The Salomon Speedcross 5 is on tap for today’s running shoe review. I got my hands on this shoe about two weeks ago, and immediately realized this is going to be a key player in the 2019 trail running line up. The Salomon Speedcross 5 is simply a get up and attack type running shoe. As the miles have gone on in the month of January, I’ve come to realize that uphill running is going to be a big part of my 2019 training line up, even in the snow. With a vertical kilometer race coming up in March, the uphill running and snow running here in Colorado is very important, and the performance of the Salomon Speedcross 5 is matching the test. Uphill running is so fun, especially when you have a well thought out lug pattern and outsole design. Right now, I’m torn between what is my favorite part of the Salomon Speedcross 5, the upper or the outsole? Stay tuned for many more videos on this incredible running shoe! And yes, I gave it an 8.5 out of 10.

I don’t know what’s more impressive....the speed at which you are negotiating the down hill, or the masterful selfie stick manipulation.

It took that comment to make me think how true that is how did he keep that camera like that?
@@SethJamesDeMoor
Old follow up comment...been running the Speedcross 4’s religiously over a deployment and countless trail miles, they are simply the best all around trail shoe money can buy. Need to get with the times and get myself into the 5’s. Great content as always Seth, keep them coming.
Confidence!! WOW--the wind!! You still need to publish the coffee table version on all of the beautiful scenic God-made views. Just a quick something to add. Wednesday started out horrible. I had to go one place only be sent to go to another. Many other little disasters happened. So, I go into Ingles grocery store, where they have a Starbucks. I preceded to order. I had a discussion with the young guy about why I'd be glad when all these Valentine Day's things are gone. He asked why I didn't like V-day. I told him that my ex husband of 30 years he married close to V-day. As I was checking out, this guy came up to me with a heart full of candy.----I CRIED!! He had ran at least half of the store just to reach me. Thank you to all who do the smallest things that make more of an import than you'll ever know. Be Thankful !! God bless!!
I love my speed cross shoes. I have been buying these for 5+ years now with no issues. I run on a variation of gravel, big wet rocks, mud small hills and these Speedcross’s have never let me down.
Based on your videos I’m picking up a pair. I’m sold.
Finally, an honest review by a real user.
I totally diss YT that unbox and say how pretty the shoe is. No user credibility.
You are solid, man.
Hey Seth...I was always a little sceptical of the speedcross 4, many runners were complaining of the narrow footbox. I asked around and heard that in the speedcross 5 that problem was fixed (which you basically validated in your review)...so I went and bought a pair! I'm doing my 3rd 10km trail in them tomorrow morning and I am loving them so far! By a long way the best trail shoes I have ever worn!
Strongs for Pikes Peak tomorrow, good luck!
I like how you emphasize and repeat important points of your review💯
Just ordered a pair of the all reds from the Salomon site for $106 after watching this video. I’m new to trail running and from everything I’ve seen I should love these. Great informative video👍🏻
I just started running in this shoe...love it. Arizona Mountains don't stand a chance. Thanks so much for all you do!
For wet and muddy conditions I like to wear the Altra King MT 1.5, the have a very aggressive outsole with a vibram grip. The only bad thing about them is that the upper mesh of the shoe doesn't last. I put 200 miles on mine, including a 50k and the upper is done.
P.S. Good video Seth! I enjoy watching your shoe reviews and I like that you put 50 miles on a shoe before submitting a review.
Thanks Andrew! Good to know about that Altra. Is that the most aggressive outsole from Altra? I’m not as familiar with their line up which continues to grow and grow.
I love how well you explain everything! Thanks!
Seth i know i'm a little late, but i loved this review. Trully Amazing!!! I totally agree..i only want to give you some more infos. 1)The outsole is called C o n t a g r i p and also 2) the heel cup was made this way for more secure fit in your heel, especially in downhill fast runs!!! Love your work, keep going and good luck!!!
@Seth James DeMoor Great review. Thank you. I haven't seen the 5 in GTX (Gore-Tex) yet. I think once those are released you won't have to worry about that water you felt coming thru in the toe box. Also that stiffness in the four may be due in part to the GTX lining. I've noticed a pretty significant difference when I were any of Salomon's shoes with GTX vs without.
