinese radios with Bluetooth etc in them and relist them for $300 - 500. It's a shame these fine vintage items are being destroyed and gutted for modern Chinese junk.

If it's a stereo set, it's earliest vintage would be about 1958. THAT IS IN NO WAY ANTIQUE! To be antique, a device would have to be a His Master's Voice wind-up gramophone of the early-to-mid 1920s, OR OLDER!

Classroom RP's were usually built like tanks and will run forever if you take care of them. Personally, I like the older Newcomb and Audiotronics models. Califone units up through the early '80's were decent; but, got cheaper as the years went on. The main drawback to these RP's is that they usually track heavy and can rapidly wear LP's and 45's. 78's, however, should hold up much better on one (just make sure you get a 3 mil 78 stylus).

Yep, I also detest this greed. Unfortunately, buyers of stuff at these ludicrous prices have a lot to answer for (and probably more money than sense). I've been trying to get the type of old electrical junk (just to work on or salvage parts for my hobby) that people used to throw away and have been astounded by the amounts generated in bids. Obviously if there weren't buyers at these stupid prices we wouldn't see such prices.

First off - LOL you should start a series on here where all you do is go through listings of overpriced junk on the internet
Whats worse is there are people out there that will buy that stuff for those prices...
    So it's either a case of -
1 - They really just don't know the true value..
2 - The know are are trying to scam.
3 - They don't want to sell it but want to show it off (stupid but people do it)
4 - They restored it and are very proud of it
5 - They attache sentimental value cost to it..
6 - They feel they should get what they paid for it back when it was new plus interest.

I am also so sick of sellers saying everything is "rare." Rare, rare, rare! Even if the item looks like it went through every disaster known to man. If it s not in good, decent, usable shape, it is pretty much worthless to most people. If it's in good shape and needs some work to operate properly again, fine, but price it accordingly. I enjoy your videos, thank you!

In ref to the cost of record players becoming expensive on resell sites, I know it has become very popular for young "hipster" rich kids to pay A LOT of money for them. These are the same people that pay hundreds of dollars to look poor. In their minds it is not popular to be rich, so they hide their greed. Also, housing costs will sky rocket in the places they like to live..Portland, OR, San Francisco, CA, and where I live..Nashville, TN. They will pay 300.00 for a cheaply painted used desk that looks "vintage". Unfortunately, record players are considered "vintage and cool", so now I have to dip in my dwindling 401K to buy one :/

The whole overpriced junk thing has probably hurt the video game market the most. Gone are the days where I could go on craigslist or visit my local flea market and get a boxful of games for $10. Now almost everyone wants close to ebay prices for the stuff, even when it doesn't work! The worst example I've seen is this one moron on craigslist who has an ad for an "Old Atari Video Computer System & Games & Controls". It's a filthy system that probably doesn't work, it comes with like two games, really not worth dirt. How much does he want for it? TWO HUNDRED dollars. The annoying thing is he reposts the ad almost every day, and has done so for the past FIVE YEARS! No joke! You would think after 5 years, if no one's buying it, maybe you could, I don't know, LOWER THE PRICE A LITTLE BIT? Sorry for the caps lock on some of that, I'm just trying to get my point across here.
Going back to vintage electronics, there was another guy on craigslist who had a broken 32" Sony Trinitron from the late '90s. He wants $200 for it. And you know what? It hasn't sold yet. I sent him a respectfully-worded e-mail explaining to him that no one is going to pay that much for an old TV, let alone one that's BROKEN. Really, as shitty as the new TV's are, you could go out and buy one of them for LESS than what this guy wanted for his. He responded back with some very nasty language, basically saying I should keep my opinions to myself. All I could think of was "Well thanks buddy, I hope you enjoy that giant paperweight of yours!"
I'm sorry, that went on way too long. End rant.

Someone did this with a Waltham music centre on Ebay a while back, reasonable at first but then relisted for ridiculous money. These things were at best cheap'n'cheerful back in the day. Some of the Philips record players are put on Ebay with obscene prices, as are many other brands. The ALBA 642 stereo record player is VERY often seen without its second, stereo, speaker for silly money. As for Antiques Roadshow, American Pickers, etc, most of it's overpriced junk.

