    It’s very common that the TTC, i.e. the Buses, subways, streetcars experience delays. In this video, I will show you how to use apps to save time and avoid long waiting times.
    IMPORTANT UPDATE: Since Rocketman has shut down, use the 'transit app instead. I made a video about how to use it a while ago: ' • How to use the TRANSIT...

    Other tips:
    Exit at the back door.
    Keep phone conversations short and quiet.
    Take your backpack off when you board.
    Don't crowd the front of the bus, move to the back and try to find a seat.

    Google Maps has improved so much over the years. I still remember the days when I’d say I want to go from Scarborough to downtown Toronto and it would tell me to take the GO train and how some addresses would be off by two or three blocks 😅

      PS: I don’t use auto reload, I feel it’s too dangerous. If your chequing account is low auto reload can easily go into overdraft and you’d end up paying a lot extra. TTC now shows how much is left on your Presto card so I see no reason to use auto reload any more.

      lol!

    • @LivinginCanada
      @LivinginCanada  Рік тому +3

      That won't happen as long as you set a low enough limit. E.g. if you set a threshold of $20 with autoreload of $20, your card will only get charged a maximum of $20 once your presto balance drops to $20. Also, I attach my credit card (instead of debit) to my presto account, so unless I'm close to my credit limit (which I never am), there's never a problem.

      Different people can use the same Presto card, but not at the same time. So if you travel together, each of you would need to get one. If you’re only traveling for 5 days you can also consider buying single ride fares.

      It's best to use a Presto card, that way you just tap each time you board, and the machine will calculate the fare automatically (including applying the free 2-hour transfer). If you buy a physical ticket, you need to stamp when you transfer from one station to another. I have not done this myself though.

    Hello. Very useful video. I’ve been in Toronto for a week now and my question might seem dumb but I’m still having trouble figuring out in which direction to take the subway or street car. I can’t seem to find in anywhere on streetcars stops or bus stops. And in the subway it usually only say southbound and northbound which I find confusing. Do you have a tip ?

    • @LivinginCanada
      @LivinginCanada  Рік тому +1

      Thanks, glad to hear that! It's easiest to orient yourself by finding out what the last stops of a route is, and match that with the direction displayed on the subway/bus/streetcar. I would start with the route you take most frequently. E.g. subway line 2: Go to ttc.ca to get the map so you can see the stations along line 2. Westbound would go toward Kipling, while Eastbound would go toward Kennedy. It's the same for buses, e.g. "Humber loop" displayed on Bus 80 means it goes west. I hope I answered your question!

    Thank you! I'm visiting Toronto for the first time from New York and any new public transportation system confuses me, so I gotta do some research first. I was hoping there's a way to just use our credit cards directly like the OMNY here in NY. I'll be in the city for 6 nights so perhaps, getting the Presto card is a decent option. Plus, it's a good souvenir too I guess lol

    • @LivinginCanada
      @LivinginCanada  Рік тому +1

      Unfortunately that's not possible yet (on the TTC), so yes you'd need to get Presto. I actually prefer using presto rather than my credit card. Imagine how many times you take out your card everyday (especially if you're here longer!) and the card could easily get lost. On the other hand, if I lose the presto card (and registered it), I still keep the balance. Yes about the souvenir haha!

      Can presto card be use for both bus travel and at the subway too? I heard that there is a special plan for students where we have to pay 120-130 CAD per month through which we can travel Toronto without any limits. So this includes both bus and subway, right?

    • @ahurafarahani7751
      @ahurafarahani7751 2 роки тому +2

      @@jugalpatel276 Yes that is what a presto card is for. If you are talking about a TTC bus then all you do is tap once and go on your way and you do not need to tap again until you leave the TTC system. If you are talking about YRT and GO transit a presto card also works except those systems will deduct their own fares. YRT 3.03 for youth/students under 18 and GO depends on where you are going though typically under 3 bucks. As for the monthly pass I think for students it is 119 dollars but you need to go to bathurst subway station to get your student ID I think but I would recommend you just pay with regular presto card instead of buying a monthly pass as unless you are going everyday 2 to 3 times a day you probably won't be getting your moneys worth also don't forget by tapping your presto card you are getting a 2 hour free transfer period based on the system you tap on (besides GO transit) where you can go out of the system and lets say go to a coffee shop or the way I use it go to a mall and tap on quickly so I can ride to and from all for the same 2.25$

      @@berniekatzroy If you are an adult (19 and above) and you have access to a credit card then no because you can pay Presto price without paying for a Presto card (be wary of international charges though) or if you have an Android then starting Tuesday, November 21st, 2023 you can put a presto card for free in google wallet (sadly not on IOS unfortunately. Even if you do not have a credit card or are not an adult just buying tickets or using coins is much better because, for a presto card, you need to actually use transit often to cover the initial 4$ cost. PS if you get on buses or even at subway station if you stop the presto fare $3.30 in a variety of coins and just a toonie, loonie, and a couple coins then the driver will give you a ticket but the rule is that a driver cannot tell you anything on a bus if you do not pay. If you have more questions or need me to clear anything up please feel free to DM me here :)

    Thanks for the video. If I understand correctly, we can transfer from subway to streetcar or subway to subway without paying a 2nd fare if we’re in the 2-hour transfer window? Can I also use it for return trip if I do not exceed the time frame? Thanks!

    • @LivinginCanada
      @LivinginCanada  2 роки тому +3

      Yes, that's right! All that matters is that your last tap doesn't exceed 2 hours since your first tap (note the exact time). Just one second over and you'll have to pay a second fare! In between you can do as many trips as you want.

      Additionally, if I have understood right, that if we are transiting from TTC to Subway or vice versa, within the 2-hour window, is it required to tap again to open up pathway for subway or the bus entry?? And even if we do so, the money will not be deducted since it's within the window?

      I've actually never purchased a single fare, but you can buy it either on the bus or from the fare vending machine. I have a question regarding the 2-hour timeframe, if for example you take the streetcar then need to take the bus. Do you need to tap twice? If so are you deducted $6.50 for tapping twice? Or just $3.25 due to the two hour time frame? Another example would be going to and back from a stop. Say you go to duffering st for just 30min, can you go back the same way and not be charged twice?

    • @LivinginCanada
      @LivinginCanada  2 роки тому +8

      About the first question: Yes, you need to tap every time you change from-to subway/bus/streetcar of the TTC, that way the system can keep track whether or not you're still within that 2-hr window, but you'll only pay that one fare. As long as it's within that timeframe it won't deduct twice. But once you go just a second above that 2-hrs you'll be charge again, so I'd recommend to take note of when you first tapped on. About the second question: The 2-hr time frame is counted from the moment you first tapped. In the meantime you can take any route, it doesn't matter, you'll only be charged once. Hope that helps!
