i went to a pretty fancy private school until sixth grade, and there were no grades. they'd test us and they'd give us reports midyear and end of year, but it would be so hard to get a bad report. you'd have to be /trying/ to get a bad report to get anything even remotely wrong other than "unorganized". anyway, in seventh i moved to a regular public school and the amount of pure SHOCK it was crazy. i had heard this song before but i hadn't really loved it or related to it so it wasn't on any of my playlists. I remembered it and i did a whole google search research and it took me half an hour to find this song again. now it's my favorite song because it's too relatable.

what i hate about schools is that they expect us to be perfect. if we get bad grades they suspend us, if we don't behave well they suspend us, if we don't give 3 sheets of math homework in one week paired with many more pieces of other subjects in time, they put our grades down. you are pressured to be the best, and if you aren't you are classified as a "lazy dumb person". we have our lives and want to have fun.
don't let schoolwork crush your dreams.

They forgot but they also had it better, for example, in my country the final exam for high schools features 2/3 written exams and a final spoken exam, talking about the spoken exam, as of right now we can't prepare a presentation with a topic to talk about (which connects to other subjects), but we'll have to connect a random topic we'll get on the same day.
My parents could choose which subject to bring for the spoken exam, but still, no presentation about a topic, but they had to talk about 2/3 subjects maximum, but they had all the school year to prepare
And they most likely forgot everything, for example whenever I ask for help in math they don't remember or also, I haven't done any biology related classes on 2/3 years.. And I somewhat forgot a big chunk of stuff, except the things I actually cared about.

I wish schools would stop calling certain kids "gifted" or "special" just because they're able to comprehend basic subjects a little more quickly and easily than the rest of their peers. Because all that did was make me afraid of failure ever since the first grade, when I got an S on my weekly report for "Satisfactory" instead of the E for "Excellent" like I'd usually always gotten. I was so in denial about it, that I took some Wite-Out, went over the S, and changed it to an E before crying to my parents because I felt bad about lying. Not to mention the fact that they never consistently challenged us with harder work. In 4th grade, while everyone else was practicing their math, my teacher had me and the other "smart" kids go in the hallway to build toothpick bridges. Why? Other than to give us something to do, I'm still not sure.

I'm not sure if it's just me looking to deep into things, but I notice that in each of the "can you..." lyrics, the first set is asking about your ability to participate in class (read the blackboard, solve the question, say the area of formula), then the second set is actually asking from the student's/listener's POV (read his mind, see his lost fantasy, stop the rope from hanging him from his neck, scream the dreams you swore would never go out). It feels like even the order of the lyrics is reinforcing the idea that schools see success as more important than the students' wellbeing. Again, maybe I'm looking to far into things.

I DESPISE the education system, for so many reasons.
When I was in third grade, I was screaming and crying to my parents about how bad I wanting to drop out, IN THIRD GRADE, because of all the pressure the teachers put on me. But, no, they really said, "your education matters more than your emotions." Sure, I was extremely gifted in reading, language, that stuff, but everything else was hell for me. Instead of the teachers helping me with my horrible grades, they humiliated me in front of my whole class, including my "friends." It didn't help that they watched the people who were supposed to be my friends laugh at me, slam my head into the ground, give me bloody noses, break my arm, fracture my ankle, and just hurt me in every way possible. I was also horrible in P.E, and the teacher said she was just "trying to motivate me," when she told me repeatedly how useless and weak I was. By the time I was in fifth grade, my parents had to stop me from purposely overdosing on my medicine, and then proceeded to lecture me about how bad of a crybaby I was, and that I would never be successful. The next day, I failed my math test, and that just made everything even worse. It was appearently "my fault, because I stayed up all night playing video games," when, in reality, I was up all night studying until I could barely see. But, no, of course, I wasn't doing anything except for being useless.
We REALLY need to make better changes to the school system.

@@furkangundogdu7766 And untrue. To be "grown up" is to be "mature". Now you might think that means being stoic no matter what but that is simply not the case. To be mature is to be self sufficient enough to no longer need your parents constant care and to be able to take responsibility for yourself, your actions and possibly others (pets, kids and such). Beyond that of course we have societal norms still but nowhere near as strict as defined here.
In essence, to be an adult all you need is to take the adequate amount of responsibility within your personal and professional life. Beyond that your duty is only to try to live in a way to try to be happy instead of bearing a mask and wallow in solitude.

