cant say enough how important networking is in aviation. i finished flight training in august 2020 when there was no job avail. last year i started with a new company as a flight attendant. i got to know the chief of flight ops and recruiting pilots. now i am waiting for my type rating start for the A320 :) i was interviewed even before guys with jet hours and ratings.
@@kylesweeney929 luck is an important factor for sure. but so is not giving up. i had many assessments and interviews where i didnt get the job. but eventually you will be in the right place at the right time.
I am 2 weeks out from my initial CFI checkride and have 480 or so hours. I've been working at my flight school's front desk for a couple months as well. Not only do I have a spot waiting for me when I pass the ride, but I have a constant stream of pilots coming in so I can try and do some part 91 right seat stuff. I'm also a cadet with a regional and hopefully will have a 121 FO spot waiting for me when I get my ATP. NETWORK LIKE CRAZY AND APPLY EVERYWHERE!!!
Im doing my instructor rating here in Alberta, hoping to find something! Saying hello to everyone is something I wish I did when starting out, and remember their names. You also learn things talking to other people your instructor may miss.
I'm currently doing flight school while working at an FBO and I get to meet many different pilots weather charter or private and get to hear their great stories
Crazy how far being a friendly, inquisitive person can take you! And should probably mention, for the introverts out there, to not to be intimidated to approach people - we’re all aviation nerds haha and more often than not people want to help each other out!
Hey you putting some great content out there! I’m at 400TT and having difficulty find low time pilot jobs I have applied to a lot of positions with no response. But this video is giving me hope to keep on trying
Thanks angel! Honestly, just find some on Insta, and make friends then see if they know anybody at their work… networking 101. Sometimes you gotta do a little smooooooozing and honestly… a beer 🍻 sometimes seals the deal on a new job… or at least a new friendship :)
Agree 100%...i got my first jet gig from working at an FBO here in Australia... Throwing chocks and being helpful to anyone all the time really helped me.
That is the ticket! I was going to mention that the ramp people are usually the ones that have the most networking ability because they handle every airplane. Haha
Probably not a people are gonna read this i never comment on anything: Networking and going out of your way to land a job (work long hours, willing to relocate) are the keys. Landed my first job this summer 7 days after my checkride, right seat in a king air 200. Opportunity that i heard of from talking to a guy i went to high school with. Never talked to him during those years but still messaged him later (knowing he became a pilot) to know if he had any advices or tips. Be willing, be kind to everybody from the fuel guy to the receptionist at the flight school and really go out of your way, you’ll make it happen! Jc

Hi evan , I’m currently working as a nurse and have been thinking about switching careers to become a pilot. I have a few questions I hope you can help with Is it even possible to make such a big career change from nursing to aviation? Is becoming a pilot something that’s realistically achievable, or is it only for people with a lot of financial resources? Are there people who have successfully made this switch and are now working for airlines? Is it a rare path or something that happens more often than people think? Thanks so much for any insights! really looking for yor opinion and help
@@EvanLuft It’s one of my favorite hobbies! I’m currently working on my bachelors in UAS and start my private pilot flight training next week. I admire people who are willing to share their experience and advice with people such as myself. You’ll see some more aviation content soon if you keep an eye on my channel.
All very sound advice; I’d add be willing to accept airport work, even if it’s part time sweeping the hangar floor to give you opportunities to not only meet and expand those networks but get a reputation as a worker, team player etc - you need to stand out for all the right reasons & being in the right place at the right time helps too.
Yes you are correct. Need to be able to somehow build good relationships above the others. But in a way that is doesn’t come across as such. Being friendly and always helping everyone else is a good way
this is my feeble attempt at networking. does anyone know of any opportunities in the central coast california region from santa barbara to bakersfield? professional pilot looking to fly more.
That is not a feeble attempt at all! :) that’s why I make videos so that people like yourself can talk within the community like you are doing, so I think that is great! I’m sure someone seeing this video would be able to provide more advice on the job opportunities in California. :) cheers!!
At 37 I’m really wanting to get into aviation. It’s been a life long dream of mine and I never thought it would be possible. What is the real outlook of me being able to find a starting job that pays what I need to make to still provide for my family?
I’m in a similar situation. I’m 32 with a wife 3 kids and dream of flying. I always thought I was incapable but I’ve been shown how wrong I was! That’s the hard part for me is figuring out how to provide while training and waiting for opportunities. I plan to work as much as possible and side hustle internet jobs for supplemental income.
34 with wife and kid. Doing some research but I plan on starting within the next month or so. If you have savings, good credit, any outside support or willing to work extra hours go for it
Don’t lie on you logbook (paperwork), understand starting at the bottom isn’t a bad thing (be a sponge to learn), don’t sound like you have a world of experience when your ticket is still wet and be friendly (laugh at yourself). Networking is huge day one or day 10,000.
I am doing my multi ifr starting November 1! In the spring I will be out looking for a flying job!! I have 500 hrs TT so I will be able to qualify for a lot of those medivac jobs. Very excited about the future. I live near Toronto.
Awesome! But hey, not downplaying medivac at all because I think it is some of the best "fun" flying around. BUT with 500 hours, you might even want to throw your resume out to a bunch of other corporate gigs. I have a friend that got right seat on a G150 flying all over the world with 350 hours! haha
Great advice and all things that have helped me get the first aviation job. Just finished some low level pipeline inspection. But I have to ask, without an instructor rating, how can I log that multi PIC time that so many potential employers are after?
Thanks! And that’s where the networking helped me. I was offered a job replacement position for a fella that said I was a good pilot. I didn’t have the hour qualifications to be right seat at most jobs, BUT the insurance company didn’t mind and so they hired me because of word from the other Pilot. I was then logging pic in a turboprop twin. Other ways to get experience is the survey work like you’re doing. The PIC time is so important. But maybe shop some lower time required jobs flying caravans!

Hey Ben! Well technically the conquest can be flown with 1 pilot: but to get insured and certified, a pilot should sim for at least 1000 total time and 200 hours or more multi engine. Of course I’ve seen pilots with less hours do really well, but generally speaking… that is a good benchmark
