  • A number of different variants of the Lockheed Electra were operated in New Zealand in the 1940's.
    This aircraft is a 12a Junior owned by Pat Donovan which was based at Omaka Aerodrome in Blenheim (New Zealand) for several years from 2002. The aircraft is seen here at Omaka just prior to a flight over the stunning Marlborough countryside.

    Thank you for not ruining this video by adding the annoying music. This is a great old airplane and her voice needs to be heard. I flew many loads of Orchids into the states from Mexico City in one of these. I was 21 and it was thrilling each time those big engines barked to life.

    Plane engines starting is one of the coolest sounds there is. I'm having a lot of fun as they rumble on my Venturi 64 speakers. The realism is stunning.

      This aircraft, and it's engines are particularly good for that. Glad you're enjoying it.

      Yeah, it is a pretty impressive sound alright. We're just sad that the aircraft isn't based here in NZ anymore -- she's now back in the USA.

    One flies over my house every once in a while on its way to land at the local airport.
    I don't have to guess. I know exactly who it is flying over.

    I was expecting a lot more smoke at startup!

    • @lesizmor9079
      @lesizmor9079 4 роки тому +1

      Radials only smoke if they've been sitting for some time--- 8 hours or overnight. This plane was out on a taxiway, had been running shortly before the filming.

      @@lesizmor9079 There you are! That's what Dad would've said..He flew Beechcraft 18s, the D and E models. Both had Pratt&Whitney R-985 Wasp Jrs..

    Wasn't the Electra "Sky king's" plane?
    You got to admit , those designers knew how to build with pizzazz.

    • @samburkes7552
      @samburkes7552 3 роки тому

      No sir..Sky King's first airplane on that series was a Cessna UC-78, Bamboo Bomber. Known also as a T-50. Had Jacobs 7-cylinder radial engines on her.

    • @Krajcik1964
      @Krajcik1964 9 років тому +2

      +Thoman von Bremerhaven Yes, it's essentially the one that Amelia flew in her attempt to fly around the world. If i'm not mistaken, hers was modified for extra fuel loading.

      Not exactly; She and Noonan vanished with a Lockheed 10 and this one here is a 12. The 10 was very similar, but the fuselage was distinctly less tall. There is more headroom in a 12 than there was in a 10. Only superficially the same aircraft. Regards from Alaska.

    • @FarmerTed
      @FarmerTed 5 років тому

      Her 10 (Earhart) was also special built for light weight with wider rivet spacing and long range tanks for her special purpose.

    • @samburkes7552

      The Beechcraft mod 18, the famous Twin Beech, was sortof "copied" after the Lockheed 10 & 12. Lot of similarities betw. the two, if you see then side-by-side. Several schools of thought as to whether it was a blatant rip-off by Ted Wells and other designers & engineers fr. Beech Aircraft.

    Lovely old girl, are they similar to the Lodestar, one used to be used in Napier many year ago for top dressing and I believe it crash landed in the sea off the beacons near the airport.

    • @samburkes7552
      @samburkes7552 3 роки тому

      The Lodestar is bigger in profile and planform. Had bigger engines, Wright R-1820 Cyclones, like early DC-3s and the B-17 bomber..