It seems to get worse each year! I am seeing Delco cassette decks going for $100 to $300 as the norm at times it seems. I can get them for $25 at the local junk yard with a return guarantee. I love restoring old vintage electronics, but seems to be less and less as time goes on due to all the over pricing of things. I tend to see things listed as broken for $50 and up. If there is a good deal, then the shipping is over inflated. Just be cause it has the word Bose on it or has tubes in it doesn't mean it's worth more! Seems you can't get a tube amp for under $100 working or non working.

Who in their right mind would want to pay close to 5 grand for a 50's Magnavox radiogram? It's big and hideous. You could buy a good used car for that amount! Sounds like a rip-off to me. The same can be said of some Gumtree (Aussie site) ads - some people list items for ridiculously high prices, because they watched "American Pickers" or "Pawn Stars" - so naturally they assume the item is worth way more than the asking price and has significant historical value, when in many cases it's just the opposite.
I will occasionally buy something on eBay if I need it and cannot obtain it locally but only if the price is right and only if it's BUY-IT-NOW - I never bid.

Yeah, I've seen the completed ebay listings where a cheap radio or record player would bring big money from two people who got in a bidding war. Then, more of the same product comes out of the woodwork; but, they often don't bring big money. It's always the one or two high priced sales that people see and think they can get that much for theirs. They don't stop to think about the 10,000 other sales that ended in single digits.

    Some of my favorites!
Everything they are selling is "Rare". Yet, no where in the description do they ever justify what makes the item "Rare". I guess, if it's the only one currently on Ebay, then it's "Rare". Generally, these descriptions are usually followed with "I'm no expert".
"Art Deco". If it has funny looking print or numbers on it, then it's automatically "Art Deco", even it was made in 1962,
"Last Patent Date". They base the age of the item on the "Last Patent Date" . I've seen items made in the 50's advertised as 1931 because that what the last patent date says. I guess the older they can make it appear, the more valuable it has to be.
"Atomic Age Mid-Century Eames Era Post-Industrial Pre-War Clock Radio. RARE!" What the hell does all that mean????

There is a Zenith A835R on Ebay, the EXACT model I'm looking for, non restored (because it wouldn't be any fun if it worked), the right finish (the darker wood one), and the guy wants $375. I put in an offer of what it was worth ($50) and he declined it. I waited a few days and offered $65. After a bit of back and forth, he got down to $175 but that was his lowest. This one surprised me in that it actually had a built in coax cable connector on the back, the old Philco built Sears Silvertone console we used to own did not have that, we had to use a Balun connector to run it off the cable, but I think it was a 1972 model. That set finally got replaced in 1987 by an RCA XL100 21 inch table model, the CRT was weak and the turret tuner was broken. This Panasonic will be 37 years old next month and the CRT is strong, it's only a 14'' though.

The main problem with excess greedy sellers that u see on ebay compared to say 10-20 years ago is that u see 5 new items pop up and they might all be worth $100, but say $150-$200 or best offer. So most likely the items don't sell, and get relisted.
When ebay was more auction driven deals were mor deals to be had, and sellers didn't have to constantly relist.

I agree! I once heard a saying(well several times at least) that something's only worth what someone will pay you for it! I don't know if you've noticed, but it seems that lately I'll see something that is more reasonably priced but then when you see what they want to ship it is absolutely unreal! It seems that they try to make big bucks either way. But thanks for writing and posting this because it's true and the unrealistic overpricing sellers should learn something.

You are correct. I used to make good $ selling used CRT TV's; but, everyone has gotten picky about what they'll watch and if it isn't flatscreen, they don't want it. In today's world, I'm lucky to get $25 for any kind of CRT TV and they must be later model TV's with jacks. Older CRT sets without input jacks are almost impossible to get rid of and forget about getting rid of a floor model TV.

this is awesome stuff. we can razz the retreads that also try to rip us on high shipping charges. i got into a tiff with one guy that had a small weather radio i wanted and its the size of a regular transistor radio which would ship anywhere in the USA for about 6 bucks. this guy wanted 14.95 for the radio and 89.75 for shipping. i asked what the deal was and he replied...oh this is for shipping AND handling! cmon, sellers, give us a break. i guess some of these sellers think we are stupid. keep posting these ridiculous things you find. we love it!