Great series on the 5 so far. I found you while trying to decide if I should upgrade. Based on what I'm seeing from your vids, it would be a good move for me. Thank you. I've been wearing the Speedcross since the 3. I daily wear and do some lite hiking in the XA Pro and more aggressive hiking in the Quest 4D 3.
I am new to running and a new subscriber to your channel as well. I have to say, I absolutely love you videos. Very informative for someone new to running as I am. Keep up the good work.
Well, I feel confident in my purchase today. They fit like a glove!
Confidence is the word for trail shoes!! Great review! QOD: Hoka Speedboat 2- The vibrate sole has got GRIP!!!!!
nice andrew! Vibram for the win
@@SethJamesDeMoor Yes, Vibram not Vibrate! Jeepers! Darned auto incorrect!
This is the best review on speed cross 5!!!
I'm from the Lake District, UK and we certainly have a lot of muddy conditions here. On the start line of a fell race here you'll typically see something like 80% of people with Inov8 shoes are on their feet (and with good reason). Mudclaws or X-Talons are the popular choice for sloppy conditions. Having said that I'm personally loving the Hoka EVO Jawz due to their light weight & aggressive outsole with Vibram MegaGrip. VJ XTRM are also worth checking out for their excellent grip also.
RICHY!!! Thank you so much for this comment. I want to get my hands on a pair of Mudclaws so bad!
And yes, I would love to come run a fell race!
QOD:
Speedcroos 4 (GTX)
The GoreTex is just amazing in rain and mudd, but its so warm on the feets in warm weather!
Yes sir! Good choice.
Have +500 miles on one pair of these and another on the way. Best trail shoe i've ever owned, hands down. Durability, fit and traction are superb. If you have wide feet be sure to order the wide version, these are a bit narrow imo.
Love it. Still got a lot of life left in my 4's but these will be on the wishlist for afterwards
Nice Stuart! Love my 4s as well!
Confidence. Confidence. Confidence.
Confidence / my first and only trail shoe is the speedcross 3, which doesn't get used a lot, but I do love when I get a chance to run in them.
My go to shoe in very muddy conditions is the Walsh PB Elite. Similar to the innov8 mudclaw bit doesn’t clog with mud and are lighter. They are handmade too in the UK
That’s awesome, I wish I could try Walsh, someday!
I was looking at these at an awesome price on Amazon for $94 Size 13 for my big ogre feet. But they Sold out on me when I was ready to pull the trigger.
I ended up going with another solid brand & spent a lil more on a Pair of Merrell's Moab Speed GORE-TEX.
They were a lil more at $128 with a 20% from $160. They arrive on Wednesday.
If I catch these on another sale I may scoop them up before they sell out again they look really good.
I also buy a lesser expensive shoe from Sketchers as an everyday work shoe.
Sketchers Go Run Trail Altitude for $55-75 on Zappos. It's a Very light weight shoe imo and the goga mat insole feels like you're running on a cloud.
Even in NYC you have access to some great trails.. well.. just outside of NYC is woodsy.. there are trails in long Island too.
Would you suggest this or any specific shoe for hiking in Utah’s deserts?! I’ll be hiking angels landing and Zion National parks “the narrows” which is a rocky watery canyon. Please offer me your best solution because last year I was miserable hiking in Moab Utah in Nike’s! 😭😂
Still my favorite video
I own two trail shoes: the Hoka One One Speedgoat 4 and the Inov-8 Mudclaw 300. I use the Speedgoat for rocky/slightly muddy terrain - it's my favourite shoe out of all of my running shoes. However, for heavy muddy conditions like we have here in the Netherlands I use the Inov-8's. I've actually only used the Speedgoat's abroad (e.g. in the the Alps and Pyrenees) because we don't have mountains here haha. But I do love trail running even though there aren't any dedicated marked trails in my area. I just run off-road through the meadows with the Mudclaw's - that's fun too!
QOD: Speedcross 4! Loving it!
can you run on tar? on grass?
did anyone size down with these? reviews on altitude say they fit really big.
I switch between the Hoka Evo Mafate and Inov8 Mudclaw G 260, Hoka for drier conditions and Inov8 for wet, muddy and snow, Inov8 Arctic Claw for really icy runs
Thanks for the enthusiastic review! My takeaway...confidence! :)
Confidence. I really like my Altra Lone Peaks. For me being close to the ground (zero drop) really helps with stability.
Nice! I still need to try these on the trails.
