Tal vs Botvinnik 1960
Moscow
No sooner did Mikhail Botvinnik regain his title, the chess world became entranced by charismatic young Latvian named Mikhail Tal. Tal won the 1958 interzonal tournament at Portoroz, then helped the Soviet Union to retain the Chess Olympiad; before going on to win the 1959 Candidates Tournament with 20 out of 28 points--a point and a half ahead of second place Paul Keres.
Tal often sacrificed material in search for the initiative in chess. With such intuitive sacrifices, he created vast complications, and many masters found it impossible to solve all the problems he created over the board, though deeper post-game analysis found flaws in some of his conceptions. Although this playing style was scorned by ex-World Champion Vasily Smyslov as nothing more than "tricks", Tal convincingly beat every notable grandmaster with his trademark aggression.

Some interesting story including Tal:
A couple days ago I’ve been with my neighbor (about 50 years old man), and he told me that his uncle defeated Tal 3 times. That’s a great achievement, but it’s even greater that his uncle is amateur, so never played chess professionally. He defeated Tal when Tal came to Montenegro(Yugoslavia back then) with GM Bozidar Ivanovic, at Zeta river to be more precise.
djole1996 so did I ,tal needed to work hard didn't he😅
Preet Sanghavi What do you mean by that??
Pretty much nothing, just like game 18
djole1996 sounds like a lie to me for sure
I beat Carlsen on a daily bases! :P
Your videos have rekindled a lost love of chess. At best, I’m a poor amateur, so playing isn’t the best of experiences. However, watching your chess board and listening to your explanations/commentary help me learn and enjoy the beauty of the game. Perhaps after watching the rest of your videos, I’ll learn to better think like a decent chess player. Regardless, thank you for the time and effort you spend creating this wonderful content.
Amen, still terrible on the board but it's just great fun to watch
Indeed, after losing 200 raring in chess.com i start watch all adgamator video too keep exprincing chess
yeeey my brothers, we suck in chess but still enjoying the game
Thanks god im not the only one '.'
Keep in mind while I love this channel, the host is actually not that strong, probably 1900 Elo, and he's no doubt using an engine, as well as often giving bad reasons or trite reasons for the moves suggested by the engine, showing lack of chess understanding. But it's entertaining.
Actually he is using Tal's book for this series.
I have a strong feeling that Botvinnik had a lot more GM's helping him prepare and do adjournment analysis than Tal did.
Tal is only with his Coach Alexander Koblencs if i'm not mistaken
That is actually true
Rigging the matches in the Soviet Union.
Tal had Nezmetdinov in his team so basically sums it up
you're speaking as if Botvinnik wasn't a three-time world champ and the father of soviet chess lol
I ran into and started watching your videos a couple of weeks ago when my love for chess was reignited and I am glad to say that I have improved already. Today I beat my friend - to whom I lost almost exclusively - with a better play style than I ever had and I even found the right move to beat Tal! Thank you for such high quality videos, wish you all the best :)
This is amazing!!! and its is even more amazing to those who have read "Tal-Botvinnik, 1960 by Mikhail Tal" you do capture the essence.
Good job! I am a big Tal's talent fan and it was great to see that series on your channel! Thank you so much
Another great game with another great commentary, thanks agadmator!
So maybe in the future I should consider more silly moves...;-) Every game of this championship was really brilliantly played and Botvinnik obviously had a geat fighting spirit! Many thanks for showing and analysing this game, I learned already a lot watching this channel!
man everday i get home from work and watch the latest episode i just wanted to thanks you! your very active with the uploads too which is a massive pro. your a legend. #ireland
4:25 Why can't Tal just go Nd6 -> Nc4 straight away?
he was drunk :))
lol, even I thought the same when he mentioned that long path, but maybe there is something more than what meets the eye!
I don’t know dude, sure is pretty funny. But actually you would like to first protect the knight with the pawn in b6 and then improve to a protected central square for that knight.
Because he was tal
I think agadmator simply was trolling us lol
love the whole match thing! after you finish I would love to see more historical matches (kasparov vs kramnik for example)
14:54 white wins with pawn with Knight to f3. Black Rook to g4, white King to h3.
I think so too .
#agadmator where is ur silver play button😌
They refuse to send me one :)
Why?
Did you ask them why?
But why😓 u achieved 100k subscribers👏u deserve it man!
Yes, they just reply they're working on it and thank me for my patience. That was a month ago :)
The legend Tal
Since this series started I've bought the Botvinnik Tal book
As a terrible player, I loved that "silly move" Rc6 and your absolute sincere reaction. Love your videos.
Show more of games between Alpha zero and Stockfish. It's amazing to see such a engine.
Heeeeere's Johnny!
Hi agad, can you please make fisher vs spasky series too?
Sure :)
Thanks a lot😁
agadmator's Chess Channel
Good news , don't forget to bring the dog ...
Witchwood hype! The scared worgen under Tal face looks pretty nice
I love chess, but I suck at it. Hopefully I can learn through these videos. Thx!
What a peculiar endgame!
0:00 you scared the shit out of me :D
Hello agadmator, love your channel. I know you’re busy with the Tal v. Botvinnik series but could you consider doing more games with my favorite player, Tigran Petrosian?