_It kind of hurts that I can honestly stick to the line "It's not like I care now" because when I was little, I REALLY cared. I wanted so desperately to go to my first day of school when I was 5. It was the happiest day of my life. I was gonna be a doctor and take care of my family and everything!_
    _Then middle school came..._
_I just... slowly lost interest. And it wasn't out of laziness! I just felt like I wasn't doing enough (even though I definitely was). By eighth grade, I was probably only passing english because my teacher pitied the girl who went from bringing a mug to class for laughs to a hard worker to a workaholic to just crying at her desk every day._
_Then by high school, I couldn't really bring myself to strive for an A+. But being the fucking slut I am for misery, I took eight classes and a couple clubs. I started getting a kick out of making some of my teachers miserable if they made me miserable. I only did work that entertained me or felt necessary. I just wanted to go to my clubs and elective classes and go the hell home already._
_There was a time when a C would make me burst into tears. Nowadays, a C feels like a victory. And I KNOW it shouldn't be like that._
_And I look at these comments and I just wonder _*_"What in the fuck happened to all of us?"_*

I got straight As in elementary, and in middle school.
And now, I'm in High school. And I just... Lost all interest.
I don't want to become an architect anymore. I lost contact with my friends from elementary and middle school. I just feel... Numb.

Too much happened. The cruelty of others against others who are different. When i was young i wanted to make things that would change the world. Inventions that would help people. Bring the world into our own hands and live in a harmonious age when we never had to fear what someone thought as we were all equal. I got good grades when I was young. Now i'm satisfied with a bare pass. Unfortunately that is the process that people call "Growing up" in our society. We're kicked down and kept down, no matter what we do. So it became easier to just give up. However, my spark has been reignited by the good people I have around me. Now I may not have the technological and engineering know-how to make the things I dreamed of as a kid. That won't stop me from making virtual worlds where people can truly be free to live as they see fit. I've found my spark and reignited the fires in my heart to change the world. I hope that you guys can reignite your spark. I'll work hard to help however I can, even if we never meet or speak directly. You can bet that one day, if our paths ever cross again, I'll help. Do those reading this, never lose your spark for good. If you feel like you have, I hope even this random comment in the comment section of a music video will help you get it back.

School just doesn't care about their students anymore, they only care about our grades. Not our mental health, not our feelings, but how we're doing in school. Ever come to the conclusion that we're failing because school makes us depressed, anxious, and tired? We slave doing our work, just to get a passing grade so our parents aren't disappointed in us. They set standards, and that's stressful. You either pass or fail, no in between. It's stressful. But guess what? We have no say in it, we're all just children attending school. We have no say in any of it. Sadly, nothing will ever change, and the school system will stay corrupt no matter how hard we push our points.

"Can you even scream the dreams you swore would never go out? Who was the one who let my hopes just curl up and die?" Those lines hit me the hardest.
Growing up, I wasn't sure what I wanted to be. I finally decided to become an engineer in late elementary/early middle school (4th-6th grade). That's when I discovered my secret talent and love for art. I drew a lot and decided I would become an artist since I loved it so much. However, everyone around me kept telling me to have a backup plan because not everyone can become an artist/animator. Well, I was a straight A student all throughout elementary school. Well, middle school came, and I started to get more B's and got my first C at the end of 6th grade. I couldn't help but cry, even though my parents were still proud of me. I managed to maintain my A's and B's for the next 2 years, but all my A's were just because my teachers didn't give much work, and even then they were only a few points away from a B. 8th grade year comes. I have friends, but start having major family problems. I still maintain my grades, but I'm starting to slack off and procrastinate more. Now I'm 4 weeks into high school, freshman year (yes, I'm a freshman, I know how young I am). I'm stressed barely maintaining the A's I have, one-three points away from getting a B in several classes. There is more and more pressure being put on me to make good grades so I can get a scholarship to college because my family is broke. Wait, what about drawing? My art? I haven't been inspired to draw in probably a year now. Yeah, I've drawn a little bit here and there, but before, I used to draw all the time. I used to draw every day, constantly coming up with ideas. Now? I have no inspiration. I want to, but I never know what to draw or how to draw it. I'm also at a loss for what I want to do with my life. I have to go to college in 4 years, but I have no idea what I want to do with my life. "You have plenty of time!" Oh? Then why is everyone still pressuring me to get to college? To decide what I want to do with my life? Why am I pressured with all this when I have "so much time" to think about it?
They say to enjoy your childhood, but how am I when school takes up half of my day and determines what I'll do in life? By the time kids realize they should enjoy the freedom they have, it's already too late. They're already trapped with schoolwork.
    Sorry for the rant :')
Edit: wow, i never saw how many likes and replies this got. Its depressing how many people have to go through this sort of thing. Also its a year later and I still don't know what i'm doing with my life :')

