@Dell0304 Matsushita was the company which made all Panasonic, Technics, Quasar, and National products, until 2008 when they officially changed their name to Panasonic Corporation.
@ericurt62 It is a 12 volt gel cell battery. I connected it to the battery and ignition wires (positive) and ground wire (negative) of the radio's wiring harness.
Just installed the factory radio into my 87 cressida, it has the am stereo. I always have wanted to use c-quam am! I was super surprised to be able to pick up a stereo station broadcasting a baseball game.
I used to have a 1986 Camry with this radio. It was awesome. The AM stereo sounded really good, and when you used the wideband button, you couldn't tell if you were listening to FM or AM. Best factory car radio I ever had!
What a nice looking radio... I love this edgy 1980s design very much (probably because I grew up with it). Many modern car radios look and feel like toys, at least in the aftermarket segment.
@mitm19 No, car radios use the external whip antenna for both AM and FM. An internal antenna would not work because the metal casing of the radio would prevent the signals from getting in.
My 1986 Grand Prix had a factory radio/cassette player with AM stereo. WBZ AM broadcasted in stereo. I never really listened to anything but FM stations when I had that car, like most people back then.
My parents had a 1986 Toyota Camry that had a AM Stereo car radio. I tried the AM stereo part, but it just made more static, I don't think any of the AM stations in our area had stereo over the air. Once was told AM stereo is "just static in both ears". So you can guess how many people were interested in AM stereo. The FCC's lax roll out of "let the market" decide before they finally went in and forced a standard (in 1993!) failed miserably. By then it was too late. What were the manufactures supposed to put in your car stereo? If the chosen format was not the one your car stereo had, well too bad for you.. There were several competing formats in the beginning. Chicago's WLS 890kHz was the closest AM Stereo station to me, and they initially used the Kahn-Hazeltine system also called ISB. However, most stations have dropped AM Stereo and replaced it with incompatible (in relation to AM-Stereo) digital AM HD-Radio or nothing at all. Also, years ago the AM stations narrowed their bandwidth to 10kHz spacing, thus further limiting their fidelity.
This is the route I took as well. I got a Delco UX-1 for about the same price on eBay recently and over all I am very impressed with the system. Both the AM and FM sections work flawlessly along with the cassette player. On AM stereo stations the sound quality rivals FM stereo plus it looks like I got the AMAX certified post 1993 variant that tunes in the expanded band.
The cassette deck was great too. That APS button was used with REW and FF buttons. Press the APS before you hit REW or FF and it skipped to the end or beginning of the current song. Not bad for a cassette deck!
i was looking information for the original radio of my celica and i found you, i think i would get the same as yours, not the original one, but it will fit right.
@spunker88 WCTC went back to their long-time News/Talk format, which they've had since the late '80s. They tried Oldies for a few years, but the ratings weren't that good. I still have Oldies on AM from 1250 WMTR in Morristown, and they sound great, but are only mono.
@KayserIllumina WROW is too far to reach NJ; on 590 I get WARM from Scranton, PA, a cookie-cutter "True Oldies Channel" station. I can also get WHTG during the daytime, but usually with lots of interference from all the other stations on 1410 kHz in surrounding states.
Sounds pretty good :) and lol at the sports hehe The radio in my NYer has AM stereo as well. Currently got the whole radio apart recapping and fixing bad solder joints. I'll present that when it's done.
I saw this one on eBay. I thought about bidding on it...if you ever decide to sell PM me the eBay link! Ive never seen a Technics car stereo ever, so that's something else alone. Its got a lot of features in it, probably was not cheap back in the day if it was an option. Very very cool.
You wouldn't happen to know the wiring diagram for the unit? I have a similar one CQ-YS866A. It is kinda hard to find an accurate diagram online and want to make sure I can connect ALL wires possible to a 2011 Sentra. Sure it's a downgrade from the dead aftermarket unit currently installed but it has its purpose. Thanks!
Doesn't the AM receiver use an internal ferrite rod antenna? I wonder if the reason the FM receiver isn't working is due to the connection to the antenna, I have had issues connecting antennas to those weird connectors that they have on car stereos (that don't have that standard plug that is in the car)
hey VWestlife, I know that this video is old but I recently bought this radio and it's also missing the wiring harness and there's literally no place to find its pinout, the model that I have has the "panels" inverted (volume panel on the right side and the radio controls on the left but regardless it's almost the same radio design and model which should be the Technics 5604 86120-22500. Probably because came from a Toyota Cresta imported from Japan). Do you have a more specific wiring diagram of your wiring harness? :(
Hi, I actually I'm trying to fix this radio as well, I'm having problems with the cassette. I have pictures of the wires and the harness if you need them, I also found a website that explains what each cable is. If you still need it let me know
is there a way to fix this problem?? yif you got enny links let me know thx alot ... iam trying to get mine to work .. cant find one original in good functioning order

