    I'm the 7 ft giant on the right end of the IU snare line and i just wanted to say that SCSU was SICK! those guys were so cool and I had a blast drumming with them
    Props to both lines! Probably the most fun I've had in a line. =]

    Both schools put on a show. I have marched for a corp style band in high school and for a black university show band. Both styles are unique and entertaining. Both of these lines threw it down and I would say it is a tie due to the different styles and showmanship.

    Such a great time! So glad SCSU was able to come up to this game. Wish we could have played some more and talked a bit, but it was great to play with you all!

    Nice exchange. This was a wonderful case of apples and oranges. This needs to happen more often among HBCU bands.
    Who knows? It might help other lines improve, if not innovate, in the process.

    I see Indiana University’s drum line played “ Latin Lover” by Jim Casalla, legendary percussion arranger, and head percussion instructor for both Santa Clara Vanguard and the Cavaliers. Nice percussion feature 👍👍

    "They're two drum lines that take two different approaches. So it's not really fair to pick a winner." I agree, well said! Case in point are the way that each group interprets their changes and rhythm combos within their perspective cadences.

    Shoutout and mad props to all the guys and gals in the SCSU Drumline! It's not often we get a chance to drum with any drumlines outside of the Big Ten and this will definitely go down as one of the best drum offs we've had in the history of the IU Drumline. Absolute blast! Thanks again guys!

    I'm the section leader at Savannah State University and I have to say out of all the HBCU conferences the MEAC has the best drumlines. I'm glad to see the trend of the HBCU drumline wanting to be more technical...it's a good movement. (I wish FAMU would get on board with it.)
    But yeah Bango Brothers, MDF$, ColdSteel, Sudden Impact, and Krush Groove are the lines to look for in the MEAC! NICE BATTLE.

    As a member of a visiting high school band that day (Seymour, mellophone 1.) I think I speak for our entire band when I say we were completly BLOWN away by both bands. As our director went to IU we do alot of big ten band performances, and the SCSU band blew everyone out of the water. You guys are all such great inspirations to high school musicans, thank you so much for such a GREAT performance :))))))

  • @nubreaks2
    @nubreaks2 11 років тому +26

    Aren't drumline battles supposed to be one part precision + one part showmanship? Every band competition I've seen have been based on both. If that's the case, while IU, one of my alma maters, was clean, SCSU completed the mix much better because IU was almost no show. And I don't care about the corp versus show band comparison, there are some corp bands which incorporate show into their battles and some show bands exhibit corp extremely well. Just saying.

    Are people saying there's a "Style" difference simply because it's a black line vs a Majority white Line? Both lines played very melodic material. The make-up of the lines aside from the tenor drums (single) was the same. They both had choreography and visuals. Are they not both playing percussion instruments. Don't see much of a style difference here. Just two good lines sparring musically.

    • @janellesouvane1380

    Sounding good Indiana. I haven't seen SCSU before. I LOVE the fact that they have the tradition of HSBC's in their drumming AND they have some modern technique and quality of sound in their approach too... Really nice to see them combine the two seamlessly. I'm afraid to scroll down through the comments since I'm sure the usual haters will be on here.

    I know that it's any drumline's goal to play as clean as possible because that's one thing that makes watching, listening to, & playing in a drumline fun. What I mean is show bands are more visual than corp style bands so it's no argument that corps style groups tend to play their music cleaner from player to player than show style. Both groups are very good, but like I said, I don't really think it's fair to say either one is better. They're both very good for their different performance styles

  • @terrelljones2577
    @terrelljones2577 6 років тому +1

    MDFS should have been in this to. I think both lines were excellent, well played. I'm also a drummer and I was impressed. They should have a big drumline competition and everyone should be judge together on cleanliness and precision and showmanship no matter hbcu or Corp style. The competition should be HBCU AND all other college bands together and I think they should also do a mass drum session like they do at the Honda BOTB. Let's make it happen because that's one show I will not miss.

    @irdeson.Much respect..only reason i said that is because SCSU percussion instructor was a former snare drummer for the blue devils which gives them an edge on most HBCU percussion section. like i said before i love hbcu percussion section VSU, MDFS, JCSU, A&T, Albany State, BCC, Howard drumline is coming up, i live right down the street from howard and theyre stepping their game up big time. Those are some of my favorite lines. Check out the vid Scsu vs Mdfs.

    I haven't seen many good college lines and I was surprised at this video. Both were pretty good but the stick height consistency of Indiana was a little better and in my opinion (solely my own) I think the togetherness looks much cooler and shows more talent because it's harder than just playing. But thumbs up to both lines.

    Both bands really did well. I wish I could have heard SCSU's response to IU's second go. Clearly IU took it up a notch. Lol. I think music is the great equalizer and it's awesome that these two Universities were able to get together and make magic. I do hate it was labeled as a battle but nonetheless this was great. Hopefully, this isn't an aberration but a new fad.

    I would have to agree on some parts of what you said only because I've played both sides of the tracks. I hate corp style marching but I have to admit it felt great to hear judges tapes and the percussion sections takes the least amount of hits the flag team but to honestly say no fun or swag you have to actually been there to know whats really good. And they should keep that stuff at those D1 schools cuz HBCU's get down
