- Stephen Lang (George Pickett), Tom Berenger (James Longstreet), Brian Mallon (Winfield Scott Hancock) and Ron Maxwell (Director) talk to the crowd at the famous Majestic Theater in Gettysburg before a special screening of the director's cut of the film.
This panel was part of the anniversary weekend celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the Gettysburg Movie.
The American Battlefield Trust preserves America’s hallowed battlegrounds and educates the public about what happened there and why it matters. We permanently protect these battlefields for future generations as a lasting and tangible memorial to the brave soldiers who fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. - Розваги
I bought this movie about 15 years ago and have faithfully watched it, all 4 hours of it, at least 20 times. No other movie has had this effect on me, and I'm 60.
I’m 59, and I feel the same way. If I’m having trouble sleeping, I’ll play it on my IPhone and I’m a sleep in 10 minutes, lol! I also have my original DVD from when it was released, but do yourself a favor, and get the remastered Blue Rey dvd, it’s a pretty big difference between the two.
Gettysburg is still one of the best films about the Civil War. One that tells it like it is, and doesn't pander to an agenda. I love it!
You mean the movie based off the book of a guy telling his version of what happened? K.
Gettysburg was the greatest Civil War movie of all time! I was absolutely disgusted that the movie Gettysburg was totally snubbed by Hollywood. Gettysburg didn't even receive one nomination for the academy awards! This movie could have easily been nominated for best picture, best cinematography, best costumes, best music, and so on! Gettysburg, despite its snub from Hollywood, is an epic, classic film that will stand the test of time! The acting was phenomenal. The fact that it was filmed on location was incredible. When watching Gettysburg, I feel that I went back in time. The acting was so well done that I got to meet and know the men at Gettysburg! This movie is a gem for all who love US History!😊
Brian Mallon, you brought Winfield Hancock to life. Truly amazing performance.
I love the scene when Brian Mallon , as General Hancock stated, said, " There are times when a core commander's life doesn't count." Then shortly after he got shot. That scene was epic!
@@anthonypetrozzelli5429 the aid that runs up and asks him to get down was Ken Burns who directed the documentary on the Civil War
What I love about this film is the fact that it stuck to the book almost word for word. I read the book, then we went to the movie when it opened. It was phenomenal. We bought the movie and have watched it a lot and always watch it around the 4th of July no matter what. We have traveled to Gettysburg twice and we are going again (and also visiting other battlefields) this week. This place is hallowed ground for sure. It is a must see for everyone. Thank you for making a remarkable film.
Tom Berenger, still stirs my heart. One of my heart throbs since General Hospital,,, he absolutely made my heart pound in Last Of The Dogmen,, ❤
I was a confederate extra on Gods and Generals and had the opportunity to meet Mr. Maxwell, Mr. Lang, and several other actors. I can honestly say it was the most rewarding experience of my life helping bring the Civil War to life - the cast and crew were all wonderful, the food was great, and it was so much fun. Ron, please make the "Last Full Measure" I'm ready to march to the sound of the guns again!
Lang as Jackson is the best thing about that movie.
@@oldrestless Mr. Lang is a wonderful actor, student of civil war history, and human being.
It was a big disappointment that the last full measure wasn't made. I was looking forward to the final of the triology only to find out it was never made. Maybe one day it will I hope.
I'd love to see The Last Full Measure made. But seeing how bad Gods and Generals was, I can't see it coming to fruition. That movie was a huge money loser. But let's hope that it's made - without the drama and with much more battle action.
@@Tomatohater64 Gods was not that bad, but it certainly was too long on dialogue. If they cut some of that out and had more battle scenes it would have been better. I was in it I should now LOL.
Very nostalgic and moving movie for me. I had ancestors on both sides in the war. PA/AL
Such a treat.
Without question one of the most iconic films ever made a true American classic. 🇺🇸
I've seen this movie a several times and own it. Shared it with my dad. He loved it.
My all time favourite stand-alone movie, but I wish it had been made as a trilogy with a separate movie for each day. So much heroism on both sides was skipped over.
Nice to see Brian Mallon again as well. According to Google he kind of dropped out of the movie scene after Gettysburg and moved to Ireland. He has aged (haven't we all), but that voice is still Winfield Scott Hancock to me.
Notification on! So cool of you to share this footage ❤
I can't wait.
Did they show a cut of the movie that’s even longer than the four and a half hour DC that’s been out for a while?
Hello, respect, appreciation, and gratitude from São Paulo, Brazil 🇧🇷🇧🇷.
Beringer mistakenly says that Andrew Prine played Pender in the film. Prine played Garnett. Pender wasn't portrayed in the movie. Obviously, only a true Civil War buff could make that mistake. So we salute you, Tom.
