As someone who was greatly impacted by Derek Webb and Caedmon’s Call all through my teen and college years, I’m heart broken by this.. among other things, did he just say f***? Where have we gone? We love all who are in our lives without “celebrating” sin. When did sin become our identity? Those who have accepted Christ have Him as our identity, not our flesh, not our bodies, not our old selves, not our sin. We are all sinners. Christ has redeemed and replaced our identity with Himself. He didn’t celebrate our death, He conquered it. The narrow way is not unloving. It’s eternal salvation. We are ALL invited. But we are all asked to shed the former self. I’m heartbroken. How our Christian leaders have gone down a different path. Maybe the path of celebrity was never going to end well for so many. Celebrity musicians, worship leaders, pastors… yet I was moved by Derek’s reflections of Christ and faith for decades past. What am I supposed to do with this. On my knees. Praying for our lost sheep. It’s never too late to come home.

There's a huge difference between accepting and loving a person who sins, since we are ALL sinners, and condoning and accepting the actual sin. Narrow is the way to God. He is a loving, merciful and just God... and is very clear about what he will be judging. It is more loving to call out a person living in sin and on the road to destruction than it is to condone and embrace that sin.

I've been meaning to write this comment for months, but let's just say I've been a little preoccupied. It's a bit of a novel, but bear with me; there's a payoff at the end. I was at the house show you did in Dallas in 2019 (I think), between the release of Fingers Crossed and Targets. Little duplex. Memorial Day weekend. I'd be shocked if you remember this interaction, but I was this tall, blonde, skinny guy that talked to you for a few minutes after the show. I told how I had been a Caedmon's fan back in the day and followed your early career, but eventually lost touch for no particular reason. Years later, and just as inexplicably, you suddenly popped into my head one day. I discovered the Fingers Crossed album just as my own faith had come toppling down. I think quipped something about how "Stop Listening" was when I started listening again. It was also just weeks before that house show in my home town (or metroplex, anyway). Of course I had to go. It was one of those weird moments of synchronicity in life; something being in just the right place at just the right time. Fast forward to about a year ago. I didn't catch wind of this video immediately upon release. I was spiraling into a really bad place at the time to the point of checking myself into PHP + IOP for a while. I worked through a lot of stuff. It was all going to be okay. And then literally the day before discharge I had a long conversation with my best friend and stumbled into the second giant existential crisis of my life. CRACK. This one might be even worse than the first. Oh shit. Oh shit shit shit shit shit. I think I might be trans. I mean, there were signs. No one but me could have seen them, but big neon ones. How did I not see this? This can't be happening.... A few weeks later (about 10 months ago) I saw this video and I was... shook. Again. Synchronicity. "Teapots happen" (google that; you won't be disappointed). It's the kind of thing I might have attributed to God working in mysterious ways if that weren't so deeply ironic now. Who knows? Maybe He does. Whatever the reason, I just can't seem to escape from Derek's web. Your guess is as good as mine as to who is stuck to whom. The video might be most directly about drag, but the song speaks to a broader subject than that. It's been in my background for the last 10 months as I ran screaming from this thing in every direction I could think of until I tired myself out and accepted what I really knew from the start. A lot of changes and shifts happened in my life and I left the church and its bigotry. After all this time I can still connect deeply to your music. Yes, Jesus went after the sinners and the outcast, not the proud Pharisees but his goal was always salvation, freedom, healing and departing from sin and power over sin. Hence, "Go and sin no more." My heart goes out to all the women who had to watch you putting on a caricature of them and imagining, pretending, lying to yourself that it's compassion instead of mockery. It's a new blackface era, just for different reasons. Jesus would not approve of your appropriating his message of compassion for this twisted idolization of the Self over Him. If God knew us in our mother's womb and gave us our bodies, why do we have to chop off perfectly healthy, wonderful parts to become the version of ourselves we desire? It is because we covet not only our neighbor's wife... but our neighbor's wife's _body._ The entire idea of Transgenderism is envy, ingratitude to our Maker, and idolatry, and it is wholly un-Christian. We are called to love Trans people, just as we are called to love Muslims, Atheists, and everyone else who does not believe