I'm using an AM Stereo radio listening to your AM stereo radio introduction right now.
Didn't know that Technics made car stereos. Nice

My 1986 Panasonic clock radio is made my Matsushita!
The OEM Clarion/BOSE stereo in my Nissan Maxima had AM Stereo. Something you just don't see anymore.
@ashleycox432 The cassette player works fine but plays a little slowly, probably due to worn out belts.
Aside from the fact that this particular radio receives AM stereo signals, I had never seen a Technics car radio before...

Sweet find

dmine45 you should have at least 4 seconds of silence on the tape to get this feature working
i was looking information for the original radio of my celica and i found you, i think i would get the same as yours, not the original one, but it will fit right.
Do you fix radio’s? I have 2 vintage 85 Celica radios that I would like to get at least one working.

Wow, I never knew Panasonic made car stereos under the Technics name. I especially like the 9-Band graphic EQ, I had a Technics home EQ a while back.

@destroyersoueu Are you confusing me for DrCassette? I'm using the same Canon FS200 that I've used for most videos since October 2009.
you seem to get quite a few stations where you live.
Nice radio to.
Top make.
Sounds pretty good :) and lol at the sports hehe

Could you send me the link to the pigtails for the wiring harness? I’m looking to buy some
I don't have any link. Just do your own searching for a 1980s Toyota car radio reverse harness.

@@fluis943 please send that to me
This Stereo sounds really good even on UA-cam.
Toyota didn't mess around back then...
Hey boss! By any chance can you make a updated vid on this and if there’s any possible way to get the system itself tuned up?
Do we need to connect this to amplifier to power on speakers ?
Yes... i was confusing you...i tried to delete but was late.... you are not the one is using an old three CCD Sony camera.
how can I find these AM stereo car radios on eBay. Searching for AM stereo get bad results. HELP
So long ago but wondering if you still have it lol
No, I sold it.
AM Stereo Rocks!
is there a way to fix this problem?? yif you got enny links let me know thx alot ... iam trying to get mine to work .. cant find one original in good functioning order
Does 590 WROW reach north Jersey? Try pulling that in, but it might be too far...
Try 1410 WHTG from the Jersey Shore too, that might reach, maybe...
I got a radio a bit like that just smaller the only thing is the am don't work and the fm barely works.
Have you heard a faint whistle / tone on 890 kHz?
I haven't listened lately.
Was this made using your new three CCD new camera?
I am looking to buy one to replace the unit in my 86 Cressida.. Do you know where I can find one???
I have one for sale
Looking for one now?
@029622558 According to the ABC Book, the preferred pronunciation is "mot-SOOSH-tah".
@vwestlife Yeah, I heard that in the video =)
What is the name of the station broadcasting on AM 1580?
Omar Crisante That was my own transmitter.
Have you ever thought of giving it a name? Maybe broadcast your own radio station?
Omar Crisante I only use it for tests like this, I don't have it on all the time.
Do you have one you'd sell? I need one for my 85.
You don't like sports?