Was at the 30th, great
awesome and really an unfortunate battle for the North and the South soldiers. God Bless all of their souls.
And we were there. . .I found us in the audience at 0:18! What an awesome experience.
DEEP envy from Canada.
Mmm I wish I could have been there. Just to see the director cut alone would have been amazing
Did you get over to the Lincoln Dinner across the street.
Great breakfast there. 😊
Love Gods and Generals too
Kinda surprised there weren't more cast members. We did the panel of God's and Generals in 2011 they had a pretty large group of actors there.
Around 20 of the actors were there.
We were there at the theater that day!😊
Anybody know why Stephen has a head covering?
Was Martin Sheen at any of the Anniversary events?
Short answer, from what I hear... no.
An event and a film History 🙏👍🇺🇸
Do we get to see the movie???
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Good God, Almighty 0:10 Berenger is almost unrecognizable ..somehow, this is not how I envisioned him aging
As a nation let us not forget what they did there! HAIL GETTYSBURG!!!
Almost ALL historically based films are unacceptably flawed by their makers' prejudices and current political activism. The Makers of Gettysburg gace Us a film free of that; it is nearly one of a kind.
The only problem I had was casting Martin Sheen as General Lee. 🤮
I guess Jeff Daniels is too woke now to show up.
Are you complaining because the man isn’t a racist like you are now?
If only...."Don't fight uphill me boys!"😂
Pretty bad movie; terrible direction, use of overaged and overweight reenactors who strike poses, some really bad acting, horrible beards and a general low rent air of made for TV. Compare this with the professional Hollywood polish and efficiency of Glory.
You must be joking.
Pretty bad take;
But try to hear me out here…
This is a historical film. The most important question to ask when determining if it is good or bad is: Did it get the history right? Everything else is secondary. But you focus on the more artistic elements of its production so let’s break it down.
The film was actually intended to be a miniseries for TNT, so I guess that’s where that “air” comes from. In order to appeal to the sensibilities of a wide TV audience, several elements such as combat depiction and discourse of slavery and the southern cause had to be watered down.
Yes, Glory is absolutely the better Civil War film and no, Ron Maxwell is no Edward Zwick. But no one else before or since has dared to create something with the same scale, detail, and faithfulness to the subject matter. Ron did come back a decade later with Gods & Generals but I think we can all agree that film was disappointing. Gettysburg’s directing was not terrible by any stretch. It was merely passable to allow the film to accomplish what it sets out to do, which is to depict the battle as accurately as possible.
As to those “overaged and overweight reenactors”: the film simply would not have happened without them. You simply can’t find that amount of men _anywhere_ who possess the equipment, weaponry, clothing, historical knowledge, and physical build of a 17-25 year old Civil War soldier. Not to mention, these men _volunteered_ to be in this film so you’re talking about thousands of men who were willing to work on and off set for weeks on end without even being paid.
As a whole, the acting is not as bad as you have led yourself to believe. There were a number of phenomenal casting choices for this film, which carried memorable performances. Jeff Daniels, Stephen Lang, Sam Elliot, Richard Jordan, and Kevin Conway more than made up for any “really bad acting” you may have perceived. Even Marin Sheen, who probably receives a lot of flak for his portrayal of Lee and I would agree to the notion that he was not as good as many had hoped , had some great moments.
I hope this will, if not change your mind, at least convince you to rethink your analysis of this remarkable film. Flaws and all. Now, as a certain someone said: “Let us speak no more of this.”
@@cyhawk4788 Well Hawk, as a character in a much better movie said, you honor the unworthy.
@@tombrennan6312 it is the opinion of some excellent UA-camrs and commenters that you have let us all down. There will be none of these one-liner quips or “no, you’re just wrong” counter arguments, there is no time. Tom, your mission was to either restructure your criticism of _Gettysburg_ instead of painting it with a “nothing good about this film” and not even consider the lasting impacts it has had in today’s community of historians, and to explain in further detail with examples each of your points. That mission was not fulfilled. You came here and dropped a bomb with no word of your intentions or reasoning behind such claims. Meanwhile, a few of us were engaged here. Drawn into this thread without adequate knowledge of this film’s apparent endless amount of shortcomings. So it is only by God’s grace that we did not meet disaster here by getting into some sort of twitter style, ad hominem argument. Perhaps you did not read my comment in its entirety, perhaps the points I made were not clear. Well sir, this must be _very_ clear. You, sir, are the leading voice of criticism in this comment section. Without a proper explanation from you we are made blind. That has already happened once. It must never, _never,_ happen again.
Gettysburg was a great movie.