as we do. But we are _not_ called to believe their untruths, no matter how strongly they believe them, and no matter what persecuting names for us (like transphobe or TERF) and harmful threats they make (like social rejection or even suicide) if we do not obey them instead of God. We show love to them by sharing the Gospel, that Jesus died for their sins and loves and forgives them, no matter what. But no one can receive forgiveness if they reject it because they do not believe they need it. And trans people do not believe they need it. They are lost and need a guide, not someone to get lost with them. Derek, you can love them without supporting their idolatry. Fight for their rights in this free country to live out their earthly lives as peacefully as they can. Allow children to grow as God made them and then decide, as adults, whether they want to follow the truth or give into lies, like the father of the prodigal son. Christians can and should be willing to let people go in compassion without bullying them or terrorizing them for not following the faith. I left the world of Christian music when I left the church in the early 2000s. I was walking by someone in town awhile back, and heard this song playing, and I KNEW I knew that voice from Caedmon's Call. It took some sleuthing to find this song, and it's been in my head ever since. Ultimately because God decreed that he would. In the story, I believe it was his understanding of God's sovereignty and the weight of his own pride. I think a failed marriage may have been tangled up with his identity. If so, I get it. Even so, these are only my guesses. Only Derek really knows.
Back in the early 2000s in my early college days I had a friend in church who is no longer a friend bc of a falling out with a mutual friend and I was cast aside. That friend at the time was becoming a musical mentor and as we both struggled with musicianship within the chruch he gave me a CD with your music. He basically described it as actually musically profound and deeper than that trite mess of the church world music. As soon as I listened to it I felt the same presence that brought me to music and creativity, what I then called god but now consider bigger, I felt a deep life force that broke through the masking I was forced to do in childhood to keep myself alive... It broke through the fear to be myself. It helped me birth the real me, the creative me that echoes who I called god then. I couldn't stop creating. I couldn't stop writing music and I became beyond thirsty. Christianity kept that part of myself bound and hurting in shame. Countless Christians told me music was an idol, the only place I felt god's presence was an "idol" according to them, but every time I remember who I truly am I remember your music and a few other musicians now too but yours truly hit me hard and close to the soul. I haven't heard any of it for years for fear that I might have idealized the time or the messages or the feeling and because I had no access to it when I lost that friend. Hearing this today just breaks me and the sound of your voice took me back to that warmth. I'm no longer a Christian. I don't know if I ever was a Christian as I was always an outcast and a scapegoat. What I used to call god I now call the universe, the creator, life, love, light... Basically, as the Bible described it, all that is "good." All that to say, thank you for sharing your voice and your light. My business, SabiLewSounds wouldn't exist without it. My music and my soul would probably be long dead and buried without it and with it the real Sabi who is still fighting to be found. Keep in mind that people will fail us. I'm sure I've failed all over the place. When I lost my wife, an amazing woman who always put others first... people came around for my daughter, for me. For about three days. Then we became pariahs. Sometimes I think people freak out, think a fantastic lady dying of ovarian cancer will... get on them? Or mess with *their* faith. It's been just over seven years now. Not feeling hurt, forgotten has been hard. But when I let myself feel bitter as I struggle to keep a roof over our heads, even through an Olympic size swimming pool of depression... I remember that God has not changed and God can't fail us. I also know it's helpful to me to get out of my head and help others. Its not much, but it's better than giving up.

I loved Caedmon's Call as a young adult. Now i just don't understand why an atheist is singing about what Jesus said and did and what i should believe? I've grown in my relationship with Jesus and believe more than ever that all the Bible is God's Word. And what Derek sings about now is a contradiction to it. I used to listen a lot to Webb when I was a Christian. Years and a long honest road later, I’m no longer a believer. But I happened to think of his music and wanted to check back in to see if he was still creating. I’m happy to have found this channel. I definitely felt the “spirit” when I saw him in concert. I can still feel it today. But that spirit is in my own consciousness.