Have you ever cried on a blank paper? The feeling that the pen in your hand weighs heavier than before? You took deep breaths trying to drown useless thoughts. That a cold chill just ran through your skin at the thought that you would fail? That even how hard you try you just can't find the answer.
Yet you grit your teeth and press on. Finishing your work is the most important thing. You can't fail this subject at any cost. Even if that stabbing pain in your chest as you continue sitting there for hours unmoving or that pain in your head caused by those little voices that urges you to stop. Counting how many hours or days you have left making you vomit due to stress and keeps you awake for hours at night.
School made me hate myself. Expectations made me wish I could just hide under the Earth never to be seen again.
    Education.....
Education doesn't exist. It's just competition. We go to school to compete to kids our age. Compete for a mere recognition. In the end, what good are we than robots programmed to do certain actions dictated to us?
    Yet we still press on.

Do you know what all those kids want to be famous when they’re younger and then when they have to and they get older they have to settle for a fast food restaurant employee because they don’t have enough money to stable their home in their house because of school and their dreams become a distant memory from them and it sucks a lot. So I feel like school should prepare us on what we want to do with our lives. Because someone like me that want to become a voice actor is going to need help. And everyone keeps on telling me “you’re going to have to know another voice actor if you want to become a voice actor yourself then it becomes way easier to get into the business” yada yada yada. I think if I get a role in a video game a popular one to be exact like sonic or something. Then that will be my first step into the voice acting career.

Once a summer school teacher yelled at me because I was complaining, calmly and in a monotone voice, my argument that school has a negative impact on me and many others and that things should change or we shouldn’t have to go. She started YELLING at the top of her lungs saying I was lucky to be educated at all as a woman, and that I should calm down. Um...quality matters more than quantity, and we lived in America sooo...not like girls weren’t allowed in schools at all. Half my teachers and fellow students were women, but that means nada if we all wanna die and the employees are treated as expendable trash.

To me this song represents how as you get older and more condemned by society's idea of "individualism." Notice how the paper is blank and white. White symbolizes innocence and the paper means a "blank" expression. Because in schools we're told from the moment we're young to be "whatever we wanna be" and then as we get older we're told "you need to do this to be successful" which completely drains the human mind into asking "what is growing up and when will I be?" Meaning when are we gonna just be adults and skip this strict system of depression and loneliness? When can I be myself? When will I be free? Blank expressions is the concept of losing ourselves and the breaking down scene in this song is how we feel on the inside but in this education system, you do what you're told. You are told how to live. You lose your own personality and lose the joy of living.
I've seen school do this to people. It's done that to me. It's depressing.

What hits the hardest to me is "and again hypnotically swimming through time" as it feels like im trying to juggle so many tasks at once that i need to stop thinking about anything other than work which leads me to feel like im in a trance of just hitting the keyboard key by key over and over day by day and it starts to make one think of a day as just a part of a set rather than a new experience and it leads to more work and less enjoyment which leads to less enjoyment and less enjoyment and less enjoyment and less enjoyment until i start to avoid thinking about anything by working harder to have less time to think about how little enjoyment im having which leads to more work which leads to more work which leads to more work which leads to more work which leads to more work which leads to trying to avoid work by focusing on enjoyment which leads to more stress due to avoiding the work which leads to less enjoyment which leads to less enjoyment in an infinite loop which self deprecates like an endless trance of self destruction like how when you are swimming forwards like you do in the game of life you just do one stroke at a time, over, and over, and over which you cant escape and even this comment feels like im just typing out words to fit this subject well like i have been trained in school hey can you tell ive been revising this over and over and over and over from my original draft? can you? can you? well i have originally there were some typo's and it was many (edited) pages of just pure walls (edited) but over the course of an hour i have been typing and typing (edited 2x (even this edited sign was edited)) this work into a more refined work (edited). Can you see how much we try to correct our minor mistakes because how we have been trained? in a few sentences i have edited 10 words. (Full edit starts here) This is also linked to the rising suicide and shooting rates as when people are pushed to the brink they take drastic measures which can be for them to end all the suffering or to cause suffering to other people in an awful exchange which just leads to more problems. Have you ever been so frustrated with something you just wanted to scream or destroy/change/stop something? Just listening to this music and writing this comment makes me want to somehow destroy the school system.

