There is a version that was released by CBS in 1964. Written by Rod Serling and sponsored commercial free by Xerox, it is named Carol For A Different Christmas. Not sure if it appeared on your list of 70 different versions but this one was controversial and groundbreaking. It broaches post WW II sentiments in the US at the outset of the counter culture movement. Not easy to watch since it deals with some extremely serious themes, rather heavy handedly actually, but a must see for its historical context and importance. My personal favorite is the 1935 version from England starring Seymour Hicks, Donald Calthrop and Robert Cochran. I will admit my criteria is that it stick to the story. I've actually read the book, more than once. Next I think the George C. Scott version from 1984. It also sticks closely to the original story but Scott is transcendant. When he shows up at Fred's house I cry every time I watch it. Lastly, same as all of you, Muppets. They also stick closely to the original and Michael Caine is unparalleled. Honorable mention to Scrooged, which was a risky venture. Some stories ought not to be retold but they did such a great job. Amazing cast, very funny and enjoyable. Personal anecdote I knew a guy, a real schmuck, not a friend but someone I met in church. He was so egotistical and annoying. He copied the scene when Bill Murray bangs into the door and Karen Allen ends up giving him the nickname lumpy. He would do this to meet girls. It never worked, according to a mutual acquaintance whom he admitted that too.
