تتكاثر بسرعة كبيرة على مدار العام وتنجب عدداً يتراوح مابين خمسين إلى مئة سمكة.

ينضج الذكر جنسياً في الأسبوع السابع والأنثى في الأسبوع العاشر.
.
ويقوم الذكر بالمطاردة والاندفاع نحو الأنثى ويحاول إقناعها بهز زعانفه.

ثم تقوم الإناث بتخزين الحيوانات المنوية داخل أجسامها لتخصيب البيض وتكون مدة الحمل بين ثلاثة إلى أربعة أسابيع ثم يفقس البيض ويخرج الصغار من بطن أمهم.

ويجب عزل الصغار فوراً في حوض مستقل لمنع الأسماك الكبيرة من أكلهم.
