      The plan to invade holland by Montgomery was a very bold and dangerous plan. But the biggest reason it failed is because either the intelligence was either way off or they said it was mostly old men and kids to give the allies more confidence. In not sure witch but it led to the biggest loss for the allies for the entire war

    • @johnski4709
      @johnski4709 6 років тому

      Biggest reason it failed was because there were two veteran elite SS Panzer divisions from the Eastern Front resting and refitting in Holland. Due to faulty intelligence the Allies dropped basically right on top of them.

    I actually had the honor of meeting and talking to Bull Randelman several times. He was a very humble man. Very Soft spoken. I knew he had served in Easy CO 101st 506 PIR. I knew some of what they had done, but not to the extent of it. He didn't talk much about it. He played off the seriousness of his injury, stating so many more were hurt far worse than I was. I was even at his funeral. He's Buried in Texarkana Texas. I live in Longview, TX only about a hr and a half car ride away. I told him I was in the Navy, He said I have no idea how you guys do what you do on those ships, and not be afraid of combat at sea. He would not accept any personal praise for his actions. He would always turn it and praise you and not himself. He was a genuine caring man. It was a honor to be able to meet him.

    • @jjp4674
      @jjp4674 6 років тому +18

      It had less to do with sensibility and more to do with "shit, shit, how do I carry all this stuff that I'm going to need while fighting completely cut off behind enemy lines and unable to be resupplied?".
      Paratroopers would thus end up strapping things all over their bodies. Their uniforms had additional pockets to carry gear, they'd tie items to their arms, legs or wherever they could just to be able to carry as much as they possibly could.
      The standard infantryman carried a bandage as well, but it was in a pouch which hung from his cartridge belt. The paratrooper bandage was a little larger because, in addition to a bandage, each paratrooper also had a syrette of morphine and a tourniquet, while the standard infantryman only carried a bandage.
      Probably more information than you cared to know about WWII bandages. ;)

    • @marinesinspace6253
      @marinesinspace6253 6 років тому +5

      Gotta love the story behind the Leg Bag too. Paratroopers needed a lot of stuff right? Can't carry a bag on your back, because of the parachute, solution? Make a bag that straps around the soldiers leg! Until he jumps out of the aircraft and the wind shear tears it off of him, leaving a lot of soldiers without any equipment or ammunition. Hence the scene in this episode about where to secure your weapons and ammo!

    I'm fascinated by those 1 on 1 moments in any war movie or show, because they all have them, but it is a matter of when and how they utilize them. They are obviously a reminder of how basic and gruesome a conflict such as this really is, but often times they also serve to remind the audience that it's not all black and white, meaning calm or bloodlust, it's also about the inner battle to keep one's sanity and, to some degree, humanity.
    That Nixon fake out though lol, that is a 1 in a million shot, but the guy lived to tell the story, and if you noticed, he kept the helmet the rest of the episode, and you could see the dent the bullet left.
    Important lesson with this show: no matter how calm the scene, be prepare for an explosion at any second. I'm really sorry for people with anxiety...

    Since this series follows Easy company, an American unit, the British fight at Arnhem only get a small mention at the end. But they're story should also be told. At Arnhem lay the third bridge that was to be secured by the British 1st Airborne supported by Polish paratroopers. One Division, 10 000 men, were supposed to hold the bridge for two days until the armored spearhead reached them. Only a single battalion, around 800 men got through the German lines to take the bridge. Under lieutenant colonel John Frost, the British held the bridge for four days while surrounded and under constant pressure from the 9th and 10th SS Panzer Divisions. The Allied tanks never even got close to Arnhem and after four days of relentless fighting with no ammunition left and only a 100 men still fit to fight Frost, and what was left of his battalion, finally surrendered.

    I just found these reactions and I'm really happy you did them for such an excellent series. I know this is a bit late as its been a few years since you uploaded these videos, but if you're at all curious about the larger Operation Market Garden, I would highly recommend 'A Bridge Too Far'. It's an excellent movie that covers the entire operation and has a massive all-star cast, for its time (mid 70s). Of course like all movies it does take some historical liberties for the sake of making a movie, but overall it does a really good job of portraying the operation.

    Operation Market Garden was a failure from the start. Day drops ensured that the Germans would be able to figure out where the paratroopers and their supplies were landing and what their goal was, the radios were not made for the low sea level and woody terrain of Holland, the British ignored the warnings from the Dutch Resistance out of pure distrust, the RAF were unwilling to drop the gliders closer to the bridges needed to be captured because of the high risk terrain (despite having done similar drops in Normandy), and XXX Corp was forced to progress on a single elevated highway that subjected them to numerous ambushes that led to the 1st British Airborne being cut off and divided. It's estimated over 15,000 casualties were suffered by the Allies over those nine days. In the end, Field Marshal Montgomery did what he did best and shifted blame onto the Polish 1st Independent Parachute Brigade and their general, Stanislaw Sosabowski.

