    What you are actually measuring there is Parallelism, not Flatness.
    For Flatness, you would need to mount the surface in question down on 3 o 4 blocks or towers to isolate the surface. Then turn 180° your probe to take measurements.

    That part could be out of tolerance for flatness.With concaved surface on the bottom there would be no rocking motion.Flatness is not related to condition of other surface like in this example. It is form of one surface and should be measured independently. I'm surprised that large mfg. like Suburban Tools are showing this as way of measuring flatness.

      Wow well I guess u should measure flatness in plain space because we know space is flat 😂 wow and u got 14 like for what 😡
      Well even NIST certifies grand master off a known surface
      And he is in a qc room probably kept at 68 degrees Fahrenheit with a surface plate calibrated with grade aa certification I would probably be safe to say that part is flat to within whatever the surface it’s measure off flatness and the metrology used to verify GET LOST

      Agreed that is not how you check flatness. Proper way would be to put on to a 3 jack stand, level them then run the test indicator over the surface

    SIR I THINK WHAT YOU SHOULD TO USE WAS PARALLELISN AND NOT FLATNESS

    it is informative, but is kind of hard to see what where your measuring because your hand are on the way. maybe a if you position the camera in a different angle would help.

    which surface need to butted on surface table, the surface which we measure or opposite for flatness inspection?

    sir, what if the part just require for parallelism, and you have a part with a concave or convex surface it just parallel it self, does that part are acceptable?

      @@SuburbanToolInc What is that mitutoyo device that shows the scale and how does it work? you talked about setting it to a specific range? what is the tightest resolution you can get? thank you.

    What is the difference between Flatness & Parallelism in terms of measuring method?

    • @ObelixCMM
      @ObelixCMM 5 років тому +1

      Parallelism is relation between two surfaces (what he is measuring in this video), flatness is form condition of the single surface.

      What he is getting there is a Parallelism reading, (the granite rock/plate simulates the datum) Parallelism requires a Datum. Flatness is the relationship/behavior of a single flat surface/plane. Flatness is comparing all readings to a virtually perfect flat plane sandwiched between the high and low spots of the machined surface areas. It's in my opinion very difficult to obtain the proper flatness readings without a CMM or setting it up upside-down on 3 points and using a dial indicator to sweep the surface for high and low spots. Look up GD&T for flatness definition for details.

    wouldn't it be faster with an optical flat?

    yah, not helpful at all.