I'm having a hard time expressing my feelings about it, but I guess I'll say that if I had been raised in the type of Christianity you are singing about, I would probably still be a Christian today. A God that is mature and secure enough in his own identity would have no need to be frightened of our identities, or of our questions, or of our faithlessness. He would not need to rely on petty threats to keep us in line and he would certainly not require us to defend his honor so fiercely or, in Bono's words, "help him across the street like a little old lady." A God that can't live up to 1 Corinthians 13 is a God worthy of my atheism.

as a queer person who grew up listening to your music, seeing/watching the music you make now, especially songs like this one where it's not only about us but includes us, feel very healing. A decade out, I still want nothing to do with the Church, but it's nice to be able to revisit pieces of that time with more joy. Derek, I don't know you but so moved by this beautiful song and video. It means so much for a cisgender, white male to create this kind of art that honors the personhood of all people. The root of the word spirit is 'breath' or just life. Yet the CDC Youth Survey released in February 2023 showed that more than half (52%) of LGBTQ+ students had recently experienced poor mental health and, concerningly, that more than 1 in 5 (22%) attempted suicide in the past year. Suicide risk is even higher in the trans community. Art like this gives hope to people that feel so rejected by their families and by society, and helps them choose life every day. That seems to me as spiritual as you can get.

So here’s the hilarious part - today’s Western men are dressed in female clothing … and men used to wear makeup. The Apostle Paul would likely look more like Flamy. As someone who was greatly impacted by Derek Webb and Caedmon’s Call all through my teen and college years, I’m heart broken by this.. among other things, did he just say f***? Where have we gone? We love all who are in our lives without “celebrating” sin. When did sin become our identity? Those who have accepted Christ have Him as our identity, not our flesh, not our bodies, not our old selves, not our sin. We are all sinners. Christ has redeemed and replaced our identity with Himself. He didn’t celebrate our death, He conquered it.
The narrow way is not unloving. It’s eternal salvation. We are ALL invited. But we are all asked to shed the former self.
I’m heartbroken. How our Christian leaders have gone down a different path. Maybe the path of celebrity was never going to end well for so many. There's a huge difference between accepting and loving a person who sins, since we are ALL sinners, and condoning and accepting the actual sin. Narrow is the way to God. He is a loving, merciful and just God... and is very clear about what he will be judging. It is more loving to call out a person living in sin and on the road to destruction than it is to condone and embrace that sin.

I've been meaning to write this comment for months, but let's just say I've been a little preoccupied. It's a bit of a novel, but bear with me; there's a payoff at the end.
I was at the house show you did in Dallas in 2019 (I think), between the release of Fingers Crossed and Targets. Little duplex. Memorial Day weekend. I'd be shocked if you remember this interaction, but I was this tall, blonde, skinny guy that talked to you for a few minutes after the show.
I told how I had been a Caedmon's fan back in the day and followed your early career, but eventually lost touch for no particular reason. Years later, and just as inexplicably, you suddenly popped into my head one day. I discovered the Fingers Crossed album just as my own faith had come toppling down. I think quipped something about how "Stop Listening" was when I started listening again. It was also just weeks before that house show in my home town (or metroplex, anyway). Of course I had to go. It was one of those weird moments of synchronicity in life; something being in just the right place at just the right time.
Fast forward to about a year ago. I didn't catch wind of this video immediately upon release. I was spiraling into a really bad place at the time to the point of checking myself into PHP + IOP for a while. I worked through a lot of stuff. It was all going to be okay. And then literally the day before discharge I had a long conversation with my best friend and stumbled into the second giant existential crisis of my life. CRACK. This one might be even worse than the first. Oh shit. Oh shit shit shit shit shit. I think I might be trans. I mean, there were signs. No one but me could have seen them, but big neon ones. How did I not see this? This can't be happening....
A few weeks later (about 10 months ago) I saw this video and I was... shook. Again. Synchronicity. "Teapots happen" (google that; you won't be disappointed). It's the kind of thing I might have attributed to God working in mysterious ways if that weren't so deeply ironic now. Who knows? Maybe He does. Whatever the reason, I just can't seem to escape from Derek's web. Your guess is as good as mine as to who is stuck to whom.
The video might be most directly about drag, but the song speaks to a broader subject than that. It's been in my background for the last 10 months as I ran screaming from this thing in every direction I could think of until I tired myself out and accepted what I really knew from the start. It turns out you can't run from yourself. Thank you for making this.

