  • In progress: a test against the pure nature of the Silvertone Twin Twelve.
    If it's not obvious I start on the Vox and then it just goes back and forth.
    JHS Twin Twelve Pedal VS Silvertone Twin Twelve 1484 Amp.
    Let's do it.
    Vox AC15 Greenback and a Gretsch White Falcon - And of course a Silvertone 1484 Twin Twelve amplifier.

    I'm a big fan of amp in a box style pedals. I love the idea of being able to get a convincing approximation of different amps whether they be obscure or highly sought after just by using a pedal. The one downside is that there are so many great pedals out there that I end up with option paralysis.

    That was great, there should be definitely more shootouts between amp in a box pedals and the amps they are supposed to mimic!

    I see that I'm very late to the party but...Dude you should totally try that same test except pit the Wampler 57 tweed pedal against one of the those tweed Fenders you got behind you. Selfishly, I can say that would help me choose which pedal to buy! And unselfishly I can say it might garner you some more views on another killer video. Cheers!

    I'd like to see the JHS superbolt compaired to a Old Supro Thunderbolt! I have the amp just not the pedal. I also have the Twin Twelve amp with original speakers. But no pedal! Lol. Nice job!!

    The amp does amazingly well in comparison to the pedal. Kudos to the danelectro engineers!

    The pedal is a bit more "gain-y" but the spirit is the same. I had a 1484 back in the 90s but it was too loud for home but not loud enough for gigs (we were too loud, tbh) so I let it go. Absolutely loved the sound, though - must get the stompbox!

    If you scratch it up and make it look rusty, dirty and used it’ll sound better…….

    I treasured my brand new Silvertone Twin Twelve back in the sixties, my first "real" gigging amp. I loved the crunch, but that amp also was capable of many other tones, including decently clean ones, too. Would like to hear a demo of some different settings, both on the old amp and the pedal. (footnote: My next amp was a Fender Showman which was nothing but clean. It "showed" me how I was really playing, with no dirt to cover up my rather inadequate techniques. A real "ear" opener and a major factor in improving my playing.)

    Well, for me it's pretty much the same. The amp is just a little bit warmer, isn't it?

    This is a really great comparison!
    I think, based on what I hear, if the Twin Twelve was going into a more American sounding amp, it'd sound pretty dead on.
    It sounds really nice through the Vox though, the bass is just a little tighter than the 1484.

      I play a twin twelve through my clean Fender Princeton, pretty spot on tone wise in my opinion. Play it through my AC30 though and it will get way too fizzy was the gain goes past twelve. These amp in boxes really do best through clean (neutral) amps. Cool demo..

      I have a Fender Deluxe Reverb reissue and an Vox AC15, the JHS twin12 really made the Fender come alive, but I did not like it on any setting with the Vox. However, thought it sounded pretty good on this video.

    what's your opinion about it ? does it sound like the 1484 at all ? for me it seems quite similar but part of the tone of a 1484 is defined by the Jensen speakers. The speakers do not sound as bright.

    • @Polarbearinspace
      @Polarbearinspace  8 років тому +3

      To me it sounded almost exact. The only difference is old amps, like the 1484, don't have a lot of sustain. They seem to fall off much faster. The pedal had a lot more sustain and didn't fall off like the amp which is good or bad depending on what you like. I like the amp better obviously but the difference between 150 dollars and 750 is pretty significant.

    What were the settings on the Silvertone, if you remember? Always want to crank mine up, but afraid it'll get too loud and bother the neighbors.

    I have all the Silvertone amplifiers including the1485 with 6 10 inch speakers. All of the Silvertone amplifiers were our young garage band amplifiers my first one was a new 1965 1484. They are great amplifiers still cooking hot tubes today. I think JHS making a pedal is really stupid. But JHS is just taking money like all the other pedal makers.

      I loved my 84 It was actually a Twin Twelve combo w 2 speakers and an actual wood handle It had 4 6L6s so I'm not exactly sure what it was but one of the best amps I've ever owned Wish I still had it but do have a great 82 that is plenty loud and warm It's my main gigging amp

    • @richnewman

      You think it's stupid to make a pedal with new components so that we don't have to lug around vintage gear with hard to replace parts? What a ridiculous thing to say. Does your vintage Silvertone allow you to record direct through your interface without a mic, etc? No? If your Silvertone went belly up on tour could you replace it that day for a show? Enough said.

    The real amp sounds more organic like a real amp and the pedal has that buzzy generic pedal sound like all pedals in my opinion.

    • @jcows12
      @jcows12 6 років тому +2

      Jeffrey Brandt while I agree amp overdrive is usually great, I do disagree that all pedals sound buzzy and inorganic. There are some awesome pedals that really make some great tones possible.

    • @richnewman
      @richnewman 3 роки тому +2

      I think the poorly made old speakers and components of the actual amp sound worse than the pedal. Especially if you want a pristine sound for recording. I'd rather have a pedal that I can run direct and get great recordings from--and play on the road without issues--than an old Sears amp that going to be on the verge of breaking down forever. And good luck replacing it if you're touring and it breaks down. But enjoy your bad inputs, old parts, etc., pretending it's not the same exact circuit that's in the pedal...

      @@Ascoundrel actually I believe that Josh from JHS said that the twin twelve pedal is literally the entire amp circuit of a Twin Twelve amp, just with FETs instead of tubes. There shouldn’t be much of a difference as far as gain staging goes, just the differences between tubes and fets.
      I thought the pedal sounded pretty great, the main difference here is the speaker selection.
