Jonghyun's song is a cover/rewrite of Alejandro Sanz's "Y si fuera Ella." so most people just call it by its original Spanish title, but Jonghyun's version is called "Hyeya" or"Haeya". Haeya is the girl's name (which I understand translates to "her" or "she") that Jonghyun is singing about that is why it's the only word in the English lyrics that isn't translated because there isn't a translation, it's a name. Jonghyun heard the Spanish song and he and his manager loved it so much that Jonghyun had to make it his own by translating and reworking it into Korean and changing it slightly to make it fit his vision of what the song's message was about. This was one of Jonghyun's most epic and iconic performances of this song. And it will forever be a symbol of what made him such a great artist.
In the performance the explosion you heard was not a gunshot, but it was his heart exploding. He felt so passionately about the girl that his heart literally exploded. The song is about how the girl, Haeya, left him and he is in pain because she is no longer with him. The whole song is him begging her to come back to him. He loves her so much that he is dying from the pain of being seperated from her, etc.
This was Jonghyun's very first solo single and he was only 18 when this song was first released -- only a few months after SHINee's debut in 2008 -- so this just goes to show you how amazing of an artist he really was. (This specific performance was at their SHINee World Concert II in Seoul in 2012, so he is about 22 here.) His mastery of singing, emotion and stage presence is awe inspiring. If he was this good so early in his career, you can see why he has become so highly respected now after more than 10 years in the industry.
Hence, why Jonghyun is known as one of the best singers in the industry, and SHINee are one of the top groups that are known for the fact that they all can do it all. They really are one of the most well rounded groups in Kpop that excel at every aspect of the entertainment industry. It's easy to see why everyone looks up to them.
As you know, Jonghyun was highly respected for his songwriting and composing skills. He was one of the very first Idols to be recognized as a songwriter and he became one of the most prolific songwriters and composers of his generation. He was the first SM Idol to have a fully self-wrote album.
Jonghyun was special, and it's songs like this where you can see how powerfully he felt about everything he did. One of the things that he was known for was the fact that he was full of love and compassion for everyone and everything in this world, and he often wore his heart on his sleeve. When he performed you could feel every emotion flowing from his being. That's what made him such a great singer/songwriter, but it was also what I think caused him to feel so much pain. He took everything so personally, both the good and the bad and he never thought he was good enough. He did so much good in his short 27 years and he left behind a great legacy, however, his time was much too short.
His legacy includes several dozen songs that were wrote and composed by him. It's one of the things that all Shawols hold onto as part the legend that he left behind that we feel is our duty to share with the world in order to keep his memory alive.
He wrote about 40% of SHINee's songs, as well as all of his own solo albums, and several songs for other artists, such as EXO's "Playboy," Lee Hi's "Breathe," IU's "Gloomy Clock" and Taemin's "Pretty Boy" and Already," among others.
He really was one of the greats. People say that when he walked into a room you could feel his star power, and yet he was so humble and down to earth that everyone instantly wanted to be his friend.
You did well Jonghyun, our beautiful angel and diamond in the sky.

Honey I'm so sorry you weren't prepared for this. This happened to me when I watched the first concert the boys did 2 months after jonghyun died the 2018 from now on concert. Four boys five microphones tears and heart ache. I wished I had realized how hard these boys struggled to get through this concert with only the love of shawols to guide them. I think I cried most of the night afterwards and it pains me to have not done some research before. So when you get to this concert just lean to your fans of this channel and hold your heart closely. Thank you so much for this reaction and your heart felt love for 5hinee.

This performance is the same every time- extremely emotional and affecting. For 85% of the song it’s just him and the stage and the emotion in his voice and it just grabs you by the collar and drags you along with him on the emotional journey that he is going on as he talks about his lost love.
You are right, you feel everything that he does - and he was very open and raw for many performances like this one he never hid behind the idol face. The music always showed all of who he was. It will always be a privilege to have watched him, and an honor to now watch him with others.

I have to be prepared every time I watch this one. I know that it will be emotional and have to be in the right frame of mind before hitting start. Warning: From Now On concert will be another one you Need to be prepared for before starting. You will probably want to watch it on your own the first time. I still have only watched the performance of "From Now On" once. I can see the still shot and go, nope not ready. Enjoy all your reactions. Sorry this one took you by surprise. This one is one of Jonghyun's stellar performances. You can not come away from it without feeling something. I do Every time.
I hope you are feeling much better after watching this so unprepared beforehand. All shawols know just how you felt seeing and listening to this song for the first time. This is one of my favourite songs by Jonghyun. His vocal range was an 8 octive high range. And he always expressed his emotions and the things he felt passionate about either in music or his daily life. It's why his loss hit those who love him so hard at that time and why they still do and will always love shinee and him for what he stood for and believed in.
This performance was my first encounter with Jjong and I was blown away by his incredible cover of Y Si Fuera Ella. After that I was down the SHINee rabbit hole in no time.

I was, like you, speechless and choked up when I first saw this. Even now it affects me deeply, every..single.. time. I don't often seek this out to watch, it's usually when someone reacts to it. I've only seen one reactor who was not strongly moved by the performance.
I saw this back in the day and it was amazing but rewatching it now hits different considering where Jonghyun is now.
I feel like I should also say because of the intensity of this performance that we should be careful in drawing a conclusion between his ability as a performer in making us feel the intense emotion of this song and how his own story ended. They are two separate things in my mind. Jonghyun was an excellent performer with limitless ability that he poured out in every single concert he performed in but we have to be very careful not to psychoanalyze and over project our feelings about his passing onto every emotional performance that he gave. (I’m not saying that you are doing this Torsie but I know as soon as this vid comes up everyone Has Opinions.) And I don’t know if this really adds to the discussion of not but that’s just my two cents for what it’s worth. 🙂
I agree, he is performing the lyrics of the song. If we pay attention the song is really dark and intense so he did an intense performance. He said in an interview when he presented Guilty Pleasures that his (guilty pleasure) was to write a song or in this case to perform a song and never reveal the meaning behind it just to see how many conclusions people come up with.
I totally understand what you're saying. I think, no matter what other conclusions one might draw, we can all agree -- he was one hell of a performer. I was trying to get out how astounding his control is - not just vocally, but to perform through his vocal abilities -- to give emphasis and palpable emotion to every note... he was... oof. A rare talent.

His ability to GIVE this kind of performance, which you will never see from someone like, say, Taemin or Minho, is precisely BECAUSE of who he was and how deeply he felt things. You seem to be promoting the idea that this performance is merely an "act," and that the visceral pain we all see and hear bleeding from the screen here goes no deeper than that. I suppose if that makes you feel better; if that helps you distance yourself from the naked, very real pain we all know is right here in his voice/body/soul, then you have the right to do that.
The very best artists bravely and nakedly take their own experiences, be they pain and/or joy, reinterpret it, and present it through a character, a song, a performance, or all three of those things, as Jonghyun did here. Pretending otherwise is odd.
The other song that may be hard is taemins monologue it was written for jonghyun. I think there is just a lyric video but I may be wrong.

Before someone says it. No he did not write it. Kenzie wrote the lyrics, she tried to write itlike the original which is a hopeful song but to write a Spanish song in Korean turned out to be too hard she did this one a song of despair. I prefer the original from Alejandro Sanz.