One last thought:
I've "doomscrolled" through the comments long enough that I think it's almost wrapped around to a form of comedy. You get this sort of thing on your other videos, of course, but not like this one. And gee, man, I don't know...I'm starting to get the feeling that maybe a whole bunch of these people didn't give a flying fuck who you were, what you're about, or what you said until it was about gender. You put on _one_ little dress and suddenly you're a menace to society. "Little angry men," indeed.
You respond to all the kind and positive messages, or even just someone asking for lyrics, so I know you have to be parsing all of this. For a _year_. That's genuinely impressive. I usually feel like social media should do more to clamp down on the rampant hate speech and vitriol leveled at minorities on their platform, but this is different. This needs to be seen. It's an inkblot. Whether you're disgusted by what's above the fold or below it speaks volumes if you can grasp the most basic biblical wisdom of all: "by their fruits, you will know them". Thanks for taking some stones.

I have felt a strong connection to your music since the early 2000's when I was in highschool and heavily involved in my church. A lot of changes and shifts happened in my life and I left the church and its bigotry. After all this time I can still connect deeply to your music. when you deconstruct the faith what you find is a person who picks and chooses what to believe and not believe. Yes, Jesus went after the sinners and the outcast, not the proud Pharisees but his goal was always salvation, freedom, healing and departing from sin and power over sin. Hence, "Go and sin no more." We are called to love Trans people, just as we are called to love Muslims, Atheists, and everyone else who does not believe as we do. But we are _not_ called to believe their untruths, no matter how strongly they believe them, and no matter what persecuting names for us (like transphobe or TERF) and harmful threats they make (like social rejection or even suicide) if we do not obey them instead of God. We show love to them by sharing the Gospel, that Jesus died for their sins and loves and forgives them, no matter what. But no one can receive forgiveness if they reject it because they do not believe they need it. And trans people do not believe they need it. They are lost and need a guide, not someone to get lost with them.
Derek, you can love them without supporting their idolatry. Fight for their rights in this free country to live out their earthly lives as peacefully as they can. Allow children to grow as God made them and then decide, as adults, whether they want to follow the truth or give into lies, like the father of the prodigal son. Christians can and should be willing to let people go in compassion without bullying them or terrorizing them for not following the faith. But my heart breaks to see Christians instead fall under the sway of the golden calf, being told "This (the self) is God!" and sharing the false message of Aaron to a world that needs the true one of Moses and Jesus.

I first heard Caedmon's Call in '96-'97 when I was a kid and you've always been a good one, Derek. From the few times that we've met after shows to the interactions online and all of your music, videos, podcasts, etc. Thanks for continuing to be inclusive in the face of hatred and criticism from your 'siblings in Christ'. I left the church a long time ago and likely won't be back, but it makes me glad that there are folks like you and Flamy Grant who still participate and try to change hardened hearts and closed minds.

