Just lovely-having my recurrent training in 2 days this helps out a lot. Many of us are grounded, sent home or don't even work for a company anymore like I do. I haven't flown a 737 for over a year now and I am glad some folks help us out online. Well done and thank you!
Great tutorial as always, its interesting to see the minor differences of sop’s between companies :). We normally use vnav on takeoff (we have 10.8 on our fleet) and set the EO Accel Height, at 400ft call for bank angle 15 (in case we need to follow a specific seop routing), hdg select and engine severe damage qrc checklist (which contains the memory items you mentioned plus some others) and we can also engage autopilot if stabilized at 400ft, after v2+15 we call for bank angle 25, after completing qrc checklist we declare emergency not pan pan. At level off we retract flaps on schedule, set max cont thrust, level chg to msa or as required in the seop and continue the checklist which redirects from qrc to qrh. Once we get to the deferred items we call for the after takeoff checklist and prepare the return to the airport.
Hi Manuel Z Interesting to hear and thanks for sharing! Loads of different operators use slightly different methods to get the same job done. Training pilots from other airlines, they often query why is it different from where they’ve come from! I just have to teach them the way it’s done here! FD2S
Thank you sir for another excellent tutorial. Always a pleasure to watch. Love the randomly appearing photos. Had to smile when Cruise put on his sunglasses after touchdown.
Excellent work! I was just wondering if anyone would do one of these abnormal handlings in a sim this morning and here I am appreciating the fine work of yours. I am from Asia and the only difference in our procedures compares to yours is that we have to declare a MAYDAY if we lost half of our engines. Really good management of the workload and handling of the aircraft! Learned a lot!
Well, I requested a one engine failure/bird strike video during your recent live feed and you said you were already planning the V1 cut and what a lesson you've taught us. I'm going to be re-viewing this video a lot. Brilliant stuff, many thanks. The only time I suffered a failure like this, was a bird strike in X-Plane 10 a couple of years ago. At the time I thought..."What do I do now" lol. For some reason the flock of birds seems to have disappeared in X-Plane 11. I might just have to pull the engine cut off lever on engine 2 and see what that does for me. Keep the videos coming please. Great stuff to watch.
Hi Philip! Yes working through 100’s of requested videos! I used the NGX as it had a really useful failure implementation system, I haven’t tried on XP11 yet! All the best! FD2S
A brilliant study level aircraft which I have used for many years! You should give ZIBO’s mod a try though! It’s my favourite aircraft in the virtual hanger! FD2S
Great video and really nice explantion! I have produced the same from a Full Flight simulator on my channel. I love how clear the displays are. An interesting discussion point is that with seizure you may not get the airframe vibration, which you don't in many Full Flight simulators. So most copanies use airmanship and as you say, with 0 N1 and or 0 N2 this is likely to be a severe damage. Interesting that the PMDG does not have the auto pop up feature of the lower DU. The secondary instruments should have appeared without selection, unless you use the compact display. Keep up the great work! Really enjoying your videos!
Thank you. Excellent commentary and instructing. I agree about X Plane 11. Their application of “wing blade theory” is what makes their simulation more realistic. By the way..did you do the after takeoff checklist? I must have missed it. You handled the work load with precision despite no co Pilot and made it look too easy! Your NOTECH skills are commendable!
Thanks for a well-done presentation. Since you would be limited to 15 degree bank angle in case of a go-around, would you select that limit on the MCP once established on final?
Very nice video and explanation. I just miss one important thing in this episode, after the right engine separation your Hydraulics are gone on the right side, which means several equipment are not working anymore which is omitted in your flight back. Cheers!
Hi Erwin, glad you like the video! In this situation this was not an engine separation, this indicates the whole engine has fallen off! Secondly all systems are still Hydraulically powered as we’ve only lost the engine driven hydraulic pump, the electric hydraulic pump is still available 👍🏼 FD2S
Hi flyhalf2, Although a Mayday (emergency) call could’ve been made this is more for distress and imminent danger to either the aircraft or other traffic. (Eg Rapid Depressurisation, Fire, Pilot incapacitation) Depending on several factors a PAN call (urgency) should be sufficient with a controlled engine failure Both can be upgraded or downgraded and cancelled at any time FD2S
Hi Rishav, the aircraft can be flown without HYD A and B but the primary controls (except rudder which can be controlled by the SBY HYD systems) become very heavy. Pitch and Roll requires a significant physical input to control the aircraft, it's hard work but still controllable. FD2S
Brilliant. Browsing through your tutorials independently of chronological posting, all of them highly interesting and useful. Could you tell me where I can be told which (sim)gear you use, or remind me your config? Thanks a lot anyway. Phil
