@@GutenGardening it is first time i grow corn and see huitlacoche! Search for information, your video appear and i was interesting and try new thing, but i like the recipe that you share and another video that you have!
Thank you for the info!! The first time, I saw it on my corn, it had already burst… And it looked like a portal to the underworld. my wife looked it up online, and told me it was corn smut, so I had to immediately find out more for myself, simply because of the name😂. The corn stocks we had in the front of the yard were also affected, but now I knew what I had, and went to get to it! I’ll let you know how my first full garden meal goes.
Would you happen to know how someone can pressure can it? I know you can do mushrooms but this I have never tried. It would be cheaper in the long run than going to the store and buying it. It is very expensive in some areas here in the states.
great video! love the info! if you have an abundance you can charcoal it and add it to meals for alkalizing. there was a study done that huitlacoche may even assist autoimmune diseases as a subunit oral vaccine!
Never have I had my corn do that. Not sure that I could get past the appearance if it did though.😳 I would be interested in what vegetables you are starting for your winter inside grow. Will you be sharing that info ?🤗
It takes a moment to get past the appearance, but it is worth it in the end. :) We will absolutely be talking about our indoor plans in the not too distant future. :) Stay tuned.
As the huitlacoche matures, like any mushroom, it spores out, to reproduce. At that point, as you said, it is not edible, but I wonder if You could save it to inoculate next year's crop.
We love sweet corn so much, too. But, when that goes wrong and this is the result, we can't be completely disappointed. Taste it once, and it could make all the difference in how you think about it. :D :D
I am thinking that one thing we will do next year is go heavier on the nitrogen and see what difference that makes. We have not had a lot of corn production the last two years either. At least there is always next year. :D
Thanks for watching! 👍👍
I remember my mom calling it smut and looking at it disgustedly, as she cut it off and threw it in the garbage! Who knew?? Very interesting!
That is the initial reaction we had last year, but after learning about it and trying it, that won't be our reaction in the future. :)
Your channel is going to take off. Keep posting and may the algorithm bless you~
Thank you so much Willow! We will keep working! :)
I like to think of it as "corn truffles" LOL
Perfect! That is absolutely a great way to think about it. :)
Thanks for the information! I think is the BEST THAT I FOUND in english!
Thank you so much! We got more huitlacoche this year. If you have made it before, what is your favorite recipe?

Going to harvest my corn soon and I have a few ears with smut 😆, good to know about freezing.
Awesome video 🌱
Thank you so much! It was a tasty video to make. :D
Must be that time of year! Just saw a video on this yesterday on McGie Homestead. Micah talked all about it, while eating pieces between sentences!
Yep. This is the time of year, up here anyway, where it will show up. A very tasty fungus even if the appearance is off putting. :)

Ate this in Guanajuato Mexico. Right now I have a melting down mess of corn shutting. How do I use what I have to get more corn to respond next year.
Hello! I'm new to the channel. What zone are you in? I am in 8a. This is the first year I did corn and all my ears looked like this!🤦🤦
Welcome!! We are in zone 5 Wisconsin. What did you decide to do with the huitlacoche?
Don't worry my friend, the police don't charge people for eating huitlacoche with hard tacos! Just do what you want.
Ha! You know, you do with what you have on hand. Thank you for the comment, and have a fantastic week!
The look of it is definitely off putting but I think I'd be brave enough to try it 😄
Just think of it like a mushroom. :) It is really tasty, and easy to prepare. I like the smaller pieces the best raw. :)
my corn got this smut before and I wasn't sure what it was but now I do
Great! It is a very expensive but delicious Mexican delicacy. We hope to get more this season.
What do they taste like?
Do you know how much would be to much to eat?
Great question! I don't actually know what that limit would be. But, we don't eat the ones that are old or decayed looking.

As a LOVER of sweet corn, smut showing up has always been the worst thing that could happen. Wow. Who knew? But I still don't want it--LOL!

My corn has been a bust for two years running. This year I tried a variety designed for container growing and still 👎🏾.

try to grow with beans. it takes all the nitrogen from the soil and pole beans with supply soil with nitrogen. look up 4 sisters growing.
Looks awful, and you’re braver than me eating it… lol 😂 xx Cathi xx
It's look and it's taste couldn't be farther apart, in my opinion. :D It really is quite delicious.
