Dinorwic Vivian Quarry incline V2

- The terraces and inclines of the Vivian Quarry dominate the backscene to Gilfach Ddu station at Llanberis, where the National Slate Museum's restored V2 incline is a prominent feature. Normally the incline is operated 3 days a week by the museum to show the movement of the "tanciau", the incline platforms that carry the slate wagons. But its full set up of supporting infrastructure, including two traversers, a series of spur sidings and a fleet of Dinorwic quarry wagons, have never seen action since restoration. All that's needed to make it work is two teams of men in flat caps and scruffy overcoats and some traditional Welsh weather.

I've seen this incline many times while on holiday in the area, unfortunately I've never seen it working. Absolutely fascinating to see how it was operated and how the operation differs from the other somewhat more basic inclines neighbouring it.

This is probably the original basis of Owen the Incline Engine from the Thomas & Friends movie: Blue Mountain Mystery.
With some differences obviously being that this incline uses gravity and not a steam power pulley like what we see with Owen and this incline does not have a transfer table at the bottom to transfer slate from the narrow gauge line to the standard gauge line

If they have restored it “as built” the brake was a massive band around the winding drum, but unfortunately when I filmed this there was no public access to the winding house
I wonder how long it took to lay that slate making the incline. :-/

We have a long horrendous incline in the South Island of New Zealand, serving a coal mine. Unfortunately, most of the works are now long gone. However, you can take a trip down the coal min e.
The one in the South Island New Zealand is the Denniston Incline. Well worth a visit if you are in Westpost, there is also a Coal Muesem in Westport that has a lot of infomation on Coal mining and the Denniston Incline. There are clip on You Tube on The Denniston Incline. At least they are restoring The Denniston. Cheers.
It’s amazing what can be done with time and money - when I lived in NZ in the 1960’s the highlight of many children’s playgrounds was the old steam loco you could play on, I understand that many of these have subsequently been rescued and returned to steam!
How often do they operate the incline would love to see it all working

It looks as though the entire ramp, top to bottom, is built with slate? No mortar? Just slate stacked upon slate?
I don’t know about no mortar, but yes made of slate
Specially I believe the slate that wasn't good enough to sell. The locals built practically everything out of it, which makes sense really. Why transport material up into the mountains, when the material you're literally carving out of the mountain is perfect for the the job.

They sell slate gift items, but the quarry is not worked, however nearby quarries are still active

@@Domdeone1 Yes the incline is purely a working exhibit to demonstrate the principles of the inclines, and I believe that it is only run occasionally. The museum has in the past also run demonstrations of the hand cutting and shaping of slates. On the other side of the mountain the Penrhyn quarry is still active I believe, but using modern equipment see www.welshslates.com

Yes Nick, it’s part of the National Slate Museum and is just above the Llanberis Lake Railway. Not sure how often it is actually operated