Thanks (Luck!) The NGX is a great product with accurate systems replicated and I would still recommend it! X- Plane utilises a superior flight model and things such as ground effect, the inputs I make with the ZIBO MOD are comparative to what I'd make with the control column on the real aircraft. The NGX and all aircraft in P3D/FSX feel a little artificial, aircraft do tend to float considerably. Also turbulence/wind is massively dampened hence my move to XP11! It feels much more realistic FD2S
Another great tutorial! I have camera shakes on in my ezdok but it seems far too exaggerated. Do you have camera shakes on? Or would you recommend them off?
Thank you for making these realistic videos. This emergency engine failure seemed to be pretty routine., Could you make a engine or maybe an rapid decompression video where you have to put the wheels down asap. ie the recent Southwest engine blowout and damage to the fuselage.
Great suggestion! If I look at engine failures again I'll look into incorporating a camera for the rudder. I did this for my take off and crosswind landing tutorial FD2S
hi, a very good tutorial you hv on efato indeed. May i request one tutorial on engine failure in cruise together with usage of rudder and rudder trim for all phases of flight (i.e how to counter yawing from the moment engine failed to rudder requirement while using level change on descent (either zero the rudder or light press on the opposite one, and anticipation on neutralizing rudder on final aproach before landing including on crosswind condition) thank you
Hello, really nice Video ! But one Question i have is .. i see in the QRH you should turn on the "Left" Pack Switch. ( min 20:44 in the video ) But what if you have a "Left" Engine failure ( not right engine ) ?? Thanks Matthias
Great video. Been a few years since I last operated the 737 but certainly recognise LGW and the landing performance calculation you used. If one wants to get a sim, which would you recommend
Hi Paul! MSFS and XP11 both have their pros and cons and I still love using both sims. 737 wise, the PMDG in MSFS is superb for a launch version albeit needing some fine tuning. MSFS is “far more advanced” visually but XP11 still holds its own and aircraft handle in a more realistic manner. You should try both! FD2S
Very informative video! The maximum holding speed in the US is 200 knots while below 6000 ft. I am not sure if this is applicable in the UK (since I assume UK follows ICAO convention for holding speeds). But whatever the restrictions, they are applicable in this situation as well (as long it is safe to adhere to), right?
Hi! I have a question. I've seen that on another aircraft (both airbus aircraft and other boient aircraft such as 747, 777 or 787) the autothrottle is not disengaged on an engine failure, and i wonder why the 737 is the only one on which the authothrottle is deactivated. Thank you!
Hi dear Captain! Another great tutorial as usual! Thank you for your efforts! Let me ask you a curiosity: Which 737 do you prefer? The PMDG or the Zibo one? And why? Greetings from Italy!
Hi Yoke, Rudder and Crosswinds! Take a look at my first ZIBO tutorial at the pinned comment for my thoughts comparing the two! ua-cam.com/video/ZiGAipxKIUU/v-deo.html The NGX is a study level aircraft with pretty much every system accurately replicated. I’ve now been providing regular feedback to ZIBO as have several other 737 line pilots, the FM is being developed by twkster who has years of airline experience and it’s now a solid platform and is my preferred choice. It also utilises the superior flight model provided by XP 11. For me ZIBO’s MOD is one of the best handling 737 sims you can get. FD2S
This is nice to watch. Very informational and interesting. Just curious if you have any website or if you have a list where I can use to set up flight simulator at home using Microsoft flight simulator and Oculus. I'd also plan to buy proper gears to simulate flight like rudders, etc. Just thought I ask.
Hi Gary, thanks! In the NGX in the FMC when you push MENU you can find failures. The NGX has a robust failure implementation system which I’ve used for many years! FD2S
Very nice video, I have a question though : Why is the engine start switch on continuous for the inoperative engine? Shouldn't it be on the OFF or Auto position?
engine faulire: 400 hundred hdg select, apu start, bank angle 15 inform atc identified problem 800 hundred ft speed 210, flaps up: level change, max cont thrust flaps up speed, bank angle 25 autopilot engage, engine failure or shutdown checklist, after take off checklist.
Hi Nerf My Age, If you were unable to contact the controller due to R/T congestion we would use 121.5 and then squawk 7700 otherwise we would leave our assigned squawk. ATC might ask us to set 7700 so we are are highlighted to other controllers that we are in an urgency/distress situation. FD2S
Another great video. Very informative. Is single channel ILS literally just that you have a single AP engaged and you'll have to manually land apposed to an autoland/CATIII with both APs engaged?
How do you adjust rudder trim in the sim?I remember in the 737 simulators I w ould have the PM a djust the trim into the good engine after a V1 cut to abour 5-6 units.
I've been told by someone in a stream that they showed a real pilot the PMDG 777, and he responded saying that "it's all bullshit". The person declined to further explain what exactly was "bullshit", but I am curious about your thoughts