      @PeterEvansPeteTakesPictures 5 років тому

      Interesting comment on Leo Major / Montgomery there, didn't know that. Must read up on that.
      I've mixed feelings on 'Monty'. He had some qualities. His organisational ability and the way he could inspire the rank and file and secure the equipment they needed was laudable, he never froze in the front of the enemy and his planning was solid, if unspectacular. The big downsides were his arrogance, his inability to admit mistakes and his inflexibility. His mistrust of ideas not his own and his mania for methodical, slow battle plans meant many a time a chance for breakthrough escaped him. His unusually slapdash planning of Market Garden (the backdrop to this episode) is unforgivable. It wasn't surprising most other officers ended up despising him over his desperate hunger for self-promotion.
      But then again he did win victories. Plodding, fumbling, sometimes costly victories but victories nonetheless. His slow-but-sure approach was probably born of the horrific waste of lives he saw in WW1, an understandable hang-up amongst most Brit officers. I really wish we'd had better generals in the UK in that war, but we certainly could have had worse.
      By the way, if you get the chance listen to the archive 1969 BBC recording of him on Desert Island Discs, his clipped arrogance is pretty amusing!

    There were actually a lot of love stories between German soldiers and women from the countries they occupied. By the end of the war over 12mio Germans fought on the front, and a lot of them were just impressionable young men, who were "fighting for their country". They weren't necessarily the stereotypical Nazi going around murdering everybody. In some places(especially in Western Europe) there wasn't much tension between the occupiers and the occupied, so young people fell in love, and even married. But a lot of those young women had to pay a heavy price for their love after the war.

    Quick note about the US ration chocolate that they gave to the little boy...in case nobody mentioned it...it may have been made in a Hershy's factory, but it was not the same as actual Hershey bars. It was not sweet, and was formulated so that it would survive in the field and NOT be eaten too quickly by the troops. It tasted more like baker's chocolate, was heat resistant and many soldiers referred to it as "Hitler's secret weapon".
    Of course, it still makes sense that the boy would still be amazed...he must have been barely walking when the Nazis took the Netherlands, and living out in the country, of course it is highly likely he never tasted chocolate of any kind.✌

    The sister series to this is The Pacific. Same deal but obviously set in the Pacific theater and following the US Marines (Semper Fi) 1st Division (Big Red One) weapons platoon through their ordeals from Guadalcanal all the way to Japan's surrender. It focuses on real life characters such as Robert Leckie (who became an author "Helmet For My Pillow" which the series is based on), Eugene Sledge (also an author, "The Old Breed") and Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. John Basilone. This is extra interesting for me because i was a machine gunner and Basilone is well known to me from training. Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg created it as well.

    Interesting little bit of history, the officer who was shot in the neck, Lieutenant Robert Brewer, survived his wounds and went on after the war to have a long career working for the CIA eventually retiring from the US Army at the rank of Colonel.

    What they did to those women is something that happened all over Europe, whenever an area got liberated.
    Everyone suffered under German occupation, some people collaborated with the Germans and snitched out their fellow countrymen, making matters even worse.
    Obviously those people were despised by everyone, and were totally ostracized, if not murdered, after the war ended.
    Point is, people hated the Germans and anyone who could be deemed a "collaborator", and they wanted revenge.
    But obviously, since that's how things tend to go, they went too far sometimes, and this is just one example.
    There were women who slept with the soldiers to get extra food or luxuries or whatever, or were just too afraid of the Germans to reject their advanced, or were just straight up raped.
    Then there were some who just actually grew to like one of the German soldiers, that can happen after all, foreign occupiers or not, in the end all soldiers are just people, not all of them are evil, and they were living in close proximity with the local civilians. ing the Germans.

    The only reason they signed at being under British command is that they don't know how the British go about things and aren't really eager to risk their lives for commanders that they don't know. Montgomery was a hell of a general and he's known here in America too but those guys didn't know him lol.

    Regarding the women who slept with the germans. They filmed it so that you feel something for these people because they are people. More importantly not all the germans who fought were Nazis. Some didnt even want to fight for the Nazis but had no choice. The world is and always has been a horrible place. Lastly the majority of the forces the allies fought in France were conscripts of conqured nations.

      @John Cornell I'd ask by what metric? And being "successful", whatever that means, has no bearing on his being a knobhead. He was pro-Apartheid, pro-Communist China, and from all accounts he was a conniving little shit who couldn't let go of a grudge, and who whined and cried until he got his way. No matter how many people died to do so.