I hear what you're saying... and I agree with most of it... BUT this is a knife that cuts both ways.... There are some TIGHT-ASS buyers out there, who only want something, if they can absolutely steal it! I sell vintage auto restoration parts... There is always they guy, who feels his car is worth $60,000... But heaven-for-bid, he should have to pay $30.00 for a difficult to find tail light lens for it! And yes, you can argue that is a buyers prerogative to find something cheap...But then I guess it's also a seller's prerogative, to ask the moon for what he's selling... After all, you don't ask...You won't get!

Absolutely spot on mate. I do that all the time with grand pianos here in the UK. People sometimes ask what I consider to be ridiculous prices for knackered old pianos, and if you try to make em an offer they'll generally turn it down or tell you that it's well out of they're figure, or that they're not in a hurry to sell and then re-list the item if it doesn't sell.
I see the same pianos come up nearly every month for the last 4 years. Then again if I didn't ask a seller, I wouldn't know what they'd accept, sometimes someone is willing to accept your offer.
What the other guy above said about not accepting advice from people he doesn't know, OK fair enough but I also agree with others that this could be someone giving you valuable insight and experience so you don't have to learn the hard way. It's up to you if you want to take that advice.
Also a message like that is no different to what goes on at things like car boot sales, charity shops or flea markets (here in Glasgow we call our market the Bara's), people will always try to haggle you that's a fact of life in any sale that shops also need to put up with, so someone messaging you shows that they obviously took SOME interest in your product and might consider buying if you were willing to negotiate with them.

I fully agree with you on this! For some reason, sellers get the idea that because something is old, it must be worth a fortune! I have lost count of the number of times I see vintage televisions on EBay with sky-high asking prices. I frequently see 1980s colour sets worth about $20, with asking prices exceeding $100!

Another option would be to buy something like an Akai or a Dual machine from the mid 80s and earlier, something that is a name brand with a counter balanced tone arm. They are two common types of counterbalancing, those with weights and those with springs, the Duals often used springs where you could adjust the tracking weight by turning a dial. If you like older stuff some of the Garards were pretty good as
well, but they you may have cartridge problems.

Out of frustration, some people probably toss the stuff. More bullheaded people probably take the "someone will eventually buy it" attitude. There were some local flea market dealers who had that attitude and they eventually went out of business. One shop was having a so-called "going out of business" sale and even the sale prices were too high. She said she'd let the stuff rot before she took a penny less than what she was asking.

I think the majority of eBay sellers asking these outrageous prices are scammers. They want top dollar for non-working crap then can't pack it worth a you know what. And if you do get it in the mail, it probably comes in a thousand pieces. Walked away from eBay a long time ago and so glad I did.

I was trying to find a WB cartoon of 16mm or a Disney 16mm movie and it was way overpriced. I saw three reels of the Disney animated film "Peter Pan", and the price to bid is $1,500. What a waste! I still have the 1990 VHS of "Peter Pan". I have to be very careful if you are a film collector, why not get cartoons that are cheaper that the higher priced ones I'm aware of that.

I finally found someone that agrees with me! My issue is with Craigslist. I'm a mother. I am unemployed. I have no choice but to find free items for my home. It is impossible to get something because these bottom feeders wait all day for a new post, they get it for free, slap some paint on it, then sell it for a profit 3'x the amount. They are stealing from the poor. They take the items and put it in their "vintage" shop. So, I am declaring war on them. I am going to spend every second waiting for items. Paint them, and resell them for cheap. I am going to compete them out of business. Maybe this coming year, my child can have a Christmas!