Do you ever put any altitudes in the FMC descent page for TAI ON/OFF, if you are expecting the use of engine anti-ice on a descent? From what I know, the engine anti-ice system increases the idle thrust, and thus it modifies a little the optimum descent profile. And if it modifies it, it is that significant? Thank you.
Hi Ovidiu I haven't really used it unless I anticipate using TAI throughout the entire descent, you usually end up turning it on and off during a typical descent in Europe through all the gnarly weather. I've never considered how this will affect my descent profile. It does make a small difference to your descent of course but it's negligible compared to say a speed change from ATC or a massive shortcut! FD2S
I notice that you turned into the operating engine during the hold. Did you intentionally avoid turning into the dead engine, or were you simply following the standard holding instructions?
In a light twin or turboprop, if I remember rightly, avoid holding and turning towards the dead engine. There is no limitation I know of in the 737 👍🏼 FD2S
Something I've always wondered, what is it like to get sim time as an actual pilot? Does your company have time slots in the simulator that you can sign up for to just try things as you want, or do you have to wait for pre-scheduled simulator schedule times the company assigns to practice set events? I've always wanted to find someplace near me with a 737 simulator that offered flights, but the nearest I've found is all the way on the West Coast in LA.
Hi Aaron! Every 6 months you must go in the full motion Sim for your check The company I work for also have fixed base training devices (FNPT Trainers) which can be booked and used by crew. They have a fully enclosed 737 flight deck where several scenarios can be practiced FD2S
A really good question Mehmet Zeki Demirdelen! I was always under the impression it was to prevent contamination of the air conditioning system. Asking around and doing some research I’ve had mixed answers I was directed to this post online with mixed answers from pilots. www.pprune.org/tech-log/526571-737ng-oei-landing-checklist-additional-ga-thrust-required.html Put this way, if the engine fire was still illuminated by this point I’d be on the ground by now!!! FD2S
Hey Captain, that was a nice video. I just want to know how could you put the inoperative engine to idle separetly? In my sim when i set thrust off all throttles goes down. Thanks in advance.
An amazing tutorial Captain! When an engine failure like this occurs in real life, what happens to the aircraft after landing? Is the operative engine fully replaced due to the additional load it had to support? Hope FD2S is the operator on my next trip 🙂 Thank you!! P.S. The Maverick signature was awesome 😎
Hi Massimo, The aircraft would need to be thoroughly inspected before being released back to service and obviously the damaged engine would be replaced. The operative engine should be fine as the thrust you need to set should be well within the operating limits. FD2S
Brilliant, very interesting and my weekend just started very well, now if Liverpool can win tomorrow, very happy days indeed! thanks very much regards Gareth
G'day. Again an excellent tutorial (even though it wasn't Zibo :) I assume you couldn't do a fuel dump to lighten the A/C because you were over a built up area. Can't have the locals walking around with their umbrellas up when it's raining avgas.
Hi Richard, thanks! ZIBO coming back for the next few tutorials. 737 has no fuel dumping feature. When advised by the QRH to “Land at the nearest Suitable Airport” you can land above Max Landing Weight. FD2S
Thanks for clearing that up. I just checked on line and much to my surprise I see that there are quite a number of Boeing A/C that don't have fuel dump capability :- www.boeing.com/assets/pdf/commercial/airports/faqs/fueldump.pdf Some wag created an add on for the FSX PMDG NGX which would allow a fuel dump & I used it a couple of times during a simulated engine failure. My mistake for not checking the facts......."The facts man.....check the facts" :) There is a UA-cam video where the crew had to dump fuel after some problem shortly after departure from Zurich airport (Airbus A340). They were directed by ATC over to some forested area to do the dump before returning to LSZH. A good example of engine shutdown procedure :- ua-cam.com/video/rEf35NtlBLg/v-deo.html
Hi Joe, Although a Mayday (emergency) call could’ve been made this is more for distress and imminent danger to either the aircraft, life or other traffic. (Eg Rapid Depressurisation, Fire, Pilot incapacitation) For us, following the ICAO definition for a PAN call, “it represents an urgent situation, which for the time being at least, does not pose an immediate danger to anyone's life or to the aircraft itself” A contained engine failure can be easily managed by a competent line crew, so a Pan (urgency) call is enough. Both can be upgraded/downgraded or cancelled at any time FD2S
capt! thanks for this channel you are the best! I always learn with yor tutorials! keep it as long as you can! So do the 737s only have like a 2axis autopilot? Or is it just a bit “slower reacting” to the asymmetric thrust than the airbus?
Hi dear Captain! Another great tutorial as usual! Thank you for your efforts! Let me ask you a curiosity:
Which 737 do you prefer?