Yess agadmator
Best Hello everyone!!
You missed something min 5:44!!!
Tal rookc8 capture white rook with check, then grab the other white rook and game over!
Bruh he couldn't do that because his king was in check lol
Like for The Witchwood!
Fantastic coverage.
I have the book and it's the best chess read I own.
Could you please consider covering another book I own and can recommend :-
Botvinnik - Petrosian The 1963 World chess Championship Match
by Botvinnik himself.
plz cover Petrosian-Botvinnik games.
Are you going to continue the series with another match/ tournament?
Yes, but not right away
Well presented.
Very good boss man.
14:16 rook checks not king..😉
Edit: I know you are going fast but I just thought to correct you...
Yes, first time i found it😂. I won against Tal.
Engines have ruined this game , GM's today have so many lines just calculated by engines that they plaster into their games , Tal and Botvinik are real masters of home preparation
Zephyr Elric Well engines took out some beauty out of it,no more over the board findings and shifts in theory. But i feel Alpha Zero can turn things around and make chess more exciting
Whiners like you will never enjoy anything. People back in Tal's time were whining that analysing chess openings have ruined the game. Besides that if chess was all about rote learning engine moves then we would have a Carlsen coming out of every street.
Kshitij Jhalak chill dude I still enjoy modern chess I am only saying that current players rely on engine calculations too much also , the reason Carlsen is able to overcome other Grandmasters is due to his great endgame skills . Basically anyone with a phone can defeat the world champion that is the issue here
Yep rhis is true,e.g look fabi im really sure his calculate everything with engine, and as u can see his game is draw style or if it is not his game like a blind game (full of engine move)
Lol no, you can't defeat Carlsen or any other WC by memorising your phone engine's moves. Even if you could, then that's just accessibility, how can that be a bad thing ?
At 5:44, why didn't Tal capture both rooks starting with Rxc1+ then after king moves, Rxh1. Wouldn't that win?!
Black was In check. No way to capture the rook without the king capturing the rook.
15:55 why isn't Nf3 winning?
I would play Rg4+, checking the king and protecting the pawn.
but I did not analyze it thoroughly, this is just an idea from the top of my head
Seems like it captures the pawn, but it actually doesn't make any difference, there's not enough material to win.
After Nf3 Rg4+ defends and can also create a perpetual if white tries to be close to kingside
And here we come, The Early Squad!!!
#suggestion Can you make the series of the 1935 championship match between Alekhine and Euwe?
*"King Checks"*
Agadmator’s engine move
#suggestion Would you mind for any possible Alekhin Saga and Botvinnik Saga? 🤓
can we standardize the "hello everyone" for each video? I almost popped my ear drums out. Thank you sir.
#suggestion Can you please upload some interesting games of Rashid nezhmetdinov and/or Raul jose capablanca
what if Botvinik plays knight to f3? both knight and rook pinch the pawn and black rook cannot do nothing to protect it.
#suggestion shirov vs polgar 1994 the polgar immortal
Cover the most exciting Kasparov-Karpov championship
Can u also cover 1961 world chess championship? #suggestion
at 11:00 it's acctualy a simple move, hell a 1566 could find it
Yeesssss i beat tal!!! Except not really
Is it me or does not Botvinnik always seems to make the sealed move
1:01 Bxc3 not bxc3..
What if at move 20 tal captures Rook to c1 giving check and capturing another rook on f1.... Am i missing anything?
Afcourse you are missing
Its Bxe6 +
I mean pawn captures bishop is forced
make dinner or watch this gam??... I'll just eat later
your channel is a lot more fun than you think, I was watching your channel and actually some of my friends were mocking me for that, the exact thing all of them were saying was, "life has more value than wasting it to watch chess games specially the games that have been played decades ago or played by stupid Engines !!!" now guess what :D I just let them to watch one #alpha zero game and now they are addicted to your channel, I think this is the wrong thing with your channel, it is addicccccccccccccccccccccccccccting :D
Maybe Carlsen would never have beat vishy if there were no engines...
I feel that way 🤗
Agadmatal huh? 😎
Wouldn't knight f3 winning in the position they agreed to a draw?
opet I opet nimzo-indian defense.
Why not knight to f3
Finally found the answer to one of the pause the video puzzles christ
Advance the pawn
Funny how in every game they keep talking about prepared this prepared that. And trying to avoid those lines. Its a classical game, whatever anyone prepares, cant world champions simply find an antidote over the board in the course of 7 hours or so.
Hey early squad!
Hey 😅

HA-LLO Everyone!
This video ends in 974 seconds!
IKUZO
I have reached the point in the video where Tal retreats his knight to e8 in the opening. This is so anti-common sense. Black has 0 piece developed, actually he had 1, the knight but now he has brought it back to the last rank, this is not how chess is played, i am pretty sure Tal will lose this game, lets see If I am right, or grandmasters can get away with any moves.
Hi
10:44 "u just beated mikhail tal", bitch u rly think that ME, a 1500 lichess rated player would win against mikhail tal with only one horse of advantage???
HELLO EVERYONE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
M
A total of 21 games were played but Botvinnik managed to win only 2 of them.
First to comment. 😛
