In today's video, we're diving into the essential topic of banned accessories in pickleball. By the end of this video, you will learn all about the modifications and features that are prohibited by the 2024 USA Pickleball Official Rulebook. Ensuring your equipment meets these standards is crucial for maintaining fair play and the integrity of the sport.
🔴 What You'll Learn:
1. Paddle Modifications:
We'll start with the key points about paddle modifications. While some minor adjustments are allowed, there are strict limitations to ensure fairness. We'll explain permissible alterations like edge guard tape replacements and grip size changes. But more importantly, we'll highlight prohibited alterations, including anti-skid paint, rubber particles, and sandpaper-like textures designed to increase spin.
2. Paddle Surface Features:
Next, we cover the requirements for paddle surfaces. Reflective surfaces that could affect an opponent’s vision are banned, and only small handwritten markings for identification purposes are allowed. No aftermarket graphics are permitted on the playing surface.
3. Paddle Size and Weight:
We'll go over the dimensions that paddles must adhere to. The combined length and width must not exceed 24 inches, with a maximum length of 17 inches. While there's no restriction on thickness, weight adjustments that affect gameplay are not allowed.
4. Apparel and Accessories:
Safety and lack of distraction are paramount in pickleball. We'll discuss the importance of wearing apparel that doesn't match the ball's color and footwear that won’t damage the court. Additionally, any inappropriate graphics or messages on clothing are prohibited.
5. Ball Specifications:
The ball's design and construction are also regulated. It must be a uniform color with a smooth surface, free of texturing, and have between 26 and 40 circular holes. We'll explain the importance of using only balls from the USA Pickleball Approved Ball List in sanctioned tournaments.
6. Electronic Devices:
To maintain focus and avoid distractions, players are not allowed to wear headphones or earbuds during matches, with the exception of necessary hearing aids.
They should add a rule about not allowing paddles that are the same color as the ball. It is very hard to pick up the ball. Where I saw this was an orange paddle and orange ball.
MLP does have rules covering this.
I’d add excessive white on paddles like Selkirk does on a model. It’s hard to see the ball coming off it