If you were unable to contact the controller due to R/T congestion we would use 121.5 and then squawk 7700 otherwise we would leave our assigned squawk. ATC might ask us to set 7700 so we are are highlighted to other controllers that we are in an urgency/distress situation.

Thank you for always fun video ✈️!!
I want ask you my PMDG 737 is production year is 2011 How I update to new PMDG please help me!!!
Another great video. Very informative. Is single channel ILS literally just that you have a single AP engaged and you'll have to manually land apposed to an autoland/CATIII with both APs engaged?
Hi namboozleUK, thanks!
Yes, that is correct.
FD2S
Awesome video with fantastic tutorial :"D
Thanks a lot!

How do you adjust rudder trim in the sim?I remember in the 737 simulators I w
ould have the PM a
djust the trim into the good engine after a V1
cut to abour 5-6 units.
I've been told by someone in a stream that they showed a real pilot the PMDG 777, and he responded saying that "it's all bullshit". The person declined to further explain what exactly was "bullshit", but I am curious about your thoughts
Will you be moving over to the new Microsoft flight simulator?
i fucking love the sprinkle of memes you put in your videos XDD
I have a dedicated “meme” folder which is forever being utilised! 😂
FD2S
bahahaha its great, quality stuff man
My heading set maximum "30". How do I fix the disorder?
hello, i'm 15 and want to be a commercial or cargo pilot, how did you train to become a pilot and what did you do? many thanks
I can't wait for the PMDG 737 in MSFS 2020, it should have a much more realistic flight model.
Thank you.
Hi Ovidiu
I haven't really used it unless I anticipate using TAI throughout the entire descent, you usually end up turning it on and off during a typical descent in Europe through all the gnarly weather. I've never considered how this will affect my descent profile. It does make a small difference to your descent of course but it's negligible compared to say a speed change from ATC or a massive shortcut!

I notice that you turned into the operating engine during the hold. Did you intentionally avoid turning into the dead engine, or were you simply following the standard holding instructions?
In a light twin or turboprop, if I remember rightly, avoid holding and turning towards the dead engine. There is no limitation I know of in the 737 👍🏼
FD2S
This is excellent! Thanks very much.
Cheers Jon!
How do you know how far you need to push back?
I always end up in the wrong place.
Hello , i want to install FSX PMDG 2020 , i don't know what PC should i buy which is compatible with the FSX PMDG , any suggestion please ?
Something I've always wondered, what is it like to get sim time as an actual pilot? Does your company have time slots in the simulator that you can sign up for to just try things as you want, or do you have to wait for pre-scheduled simulator schedule times the company assigns to practice set events?
I've always wanted to find someplace near me with a 737 simulator that offered flights, but the nearest I've found is all the way on the West Coast in LA.
Hi Aaron!
Every 6 months you must go in the full motion Sim for your check
The company I work for also have fixed base training devices (FNPT Trainers) which can be booked and used by crew. They have a fully enclosed 737 flight deck where several scenarios can be practiced

Nicely done captain thank you so much ! Btw Why does QRH say that don't use APU bleed air if engine fire switch is illuminated ?
A really good question Mehmet Zeki Demirdelen! I was always under the impression it was to prevent contamination of the air conditioning system.
Asking around and doing some research I’ve had mixed answers
I was directed to this post online with mixed answers from pilots.
www.pprune.org/tech-log/526571-737ng-oei-landing-checklist-additional-ga-thrust-required.html
Put this way, if the engine fire was still illuminated by this point I’d be on the ground by now!!!

