Being from the area and playing the course numerous times as well as attending the Preserve every year but the first, once you make the trip out, you will understand the hype. Sure if you can throw 500+ Foot bombs, the course is easy, but for anyone throwing 350 - 400 feet like myself, that course is a beast! Its nice with all the rain that everyone gets to see how beautiful the course is. It was a shame seeing all the hate online last year with people saying the DGPT shouldn't go there, the course if ugly, its not well kept...
I think a birdie or die course is what the tour needs at this particular junction to spark excitement back up. Mid-season, the potential for a surprise or unusual winner like Bradley Williams, lots of fun to be had
The connection for Teams was a guy who lives in the area of the preserve and plays DG works in MS Teams marketing and made the connection with cale. He was interviewed on tournament central
I think there are a lot of factors on the course that seem minimal on camera but are more impactful when you're there. And a few are exactly what you asked for in a good course. To name a few: Hole 1 - OB short of the hole and left of the hole from landing zone. Doesn't usually come into play for the top guys, but big enough to make a difference lower on the standings. Hole 10 - redesigned to have OB short, long, and left of the hole. Nasty woods on the right. Hole 11 - OB short of the hole Hole 13 - Mississippi is right behind the basket this year. Typically water was low enough to not factor in, but this year anyone could hit the wood chips short and slide 25' into the river. Bye bye disc. Hole 18 - OB short of the hole and short of the first landing zone Plus we've gotten a lot of rain up here this year so the rough is a lot rougher than it has been in the past when the course has been dead. Hole 4-7 could play more difficult just because of that. Anyway, LFG Gavin! Love that pick.
Always love being humbled by the Black Bear course 🐻. Getting a chance to play prior to the pros, feeling like you did OK and then watching them shred really gives you an appreciation for what they do. Love the property and would highly recommend anyone to stop by and play the 3 courses and grabbing an awesome lunch in the process. Perfect day for AM players.
You make a valid point about the Preserve not having much teeth. I live on the Minnesota/Wisconsin boarder and that is quite true for basically all of the courses from Minnesota to the Michigan UP. We have SO MANY absolutely baller courses in the upper Midwest, but technical, wooded, and mostly short is kind of our style. We would love to have a DGPT event in Wisco, but touring pros would destroy any course in this state (maybe aside from Justin Trails-Big Brother.)
The Preserve got a bad rap because of its first showing, but remember Cale put the whole thing together in like a month so the Tour could come there during lockdowns and just have an event.
