It's always fun to see someones first impressions of a game. A few starting tips: 1.The glowing hammer icon in the workbench is your repair button, so you don't have to throw away any more axes :) 2.Items that can be eaten will have a small fork icon on top of them, stamina focused foods are yellow forks, health are red forks, and general foods are grey forks. 3.'Farming' technically starts a ways after the first boss, so your semi-stable source of food for early game will be berries, mushrooms, and meats; animals respawn somewhat randomly, and berries and mushrooms regrow after several hours, so you can find a good rotation to accumulate those, and come back later to get those resources again. 4.Combat in Valheim plays somewhat similarly to the Dark Souls games, if you have ever played them, learning the timing of enemy attacks to parry with shields or dodge-roll away is the ultimate key to success in almost all combat. 5.There is one early resource you are currently lacking, a certain type of white rock that spawns near or in shallow waters, it's the final piece to the early crafting puzzle you need.
Sitting next to a fire (with x) or being in a shelter next to a fire gives you the "resting" buff, after 20 seconds or so it will provide the "rested" buff for a set duration. It gives you health and stamina regen. There's also a place in your inventory where you can see the status effects applied to you. My tip is always get rested buff :)
