When I heard this exhibition discussed on radio this morning, I had to find it online. I'm BLOWN AWAY by the sensational Bisa Butler and the products of her artistry. I've never seen anything like these wonderful portrait/quilts and am inspired to see if I could create something similar in crochet, no matter how clumsy the result. The ability to inspire is rare. Thank you, Bisa Butler.
What a blessing Bisa is to the culture of her ancestors, my ancestors. As a new quilter, she has inspired me to create from a deep sense of purpose and love. I am in awh of her work and accomplishments and extremely excited for her growth in the time I have been following her. My birthday gift to myself this year is going to this exhibit which also happens to be in my favorite U.S. city.
I was also, tears of joy, pride and love - this was one of, if not the best exhibitions. I wish it were here longer so I could have brought students to see themselves!!!!
I am so fortunate to have seen this incredible exhibit last month in Chicago. It was beautiful and so powerful. It was wonderful to hear Ms. Butler’s own words just now. Very moving.
I'm just watching the CBS article about you. There are artists, but for you to sew such beautiful photographs into quilt work pieces of such magnificence...Well as far as I know. You are atop the world in that arena... Beautiful...just beautiful.
As a quilter myself I can share that her work is awesome and even more, that these quilts are in a gallery at the AIC- not just in the textile area, which has much less exposure, or in a less well known museum-
Thank you so much! I’m showing this to my great aunt, an old woman who makes quilts as works of art, too. The differences between the two artists could not be more-yet each “found their own soul” as Bisa says here, and produced an item that you can hold in your arms, and it could keep you warm. Bisa’s are more stunning, iconoclastic, unforgettable, I humbly submit.
Absolutely so incredibly moving and beautiful. Bisa Butler, wow! I also felt the spirit of the people in your work. I feel forever changed by spending time with your art in Chicago a few days ago.
I was so lucky to see Bisa's show at my local Katonah Museum of Art. It was astonishing! Bisa is a portraitist first, Artist first, quilting is just the medium of her creative expression (and what an expression that is). xoxoxo LOVE you Bisa!!!
Bisa Butler you are an amazing artist and I hope you can exhibit your work in Montreal. Congratulations with your work your have touched our hearts and make us beleive once more in the arts.
So much appreciation & respect for your talent & what you’ve created that I’m at a loss for words to adequately express. Just incredible! I must see this once we can get out again.
Absolutely stunning and portrayal of history. I am very blessed Prof shared this with us in our old boys meeting of St Charles. He is a very proud Dad! Very well done, Bisa Butler 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

This looks AMAZING. The detail - the person who said they could feel the spirt of the people is right on. I can see that even online. Stunning.
