Always cute to see people who just discovered 3d printers freak out and get excited
I discovered them a decade ago. But I'm dam glad they have made them so much better.
@@SVSeeker hell yeah Doug, love it!
Alright Doug enough 3d printing, time to go sailing.
Coming Soon
I remember when I came over and helped you rebuild the control box for the plasma cutter, you told me that you could "adapt" the plasma cutter to be a 3d printer. I kinda felt at the time that wasn't going to be worth the trouble... also, you were of the opinion, "plastic 3D printed parts don't belong on a steel boat..." I think I said "I was going to buy a plastic boat and have a plastic 3D printer on my boat." Anyways, fast forward a few years, I bought my boat and I'm fixing it up. I bought a 3D printer too, the Qidi Tech X-Smart 3. A few times I thought to myself, "Maybe I should sail my way down to Florida and show Doug how good these 3D printers are getting.” Guess I don’t need to… you bought the bigger brother of my printer! I agree with you on the software side. It sucks to “NEED” an internet connection to run your CAD software…
You definitely don't need to know CAD to make use of a 3D printer. Chances are very good that whatever widget you need, you're not the first person to need one. Whatever part you broke, you're not the first person to break it. The free and open source parts repositories are HUGE. For me, printing $5 and $10 parts I can order from Amazon is one of the great uses for a 3D printer. I get the part in 45min and it cost me $0.14.
Not in my opinion. If I can buy it from Amazon and it's really a good fit for what I need then Amazon it is. But the power to me is in making exactly what I need. And I would normally do that with aluminum and a welder. But the with the improvements in strength and reliability the world has shifted a bit.
@@SVSeeker Well maybe when you're in the middle of the Atlantic you're opinion will change... Lol. I've had good luck with TPU printed gaskets. Custom printed gaskets might come in handy on a boat!
Heck, Doug, you can 3D print your next boat!
Need to look into boring the tapered hole and then thread milling the NPT using conversational control. Much easier to mill a thread.
Awesome video, by the way!
its "common practise" to do a 0.2mm gap for printed parts that slide together like the dovetails, it varied between printers ofc but 0.2 is a nice start
Ermagerd! Haven't seen such frenetic new tool usage since I got a a lable printer.
Go Doug.
best things ever for the creative next to music and paper. that's my top 3 list.
lmao this is doug at this most unhinged, i love it! we just got out 3d printers out in the class i teach, what fun!
My printer started as a kit bought 10 years ago, it has been modified so much that by now it's pretty much my own design. For me most of the fun is in designing the printer itself, though it has proven useful for some practical stuff too. Like printing TPU parts for a vintage car.
Time to buy I guess I'll get another one
Great! …. wait, how many do you have?
@@SVSeeker never enough tools doug you know that
@@Ligby We're going to need a bigger boat. : )
I have been 3d printing wall mounts for things an random divider boxes for years. I also 3d print things I plan to cnc out of metal later. Gives me a cheap, real object to feel an test before wasting expensive metal an finding a mistake on that.
If you use Orca Slicer, you don't have to design in the dovetails. The slicer has a built-in 9bject split function that can add dovetails for you. Or do other alignment aids.
you might want to shrink the thread portion in the X,Y by about 2% to get a good fit. Each printer and material is different. experiment to find the best fit.
Yeah, I looked for that feature but could only find scaling it in 3 dimensions.
@@SVSeeker I'm using Bambu Studio and it will allow you to adjust any/all.
Kids growing up with home-built 3d printers and going to make for excellent CNC operators later on. That's a damn-good job to have.
Right on. Especially if they and CAD and actually building useful things to their skill set.
Doug 0:05 on the far right of the frame up against the wall, that box is a filament dry box it has a support inside for the spools and a gland to pass filament out. Keeps dust and moisture out of your prints you will need that for printing TPU or Nylon.
The amount of tech you have operating on solar on that ship is impressive
Yeah, it’s a lot of fun.
I might get the bigger model, i print telescope parts and car parts. My car is from 1963 so what plastic parts there are on the car are getting a little brittle so i can just easily orint new parts.
Just a word of caution regarding 3d prints. They are not watertight, there are microscopic holes between layers.
Yeah, we have tested them in a hyperbaric chamber and that is actually a feather. The parts seemed to flood and relieve the pressure without damage.
Its fun watching Doug getting excited over his discovery of 3d printing. I built my first 3d printer in 2016 from a kit, Not a pull out of the box and plug it in. A full on box of nuts and bolts and wires and motors. My 2nd printer i designed and built myself and has a ginormous build area of 500mm x 800mm. I am curious to what sized nozzle is on that printer of yours, it seems large which is how it prints fast. I tend to use much smaller nozzles for better detail but much slower print speeds
3d Printers are the best in a DIY setting because they fill a gap that no other material fulfills. Wood is good for large stuff, metal for strength & wear items and 3d printed parts for small odd shaped stuff. I would never be able to cut metal or wood into specific small shapes like a 3d printer can with the same speed and accuracy.