Once a teacher told the class to humiliate me for forgetting something, let my classmates prod me with the scissors at our tables, then after begging them to stop multiple times, when I said “if I had something sharp I bet you wouldn’t be doing that”, the teacher immediately sent me to the deans with a fake sincere apology saying I was a threat to the school.
I am autistic and was a good kid so I was melting down having no idea what would happen. The police checked my bag and found nothing, of course. I begged the dean to forgive me and told him I couldn’t escape the situation as I was in a crowded portable (if you don’t know what that is, they’re like cheap trailer classrooms) with no way to get to a door.
The teacher kept her job by the way. All she did was give me a half hearted apology. My mom apparently ripped her a new one while I wasn’t in the room, but when she talked to me she never said anything supportive. My mom told me about how I could get arrested if I accidentally said stuff like that, and tried to blame a naruto poster in my room for having a sharp object on it like it gave me the idea.
I got detention for the first and only time in my school career, and when the detention proctor heard what happened, he told me it wasn’t my fault, and that teacher should’ve done something. I started crying because never had anyone told me explicitly something wasn’t my fault before. He let me just chill for my detention.
There are good people in the system, but overall they’re few and far between. The school system... it’s shitty towards everyone, especially kids with disabilities.

I was marked a gifted child and had it drilled into my head early on that if I made mistakes or asked questions, it meant I was a failure. Gifted kids were held up to the expectation of being perfect students who never needed input from teachers. Now I'm sitting here in college failing more classes than I can count and too scared to reach for help because of the perfectionist mindset I was forced into. And yet here I am studying to be a teacher because I wasted so much of my childhood on school that I have no life outside of it.

And no, it's not for the reason of being work or teachers or anything like that, it is just how everyone is so quick to judge. They want you to measure up to society's expectations. And that is truly horrible.
I'm that one girl who is always invisible because I don't meet what the society wants.
And, I honestly don't care what they think. It's just, school is like a place of misery sometimes, and the only reason why I want to stay home so much is because I want to be alone and away from society.

Feel it cutting into me the the doubting painful knife
Feel it deepening the rift finally hit just right
Couldn't take the love I had so weak and burning low
But it grew into a weapon only hurting me
    This I know... is Non-fiction
So good with number, science, math I like But I'm terrible at English so I despise
This part of me that wants a simple right or wrong
And I feel that everything I chose will always be false
    And today
    This homework
    About me
    A blank sheet
    Accomplished
    Content with
This life I Will now live
'Til I think, Why are we Just sometimes, No always
Saying how we're sad and Saying how we're lonely?
Can you even read the blackboard, written clear as can be?
Can you even read his mind?
    See that kid's lost fantasy?
Can you even find the one who dyed his red heart to black?
    Hey, who could it be?
    HEY SOMEONE TELL ME!!
Can you even solve the question with your abacus yet?
Can you even stop the rope from hanging him by his neck?
Did we really choose it right
    Saying we're okay this way?
    Hey, just tell me how
It's not like I care now
Counting days like numbers, they all pass their prime
And again, hypnotically Swimming through time
Behind the power and guards I put up I hide...
    Knowing they had long died
    From problems
    My resolve
    Just can't solve
    That homework
    Accomplished
    Content with
This life I Will now live
'Til I think And he speaks
    That demon Inside us
    Saying "Let me just leave"
    Saying "Someone kill me!"
Can you even read the blackboard, written clear as can be?
Can you even read his mind?
    See that kid's lost fantasy?

    HEY, JUST TELL ME HOW!
Can you even say the formula of area now?
Can you even scream the dreams you swore would never go out?
Who was the one who let my hopes just curl up and die?
    Hey, who could it be?
    NO, IT'S GOTTA BE!!
Just open up your eyes, why don't you grow up and see?
But what the hell is "growing up" and tell me when will I be?!