I like the way you make these rants, they are very funny and I agree wholeheartedly with what you are saying. I like vintage media to,Like wire recorders and things like that. Let me tell you what happened to me one time, I was looking for this book are used to have on cassette tape, but now I want it on CD. It’s called, there was a boy in the girls bathroom, I found it online. Guess how much they wanted for it, it was in the hundreds. That is so ridiculous, I asked my family why people do things like that and sell it for that much money, and they said that people are greedy, nobody cares about history anymore, they only care about the money. Well, I finally did find the exact same version I had on cassette, I found it on Bard mobile.

I think its ok when people sell carefully restored stuff for a slightly high amount of money, but when i see stuff that sometimes isnt even testet for a grand or something just because 'its old' there is definately something wrong. One thing I hate Even more is when they buy Radios, TVs etc, take the speaker drivers out and sell them for unreasonable prices to 'audiophiles' because they hype them and put them in their butt ugly listening rooms in fancy cabinets.

agree with you about these greedy e bay sellers. most sellers are ok and reasonable about their prices. my main interest now is the rca 45 record players made from 1949 to 1957. most of them will require at least $100.00 of parts ( modern cartridge/stylus,idler wheel, cam gear wheel, electric cord, co-axial cable. the ones with amp units will need at least capacitor, resistor replacement, sometimes tubes to function) to restore them not counting plastic polish and electronic spray cleaner. i will not pay excessive amounts to purchase these players on ebay. maybe a max of 30.00 + shipping. i can see why restored units sell for 200.00 and up. again some are greedy and i see the same listings repeat over and over for same price or more.

Like anything in the non-life essential market, it's worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it. I've sold 99 cent items for 25 dollars on Ebay. I didn't twist anybody's arm. People with deep pockets just gotta have it. I posted a rare music box for a overinflated "Buy it Now" price for shits and giggles. Estimated value was closer to 20 dollars. I actually had an offer for 75 dollars. The point is I don't have to sell it, but if you have to have it, here it is. As Forest Gump said, "stupid is what stupid does"

It's really crazy some of the internet price hoaxes today. Like apparently any Disney VHS tapes that bear the "Black Diamond" logo are worth $10,000 because they're "very rare". And apparently at one point someone was stupid enough to pay that price (which personally I think that's just s rumor). But yet I see those tapes quite often. Heck I have a couple that were GIVEN to me just because people wanted rid of them (which is a common problem with VHS tapes is you have too many people trying to get rid of thrm, and not enough people who want them). Yes, they might be some of the more collectable VHS tapes out there and if you have some of the black diamond tapes, you might be able to throw them on Ebay as a lot for a few dollars, but other than that, good luck. Heck, I even watched some of those tapes that people were trying to sell for 10,000 to 20,000 dollars just to see if anyone would buy then and of course, no one did.

There is a white 13" '76 Teknika color TV at the flea market for the bargain price of $75. The owner is 80something years old and is determined that someone will eventually pay her price. We have the same crap sellers here also. Someone listed a very beat up 1940's farm radio for $450. He thinks he's a "know it all" saying it can be run on a car battery which we know is impossible. It was just out of the mice ridden barn complete with all the dirt and didn't have the decency to even bother to clean it off. It never sold. Imagine that. Lots of Mag consoles on CL here saying they're antique from the 50's and obviously from the 70's with 8 track players. They usually ask $250 and up

Hi I found your rant by accident while watching a guy i subscribe to. I totally agree with what you say. i have been looking at backhoe loaders on ebay and online in general. The descriptions and prices are freaking hilarious. last one the machines supposed to be fantastic according to the price and description. then looking at the picture there is $3000 plus of mangled doors on the cab. Kinda tells me the rest might not be so good and immaculate either. it's worth about $8000 not the $14000 they want. I used to sell tractors local, it used to be amazing trying to sell perfect equipment for say $10.000 big machinery dealers would want 15.000 plus. I would get assholes offer $5000 as thats what they make in auction sales. What I used to tell them before G. F.O was yeah I seen the crap that makes 5000 in auction, it needs another 8000 spent on it before you can use it, this one is gone through and perfect !!!!. I got fed up with that crap and stopped buying to sell in the end!. sometimes if I had $1000 for every tire kicker that came or called I would be richer just advertising than selling the tractors. Regards Robert