Just got some Scott Supertrac Ultra RC's so far so good, plenty of grip and cushioning for me. 👍
I’m jealous 👍🏻👟👟
I like the 5, but I like the feel of the 4 way better. The 5 is just a little to bulky and heavier.
If they took the new tread, higher back collar and put it on the speedcross 4, it would be a perfect combination.
I tried doing Salomon's but they were just a little too narrow on my feet. 10mm is a lot. The shoe sounds amazing...I may have to give it another try. Brooks with hex screws!
10mm is a lot, its definitely nice for the steep hills. I heard the Speedcross 5 will come out in a wide version in the fall, 2019.
Its is said that the Speedcross 5 because of the design and the new materials will fit wider feet too. I dont even have wide feet and i wanted to buy a Speedcross 4 and my size was so tight and narrow and one size up was a little to big. I wanted them for hiking or when outdoors on mountains.
I just picked up a pair. I can't wait to dig into some dirt.
My go to shoes for the UK Fells are La Sportiva Mutant. Wide fit, wrapped tongue and amazing grip. Very similar to Salomon but last much longer
Now it’s SpeedCross and Altra. You inspire me to try different shoes
Inov-8 Xtalon 200 for mud, snow, or anything loose. Also a fan of Salming - definitely give them a shot.
Any experience in the Mudclaw Mark?
Seth James DeMoor No personal experience in the Mudclaw yet... very soon, though :)
James, how non-gtx version was holding up in snowy condition? if running in snow or wet grass do they get soaked fast? Can't deicide gtx or non-gtx :/
Confidence!
QD: It's gotta be my Speedcross 4's! They aren't worn enough to get me to buy 5's yet, but as long as they keep making them in a wide size I'm all over them!
Boom!
My go to Salomon sense pro, not great in mud, but rockery ascent and descent they are great. Never fell once, which has not been the case in other trail shoes. Sense pro 3 is really SLAB 6 soft ground at $60 cheaper, heard they are great. Sense ride are good for road to trails and can handle everything but the worst. Review the sense pro 3
Five years later and I just bought this on sale at my local store.
That’s incredible that you found a pair!
I know!!
Confidence! Altra Lone Peak 4 - love the feel - the stone guard has been great on some of the really hard rocky NE trails and grippy in the mud here as well
Nice Kurt, thanks for the insight. Need to try!
I don't know if you ever heard of this brand, Kalenji Trail Race 4. Bought it off Decathlon Store. Perfect for trail races in my country, Malaysia. Dry, wet, muddy, river crossing, raining etc...check it out!
Zawir, this is crazy, I've never heard of Kalenji. I just looked up the shoe, and they look awesome! Thanks for sharing, looks like a UK company?
@@SethJamesDeMoor I think the Decathlon Store (or Company) is a UK based co. But I honestly not sure myself about the Kalenji brand. I couldn't find any youtube (in English) review before bought it but lucky me, the sales person in my local store was knowledgeable enough to explain to me the different model for the Kalenji Trail shoes and what types of trail each model suits. AND it is awesome for it's not-too-expensive kind of shoes that performed well in those conditions!
Decathlon is based in France. Discount athletic wear & gear. I purchase a medium weight rain jacket for $45 US! Love it, seam sealed & tons of reflective trim for dark running!👍
Fascinating!! So much to learn about the European market.
having friends doing orineteering (which means: really cross country), they use INOV-8 Oroc and Icebug Spirit: I personally use Salomon Speedcross (4) GTX, but on ice and snow, I prefer the Icebug.
Amazing Josef!! I would LOVE to try the Icebugs! Thanks for sharing about your experience in these shoes.
Great review. I was jussst about to pick up the Speedcross 4.
Love the 5! I hope they work for you in the mud and hills.
I really enjoy your attitude.
Ordered them this weekend. Thanks you!
You mentioned to possibly use campsaver when ordering these. I’ve seen some pretty negative reviews on ordering through them. Have you had any issues when ordering through thenm?
Seth. Love the channel. Great content. Would you recommend the Speedcross 5 for a 5K Spartan sprint race? Or do you have other trail runner recommendations that might be better for this type of technical short race? Keep up the great work.