"Just tell me how, it's not like I care now!" Is probably my favorite line from this song. The entire song is relatable, but I often find myself just forgetting things I learn in school, especially things related to English, like writing. I forget it, because I don't really care.

I failed a pop quiz on history and the teacher decided to punish me by singing in front of the whole class, and I sang this! My teacher said nothing once I was done while some of my classmates were cheering XD BWAHAHAHAHAHA

Just pulled on a thread on the algorithm that led me back to this song. A decade ago now, when I first heard it, it felt like finally someone had seen into what I was experiencing in my final years of high school, forcefully ripped those emotions out of my chest, and put them into musical form. Lost, abandoned, having to try to put together the pieces of "who am I?" without even the beginnings of the tools to do so, and no one around that I could really ask for help in doing so. I literally had to write an essay about my life story and I just wrote the most cliche narrative rather than anything that felt like me to me, because I had no idea of what was actually truly me back then, and no safe place to explore it or vent it. I felt trapped, hopeless, that it would be a shock if I made it to 20, let alone still be around come 30. "But what the hell is 'growing up,' and tell me when will I be?" This song was cathartic, a scream into the abyss.
And then, well, life happened, I rolled with the punches, sometimes better than others, and while I tried to keep track with this song as I hopped between music services, archives and devices, eventually it just kinda... got missed and faded. I'd still think about it sometimes, stumble on the backup I had on my computer that I no longer used for music listening, but never really got to properly re-experience it. But then today I tugged on that thread and wound up back here, and just got to feel it again. And... the song isn't staring into my very soul anymore. It's relatable, still, yes, but... I've grown up. I know who I am, I know what my dreams and goals are, I no longer wish to stop existing, I have things and people to live for. Hell, I even have a girlfriend now, something that 17 year old me thought was an unrealistic fantasy, falling in love again and having someone think I'm worthy of that love. I'm so much more in touch with my emotions than the me of a decade ago who tried to smother them because emotions seemed to lead to harm and pain, and... I can be happy. I can actually laugh honestly now.
I no longer hear this song and scream along with it. Instead, I hear it and I mourn. For the past me, who dealt with the weight of the world and crushing loneliness and inescapable failure, and for everyone else who also heard this song and felt seen. Because life shouldn't have to be that way, no one deserves to have to feel that way, no one should have to feel so broken, torn, and alone. But at the same time... I hear this song and I see how much I've grown in the past 10 years. I made it. I've done what I thought was impossible, and made it to the other side. I still struggle, no day is a cakewalk and I definitely have seasons where I regress back into the darkness and numbness. And this past decade has not been easy, by any means; the growth was slow and painful and disjointed. But for anyone who's made it this far in my weird rambling trip down memory lane (if anyone is even still reading), for anyone who still hears this song and needs to scream and rage alongside it, I know what it's like. I see you. But I also know it can get better. Scream, cry, let it out, feel the emotion and let it light a fire in you. Tell that fire "I am the master of my fate" and *choose* who you will grow up as, what values you will live and what virtues you will exemplify. It's not easy, but I know you can make it. You're stubborn, and you're stronger than you know. Your story is nonfiction, but you get to write it yourself, page by page.

this song has been helping me get through 7th grade. everyday at school I've been singing these lyrics in my head, humming it, screaming it out loud, listening to it when I'm aloud to listen to music. This song really does explain how messed up school is. it puts us through pain, depression, bullying, self harm, and then at one point..... maybe even suicide.

    • @Calaban-rt6wl

Someone I know has already gone through that. While I'm not exactly sure what it was, I'm 98.7% sure it was school. He is now self-conscious about scars on his wrists that school essentially forced him to do. He went to the point of looking up drugs to overdose on, and when that failed, he tried to learn how to tie a noose. I know what it's like to have someone who's gone through that. And I'm not religious, but I hope to God that I can power through High School, without this stuff happening. And fyi, yes, that someone is still alive. He was able to get help, and I would like to think that I'm a part of the reason he didn't commit suicide.

@@Calaban-rt6wl I'm so glad he's ok, I'm now in seventh grade and I was bakeracted on like my I think second week(maybe first) of school because the bullying already resumed from where it was. But the person who was one if the problems was changed out of all four of my classes (if only I could get the other three out of the few classes they have with me)