Ultimately because God decreed that he would. In the story, I believe it was his understanding of God's sovereignty and the weight of his own pride.
I think a failed marriage may have been tangled up with his identity.
If so, I get it.
Even so, these are only my guesses.
Only Derek really knows.
Back in the early 2000s in my early college days I had a friend in church who is no longer a friend bc of a falling out with a mutual friend and I was cast aside. That friend at the time was becoming a musical mentor and as we both struggled with musicianship within the chruch he gave me a CD with your music. He basically described it as actually musically profound and deeper than that trite mess of the church world music. As soon as I listened to it I felt the same presence that brought me to music and creativity, what I then called god but now consider bigger, I felt a deep life force that broke through the masking I was forced to do in childhood to keep myself alive... It broke through the fear to be myself. It helped me birth the real me, the creative me that echoes who I called god then. I couldn't stop creating. I couldn't stop writing music and I became beyond thirsty. Christianity kept that part of myself bound and hurting in shame. Countless Christians told me music was an idol, the only place I felt god's presence was an "idol" according to them, but every time I remember who I truly am I remember your music and a few other musicians now too but yours truly hit me hard and close to the soul. I haven't heard any of it for years for fear that I might have idealized the time or the messages or the feeling and because I had no access to it when I lost that friend.
Hearing this today just breaks me and the sound of your voice took me back to that warmth.
I'm no longer a Christian. I don't know if I ever was a Christian as I was always an outcast and a scapegoat.
What I used to call god I now call the universe, the creator, life, love, light... Basically, as the Bible described it, all that is "good."
All that to say, thank you for sharing your voice and your light. My business, SabiLewSounds wouldn't exist without it. My music and my soul would probably be long dead and buried without it and with it the real Sabi who is still fighting to be found. This song is beautiful and I am just an ally to the LGBTQ+ community. I hope it helps them from all the hate in this world.

Keep in mind that people will fail us. I'm sure I've failed all over the place. When I lost my wife, an amazing woman who always put others first... people came around for my daughter, for me. For about three days. Then we became pariahs. Sometimes I think people freak out, think a fantastic lady dying of ovarian cancer will... get on them? Or mess with *their* faith. It's been just over seven years now. Not feeling hurt, forgotten has been hard. But when I let myself feel bitter as I struggle to keep a roof over our heads, even through an Olympic size swimming pool of depression... I remember that God has not changed and God can't fail us. I also know it's helpful to me to get out of my head and help others. Its not much, but it's better than giving up.

I loved Caedmon's Call as a young adult. Now i just don't understand why an atheist is singing about what Jesus said and did and what i should believe? I've grown in my relationship with Jesus and believe more than ever that all the Bible is God's Word. And what Derek sings about now is a contradiction to it. But i will always love his voice and playing. I just miss worshipping with him.

How is Christian love cruel? They are showing you the right way. People say they were born that way, well they need to be born again, God loves His children and wants them to stop doing the things of the world and follow Him and His ways. The world has nothing but temporary fillings for your desires, surrender fully to God and turn from your ways and He will sustain you.

I used to listen a lot to Webb when I was a Christian. Years and a long honest road later, I’m no longer a believer. But I happened to think of his music and wanted to check back in to see if he was still creating. I’m happy to have found this channel. I definitely felt the “spirit” when I saw him in concert. I can still feel it today. But that spirit is in my own consciousness.

After listening to the song the second time and getting teary-eyed, I realize that it also makes my heart happy to know that if you are living a life characterized by love, then that means other Christians are doing the same. It's hard to remember sometimes that Christianity is not a religion of hate and right-wing politics.
Thought I'd respond one more time after sitting down and listening to the whole album and pondering your words. It is a fantastic album! I'm having a hard time expressing my feelings about it, but I guess I'll say that if I had been raised in the type of Christianity you are singing about, I would probably still be a Christian today. A God that is mature and secure enough in his own identity would have no need to be frightened of our identities, or of our questions, or of our faithlessness. He would not need to rely on petty threats to keep us in line and he would certainly not require us to defend his honor so fiercely or, in Bono's words, "help him across the street like a little old lady." A God that can't live up to 1 Corinthians 13 is a God worthy of my atheism.

Derek, I don't know you but so moved by this beautiful song and video. It means so much for a cisgender, white male to create this kind of art that honors the personhood of all people. The root of the word spirit is 'breath' or just life. Yet the CDC Youth Survey released in February 2023 showed that more than half (52%) of LGBTQ+ students had recently experienced poor mental health and, concerningly, that more than 1 in 5 (22%) attempted suicide in the past year. Suicide risk is even higher in the trans community. Art like this gives hope to people that feel so rejected by their families and by society, and helps them choose life every day. That seems to me as spiritual as you can get.
