This made me happy. I went to the guitar store a few weeks ago thinking I would buy either a Martin D-18 or a Gibson SJ200. At the salesperson's suggestion, I shot them out with the Yamaha FG9-M and as you might guess, I preferred the sound of the Yamaha. It was a real surprise to me. They were close but the Yamaha had the richer sound to my hears. And it was less expensive than the other two, so a no-brainer to buy it. Listening to this video, I again preferred the Yamaha.
I chose A, but not by much. Yamaha is some of the best VFM at almost every price point out there...although in this case, it costs $1,000 more than the D-18, so that might factor into my choices.
Wonderful comparison. I leaned into the warmer Martin sound, and I'm a solid Yamaha fan and love what they've done with the two FG9s, both are top drawer instruments. Yet, going with my ears and pocketbook (actually, I don't have one of those, does anyone?), I think the Martin is the better choice given this video.
I like them both. I have played the R and the M FG9 and they are lovely. I also enjoy a nice D18 as well. I have a red label that I'd put up against either one. Guitars have gotten so well made in the last 30 years it's amazing.
I knew the FG9 was A and it had a "fuller" sound. I own a D18 and like it, and a Boucher SG42 (Mahogany) and it is amazing. I would buy a FG9 today! Thanks
I picked A. Sounds fuller and more together, notes are taut and defined - cohesive. Bass notes are tight and strong. B sounds good as well but is a definitively thinner. Yamaha for me.
I was definitely leaning towards A. It sounded more woody and full. Happy to see it was the Yamaha. My only wish is that the headstock had a nice inlay, like the tuning forks.
Both sound nice. I'll stick with my FG5. I can hear differences, but none that I would say are a better or worse quality of sound, just different. Also, different picks are better suited to different guitars and can greatly affect the sound, but that is beyond the scope of this presentation. Great video!
Yamaha has absolutely put themselves back in the game. I had a friend that hated Yamahas. He found a old one that was awesome. He had a guy put martin inlay in the headstock and kept it til he passed. I always ribbed him about it.
Having played a boatload of martins, including some really expensive ones and many standard tier ones, and only one fg9 - I’d take the fg 9 over and Martin. If they were free and I could take my pick of any Martin, I’d get a d45, because I could sell the Martin and buy an FG9 and two other guitars
BulldoggerJK I never hear this from anyone. My own D-18 sounds better than theirs. Strings and different tops can change a lot. For a fair comparison you need the same setup, same strings, same age guitar, etc. doubt that’s the case here

D18s are used for a lot of styles. The difference was negligible in this style. The standard D18 is less expensive than the Yamaha. I've had or played all the big brands. The Yamaha was awesome. So was the Martin.

Didn’t think I would prefer it, but the Yamaha took that one for me!! The D18 sounded thin to me, compared to the FG9.

Do you to India ?? ????? Please respond
The FG9 is the best dreadnought I have ever played.
What is the Eastman equivalant?
That would be an E6D or an E10D except they now only make both of those models thermo cured. The E6 would have a Sitka top like the Martin and the E10 would have Adirondack like the Yamaha.
FG nine is a fraction of the cost.
It’s the audio panned way to the left for you listeners, or am I crazy?
Yes The Fg9 is much better that Martin
The FG9 is more expensive than a standard D-18. They sound the same to me on small computer speakers.
Ehhh, I feel like this tune stayed too much in the mids and highs to show what the Martin can do or be able to tell much of a diff.
Not a fair fight. I have a Yammie FG5 that sounds as good (better to me) than that D-18. This FG9 takes it to the woodshed.
Top end is similiar....FG9 kills it on bottom end. I thought the Yamaha was "A" from the start. Even the L series stuff kills the Martin on bottom end. I was playing with 8 Martins this weekend.