+ when you learn techniques to integrate metal into prints (captive nuts & bolts, threaded inserts), 3d printers really have unmatched versatility.
True that. I have never used a sphere in CAD until last night because I have no way of cutting that. It's part of a fiddle rail bracket.
I built my own 3d printer out of spare Xerox parts (Helps to be a tech!), that was fun and all but like you said, the constant setup and what not gets old. Definitely going to be picking up one of these. Thanks Doug
I added a print head to my CNC table. It worked, but not nearly and nice a job as this Q1. ua-cam.com/video/dWgAYFYT_jI/v-deo.html
Right now is the best time to get into 3d printers. They finally just work and are affordable.
Definitely!
What an awesome tip on the threads. I just got the same Qidi Q Pro printer. Subbed. Subbed.
Glad it was helpful
Openscad is the best CAD. For example, If you want a 100 millimeter cube, you just write "cube(100)". There is nothing to learn..
You have the koolist tools. I do lots of the same stuff around my shop but but my tools are old school cuz I am old school.
Nothing wrong with old school. A sharp wood planer is a thing of joy.
@@SVSeeker how about a lap wheel on a hand grinder, that’s my style
@@deanlamberth0sbcglob Do what makes you happy. But do.
thank you my friends...
Our pleasure!
Great video as usual 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
PETG and TPU are my goto filament types, both stand up well to fuel, oil, and direct exposure to FL weather. PETG for rigid items and TPU for things that need to flex like rubber. The only limiting factor is my imagination and drying the filament before use.
FYI plastic filament WILL absorb moisture from the humid air much like descant beads and the absorbed water will flash to steam as it goes thru the extruder creating horrible prints. If you ever get "bad" filament odds are it isn't bad its just needs to be dried out. I only mention this as I dismissed this topic as BS when I first started and in hindsight I wish someone would have convinced me of its importance! Lots of ways to dry filament, all of which are easy to implement as long as you know its something you will need to do from time to time!
A lot of good information there. Thanks
Captain? 🎉
Maybe you should change your mission. You could save a sinking battle ship with all the capabilities your vessel has. Way cool stuff.
Doug you can buy 3d metal prinder.
For cutting threads in harder materials I don't know if NPT can be cut without a 5 axis machine but they do make thread cutters for cnc.
They do, but I don't have to cutter. I do have pipe taps. : )
The funfair/carnival model in the videos on my channel is fully 3d printed. Thought about sharing it for your WDYMT segment but its not boat related.
Please do. WDYMT is a lot more than just boats.
I told you the 3d printer was worth it!
Lol and you laughed at me
Took Andy to convince me by printing something useful, and not a bull shit toy. : )
Yep about a week ago.
McMaster Carr is a fantastic resource but they have frequently sent cease and desist letters to individuals and companies (mostly companies) for using their models in 3D printing since it's against their T&C. I have even seen a few companies have to settle for copyright infringement for recommending others to use the 3D models for 3D printing. You'll probably be fine, but just be careful. Copyright law in the US is a real PITA. Even though NPT is an open standard, they designed the files and shared them according to their terms, it's a pretty easy trap to fall into.
Don't think they are going to care enough to bother with the home DIY crowd. And there are a lot of stupid laws out there just begging to be ignored. : )
I printed parts made of pla for my workshop. After 2 years, they deteriorated because of the UV light from welding.
I have some PLA out outside, sort of a test. It if and when it dies I'll load some ASA, bring up the old file, and press go. At this stage of life, two years seems like a long time. : )
I ordered one, thank you. Receive it on July. Sorry your link work only on USA
No worries. Have fun with it.
Man, I should’ve gotten a bigger boat! Seeing you hang all those tools made me jealous! Wild that 3D printed brackets are strong enough to hold that massive pipe wrench!
So that I have a reference point, how long did it take to print each spice rack?
I think it was 7 hours for the one that is two pieces. The nice thing is that it will stop and wait for you to add more filament and it will stop if the filament gets snagged coming off the spool. So a print 3/4's done does not get wasted. I just start the long jobs before going to bed.
@@SVSeekerso cool! The only time I’ve ever screwed around with one was about 10 years ago. Took all night long just to make a small body panel pry bar.
Ever since I saw your original video about the printer, I’ve been trying to figure out how to fit one on my boat.
Wow, now you can make Dollar Store trinkets right there on the boat. Curious about the cost to produce. what did the spice racks cost in materials for example. I want one, just not sure I can justify it.
You are right. And like I said. If you can buy it off Amazon it's bull shit. But Amazon does not sell hangers for my tools. Custom sized spice racks. Brackets to ceiling mount my boathooks, fiddle rails for my floor boards, low profile 3/4" plugs with handles, etc See this for cost: ua-cam.com/video/4gurT7wcsr0/v-deo.html
hmmm...I saw on their website that a guy made a storage box for his triathlon bike. Now I am very interested because newer gravel bikes have storage compartments but you only get them if you buy a new bike. I have an older frame so I would need to model and test. What filament do you like to use?