This is just awesome. Thanks a lot sir.
Fantastic, as always. Thank you!
You're most welcome Meatball546!

Hey Captain, that was a nice video. I just want to know how could you put the inoperative engine to idle separetly? In my sim when i set thrust off all throttles goes down. Thanks in advance.
what software do you use to record your screen?
An amazing tutorial Captain! When an engine failure like this occurs in real life, what happens to the aircraft after landing? Is the operative engine fully replaced due to the additional load it had to support? Hope FD2S is the operator on my next trip 🙂 Thank you!! P.S. The Maverick signature was awesome 😎
Hi Massimo,
The aircraft would need to be thoroughly inspected before being released back to service and obviously the damaged engine would be replaced. The operative engine should be fine as the thrust you need to set should be well within the operating limits.

Brilliant, very interesting and my weekend just started very well, now if Liverpool can win tomorrow, very happy days indeed!
thanks very much
regards
Gareth
Thanks ghl!
haha double win, good luck for tonight!
FD2S
Thanks, shaould have asked...how did you simulate the engine failure?
thanks
PMDG has a fail management system in the FMC. I selected V1 cut 👍🏼
FD2S
Great thanks, should have RTFM!
I just checked on line and much to my surprise I see that there are quite a number of Boeing A/C that don't have fuel dump capability :- www.boeing.com/assets/pdf/commercial/airports/faqs/fueldump.pdf
Some wag created an add on for the FSX PMDG NGX which would allow a fuel dump & I used it a couple of times during a simulated engine failure. My mistake for not checking the facts......."The facts man.....check the facts" :)
There is a UA-cam video where the crew had to dump fuel after some problem shortly after departure from Zurich airport (Airbus A340). They were directed by ATC over to some forested area to do the dump before returning to LSZH. A good example of engine shutdown procedure :- ua-cam.com/video/rEf35NtlBLg/v-deo.html
Awesome video!
Thank you!
FD2S
I hope you are planning a video about NPA with HDG and VS 😉
HalfmoonSZ something I would like to cover at some point, working through a few tutorials at the moment!

hi ! im from Argentina.
Where download OPT por PMDG ? regards !
Thanks for the video
Why Pan and not Mayday?? Thought Pan was for lesser emergencies?
Hi Joe,
Although a Mayday (emergency) call could’ve been made this is more for distress and imminent danger to either the aircraft, life or other traffic. (Eg Rapid Depressurisation, Fire, Pilot incapacitation)
For us, following the ICAO definition for a PAN call, “it represents an urgent situation, which for the time being at least, does not pose an immediate danger to anyone's life or to the aircraft itself”
A contained engine failure can be easily managed by a competent line crew, so a Pan (urgency) call is enough. Both can be upgraded/downgraded or cancelled at any time

Great video
Very nice and a big thanks
Cheers Jeen!

Is an engine failure panpan?
capt! thanks for this channel you are the best! I always learn with yor tutorials! keep it as long as you can! I trying to understanding how to do more smooth landings (once a week I watch your landing tutorial) but damm, its hard! some times I floooooaaattttt some much and sometimes I do a very hard landing.... I think its my flare thats wrong, any advice? Cheers capt! Lots of cheers from brazil!
Hi Victor, thanks a lot!
Practice makes perfect, you might not have seen it but I do have a tutorial covering the landing technique
ua-cam.com/video/6qnriMfIbEE/v-deo.html
Hope it helps!
FD2S
Hi FD2S, 10:15 You set rudder trim, then after disengaging AP before landing, is that needed to set rudder trim to 0? Thanks.
Hi Frank. Once rudder trim is set leave it for the rest of the sector, no need to reset.
FD2S
flightdeck2sim Thank you for letting me know.
Outstanding thanks!
Thanks for the kind words on this golden oldie tutorial!
