You have a great demeanor about you, which I appreciate greatly. Thank you for all you do for us hoi polloi.
A true stand up member of society. The information you share is valuable to everyone who uses an amp.
Nice video. I took a look at mine just now. It was purchased in 1999. Looks like the day I bought it. No signs of melting at all. I only play in the bedroom though, so maybe that has something to do with it. I'll keep an eye on it.
Thanks for the vids on UA-cam over FB!
I'm working on a Hot Rod, some signs of heat on the board. Waiting on F&T caps and Diods. Have the 5 watts in stock. Great video.
Wow, 1 digit off from having S/N “123456”. Cool stuff! Thanks for sharing
Really enjoying your vids 👍🔥🎸🦅
I have a first generation of this amp and it's been nothing but trouble. Selling it as soon as it comes back from the shop.
I bought a blonde reissue Deville 410 (II) with worn original output tubes. The PCB has no signs of any heat at all?
I watched a video of a tech in Australia who used a special lead-forming tool to put a clean half-round kink or loop in the resistor leads so that the resistor would stand off from the board automatically, without spacers (and to absorb mechanical stress from expansion and contraction, heating and cooling). Having manually bent loops like that in component leads many hundreds of times (with ordinary needlenose pliers or hemostats), I thought to myself, I really should get a set of those. Well, I don't know what brand he uses, but I found out while looking online that there are dozens of varieties of lead-forming pliers, starting at about $170 US and up to $300 or so, and its not always clear from the ads and catalog photo how they work or what type of bends they put in the leads---- and many of them are discontinued or out of stock. I may have to make my own!
Got my pos hr deluxe in 2018 or so., right after the store warranty expired it was unusable. It’s in brand new condition, in its cover, in a closet., I’ll get to it someday I guess, but my 100w boss katana 2x12 has never let me down
Yep this happened to my now five year old HRD. I changed everything as seen on this video and amp still does not work. Disappointing and extremely frustrated. When turned on there is no sound and no power light. Just dead silence. But the foot switch lights up under power. that light works on the the amp too. My amp still looks showroom new. What else could it be? Both fuses and light are not burned out . You should not have to by a new amp every few years like a cell phone. Thanks for your video!! -John B.
Gave a quick look under the hood my type iv has the 5 watt resistors 1/2” off the board . It is a limited edition (tweed ) so maybe made in America ?
That’s good to hear. Only took them 30 years to implement what any first year electronics student would suggest.
And no, not US made.
Does anyone know if this has been corrected at any stage in later manufacturing year Hot Rod Deluxe IIIs and IVs? I have a 2023 made George Benson HRD which is based on the HRD III and hope that this won't be an issue.
Thank you for the video. What other fender amps have these issues? I’ve heard the blues junior & Blues deluxe have them as well. Is this true? Also, what is the cost of the repairs on the hot rod?
If we can get a parts list to replace these components, it would be very much and
Had my Fender deville 212 IV for 10 months and have to take it into the shop. I'm really disappointed in the quality of these amps. It was really expensive and only used it at home so it shouldn't be broken already
Try having a deluxe for 4 days with a gig in a week
the blue 2 watt resistor is a green resistor labled r97 on my 2017 Mexican made hot rod delux iv. do you know what kind they used on mine?
On the HR Deluxe it's a 2W 1.2K. On the HR DeVille it's a 2W 820 ohm.
I replace them with new 2W metal oxides mounted about 1/2" advice the board, for airflow and so the longer leads dissipate any heat before it reaches the pads on the board.
@@PsionicAudio Thank you!!
The DeVille and Deluxe use the same pcb. They are the same apart from the power supply.
Really interesting thanks. Do you know if the latest version (HRD IV) has the same problems and cheap components?
i fucken hate that amp. i wouldnt trust anything fender makes anymore, ive gone through two amps (fender blues deluxe reissue) and the hrd iv. both broke within a month of use im not even kidding. dont buy shit made from mexico, id buy a used USA 1996 hot rod deville if i were you.
Do you yall know of a good amp tech in north east CT ?
Do you think a good pair of fans would protect the PCB board from overheating on all these components and prolong the amp's life? Thanks!
No. Just move them a bit off the board with longer leads. Simpler is best.
@@PsionicAudio thanks for the answer! The fact is I've already build a triplay back panel with 1 fan pointing directly to the transformer (air comes in) and the other one is sucking out the hot air. Neither of those are pointing to the tubes. The amp never gets hot, even with 4-6 hours operating at moderate volumes. My question regards the need for a future repair even with this cooling method. Do still need to change these stock components for better ones?
I’m surprised that the zeners give trouble.
Exactly the same. Every single time.
A great commercial for the fender Mustang gtx 100, You don’t have to be an electrician to play guitar.
I really don't understand why Fender hasn't addressed the crappy box resistors and don't go ahed and raise them off of the board.
Why take a simple bias circuit design and make it more complicated and dangerous?
These amps are just crummy. I have an original Blues Deluxe. Sounds good. Junk inside. I had no idea, when I bought it in 1994.
You say "take your amp to a qualified repairman, as if all you have to do is pick up your phone and call one". That's much easier said than done.
Pretty much everything built nowadays is garbage and cheap? I just saw your video on the Vox 10.
If these problems are recurring with all Hot Rod Deluxe & Hot Rod DeVille, can we not assume that Fender knows this? For a nominal increase, higher quality components would fix the problem. Building a good amp at cost should not mean a compromised design with sub par components (IC caps) prone to failure. Factor the small cost increase into the RRP. C'est tout!
They only care about the two year warranty period.
These things make me cringe every time I get a call about one of the "hot rod" amps.
I stopped taking in work and only build my own amps now mostly due to these amps and fixing other "techs" work.
I still get calls from friends wanting me to fix their amps and it seams that they are inevitable Hot Rods.
More junk valve amps, I'm glad I've switched to Boss katanas
I think someday I will buy a roland blues cube amp. The hot rod sounds very good, the build quality should be better.
You forgot to add /s for sarcasm. You've swapped a crappily-built (but usually repairable) reissue-type tube amp for a crappy solid-state/ heavily digitized amplifier that no one will want to work on when it eventually malfunctions. It'll just go into a landfill.....
@@goodun2974 and its tonal characteristics are Awful at best !
I bought the latest version for a toy to mess with, it went back within a week as it had ZERO useful tones. The Katana and many other wizzbang super wahoo amps must mean that the next generation is tone deaf.
KTana sucks cmprd to a hotrod