I've only used PLA but I have some ASA now. And I am a nube so not the one to ask. : )
What filament did you use for the wall-mounted tool holders? Was it the same for the spice rack?
Yes, it's all PLA. But I use at least 5, sometimes 6 solid layers and 50% infill and try to design things as beefy as I can. Time will tell but I like the strength.
@@SVSeeker I'm going to blame you when my wife gets mad I dropped $500 on the printer. Lol. My last reservation was the strength of the plastic. I customize brackets and holders all the time. Thanks for the info.
That's cool, how much is the plastic media that printer uses? Have you printed yourself a set of handcuffs and leg restraints, when Betsy comes to visit so she can have her way with you lol. In all seriousness that 3D printer is handy you made all kinds of racks and tool holders you'd never find in a store.
It depend on the setting when you slice it up for printing. I like 5 or 6 layers for the walls and 50% infill. I figure it's going to cost me a lot more in filament if the part breaks. Even then I save money stuff on Amazon which is lighter weight and not as good of a fit.
@@SVSeeker Interesting, I see your thinking build it good once than try save on material then having to make it twice.
you would love your 3d printer more if it was a Bambu Lab X1C combo!
Not what I need. I want parts, not rainbows at twice the price.
P1s combo. It's not about rainbows.
The AMS is another big step up in quality of life. Set and forget operation. No messing about waiting for heatup to change out filiments and automatic filament changing when a spool runs out are worth the price of admission. It's also a dry box - great for humid environments.
I'm sure the quidi is also pretty great and a huge step up from the Ender's etc of a few years ago.
Could you please bring back the original first version of Darwin the Bilge Rat, Please and Thank you
What’s it worth of you? :-)
@@SVSeeker $100
@@ericed69 LOL I'm sure Betsy will go for that. Let me check.
Have you considered peroxide for water treatment? Only side effect is oxygen and purifies water. They have test strips to verify part per million. Need to get stronger concentrate peroxide like 50% or more.
Not really. Clorox seems to be doing fine. What's the benefit of peroxide?
@@SVSeeker no added change to taste. Some people don’t like taste/odor with Clorox. Clorox works for you rock on. I use peroxide in new wells to clarify them without upsetting customers.
I haven't bought a 3D printer yet because in israel/palestine they cost double or more than in other countries.
it's not just 3D printers, all machines cost double or more here, for example I recently was interested in a dewalt table saw which in america costs about 330USD and here it costs about 750USD
Dam. I thought the EU and Australia was bad.
What happens when you are healed over in rough seas to those items attached but not really locked in place?
We were in 8 foot seas an they were just leaning up in a corner and they stayed there. They are much better attached now. : )
Can you say Gàulded Dovetails
Sure , I knew that you could
did you say that program was "bob CAD", like someone's name? is it free?
Not Free at all. Bob-CAD CAM.
Are they sold out now?
They are backlogged. You have to buy the Pre-Sale, but they are shipping now. Andy got his a couple of days ago. qidi3d.com?sca_ref=5959670.X0PNd9qMCR
Why didn’t you use your tormach and machine a thread?
Don't have to cutter for that.
@@SVSeeker awesome channel btw!
The resolution of the steppers in most 3d printers is 0.1mm, or 0.004". Playing with thousandths is a waste of time. Work in 4s.
I got my first 3d printer 10 years ago. 2 Years ago i got a resin printers. Thats was also the moment my mini cnc table started to collect dust.
Now looking to build me a printer that can print 10 feet model ship hulls in one go. As the wife is getting sick of all the wood dust i make building them the old fashion way.
ya know... I bet that Tormach could thread mill that... (though NPT thread milling does take a considerable amount of math to do correctly.) but a damned site better then yarding on a crescent hammer... (which is how I break taps btw lol) Anyway, I've avoiding the world of 3d printing mostly cause I hates plastics, and the metal versions are very expensive
oh, and is super skookum that yer mostly solar powered, someday... when I have loads of money or fall into a pile of scraped teslas... I'll make an electric log truck...
Yes, it can but I don't have the cutter. As rare as I would use it, I think the pipe taps are fine.
@@SVSeeker single point... make all sorts of different threads with a single cutter... but I gets it, cutters are spensive... Taps that big are a butt kicker to turn by hand though lol.
Skip the q1 go direct to Bambu much better printers
At twice the cost!
@@SVSeeker huh? The p1 is $699 and a1 is $399 how’s that twice the cost? Plus you can do 16 color changes if you add the AMS
@@weldingjunkie Just did a quick search. Look, if you like it great. Go in peace.
@@SVSeeker go in peace? Idk what that means been watching you since Peter and chucky days. Just saying for the same money Bambu has a better printer if folks want to look. Not sure why that’s an issue.
@@weldingjunkie You have both?
I use Autocad, but I bought the last seat ownership. I don't want to subscribe for Autocad.
shit i have had a 3d printer for 7 years your late to the party
I’ve had one for 10. They have certainly improved over the decade.
You are still using your welder, just happens to be a plastic welder. :)
