7 year old me watched my friend being born during the hurricane at my home. My greatgrand aunt delivered her. My greatgrand aunt home was the only home in the community that wasn't destroyed & 30 people was living in a 4 bedroom house. She really did help alot of people out for a few months until everyone got back on their feet.

I was 12 years old when Gilbert hit Jamaica and I remember it so well I am still traumatised by it....
I was 11 going on 12 when that happened. I lived in Kingston near the foothills. My mom went through Hurricane Hattie in Belize, then British Honduras in 1961. It was a Cat 5. She knew exactly what we were in for. Luckily we lived on high ground in a steel reinforced concrete townhouse built like a bunker. Got a front row seat to Armageddon. Gilbert was recorded then as being the most intense hurricane. When it hit Jamaica it was a Cat 4, when it hit Mexico it was a Cat 5. Luckily passing north of Belize.
Hurricane Gilbert hit Jamaica September 12, 1988. I was 9 years young and still remembered it vividly.

Hurrcain Gilbert was 1987 I believe, not 1998
Thanks Joan, typing error, we just corrected it. Hurricane Gilbert passed over Jamaica, September 12 - 13, 1988.
Yes, it was 1988. I was right there at Mountain View Ave Kingston, eager to see it, as it was the first hurricane was going to experience. What an experience that was, especially after the eye . It was the first I ate so much cow kidney from mr Thompson, because electricity was out and he didn’t want it to go to waste in his shop. I was one of his tenants. I didn’t want see kidney after a while. Lol