Great vid seth
Excellent review Seth, certainly a shoe that I might pick up in the future. To be honest I don’t have a great shoe for very muddy conditions, my 2 trail shoes are the Lone Peak 3.5 and the Superior 3.0. At the moment I use the superior for wet conditions, because the Lone Peak is terrible for this, but the superior isn’t great either in my opinion. Might have to check out Some alternatives. :)
Love this shoe. Bought it used at REI garage sale in Manhattan Beach 65 bucks.
Hi Seth. You mentioned water ingress on the shoes. Whats your opinion of waterproof socks like the Sealskinz ? I use them for golf but am thinking of trying them this winter in my Salomons.
How does the fabric and material hold up on rocky slopes, scree, dense alders? I like the cool look of the Speedcross series of Salomon but I blow out the material on the inner ball of the shoe on all my pairs. I had to use duct tape to patch the holes on all of my shoes when I started running out here. You said the material is lighter so does that mean it's weaker than the 4's? I run in the Brooks Range in De Long Mountain Range in Alaska and "bomb" down mountains without trails and literally feel like I'm going to rip the material from the sole on descents. The material looks like some sort of rip stop but believe me it doesn't stop ripping. The terrain out here is like being on the moon. I have to purchase used rock climbing shoes, disassemble the rubber material and epoxy them to the front and sides of my shoes to prevent this. I don't care about Gore-Tex material for a trail running shoe or getting my feet wet. It's a trail running shoe-If I had a nickel for every time I crossed a creek or glacial runoff I'd be designing my own shoes. I run in Seal Skinz as socks because it's inevitable I'm going to get my shoes wet but my feet stay somewhat dry. Any suggestions for a bombproof shoe?
the heavenly music is telling you "all is wonderful. you have no debt. buy buy buy!'
Hi Seth - thanks for your great reviews. I also got myself a pair of these great shoes. Just one correction: to the best of my knowledge these don't have a rock plate! I think with the current design of the outsole with the aggressive lugs a rock plate doesn't really add any value...I most certainly don't miss it.
The lugs aren't as burly, but check out the New Balance Summit Unknown. Much lighter, has a similar Salomon fit and high drop, firm midsole (it's basically a racing flat with a trail outsole). Personally, the Speedgoat 2 is my go to for rocky, technical stuff.
Nice Daniel. I have held a NB Summit in a shoe store, they looked great. Would love to try them at some point. So many shoes so little time!
Great for soft terrain but anything rocky very painful any hard terrain very sore too.I got gtx version excellent here in Scotland
I normally go up half a size for my trail runners, but since these are longer and wider. Should I go down half a size to my regular runner size?
How does it hold up with pointy rocks
I love my speedcross 4 GTX they are a little snug in the toe area I wear a 9 and 1/2, wondering if I should just go to a 10?
Hello, are these shoes warm?Goretex is only for waterproof or helps for extra warmth?
i just twisted another ankle, after the left one. perhaps I'm not use to the high heels shoe?
I have had some Achilles issues In the past from running and try to be very cognizant when picking out a trail shoe. The drop on these seems great, can you comment on the achilles support or if you have had any issues in that area? Any advice for a Achilles injury prevention during those long runs?
Can I wear these for running on road or walking in road ?
What about the GTX version? Would you recommend it? Are these any waterproof?
Thank you for the great review Seth! I was unable to find the Salomon Speedcross 5 in red color, the color shoes that you used in review. Can I know where and how you able to find them.
Hi Seth! Great channel! I’m gonna be running the Lavaredo Cortina (50km) and wondering whether I’d be better with the S/Lab Sense 7 or the Speedcross 5s. I’m just in it to finish, not trying to bust out a super fast time. Would love your advice! Thanks in advance! 🙏
GREAT, great review...just what I was hoping for! Needed to decide between the Speedcross and the Supercross. Just started with a pair of the Snowspikes (retired my set of Snowcross 2's) and very happy with the fit, feel and function...thank you!
My go-to shoe here in Central Pennsylvania (and having lived in Longmont and run on all the Open Space trails in and around Boulder), our trails are very similar to what I ran back there...obviously not the elevation, but just a rock, rooted, chewed up...has either been the LaSportiva Akyra or the Ultra Raptor.
Odd question...what gimbal are you using on your handheld for the camera? Thanks!
Hi Seth, thanks for the great post!
I was wondering if they are good enough if you run about 25 miles in one run? Or are there better options out there?
Can anyone recommend a shoe with the same kind of beefy lugs but light as a super shoe?
Have you ever considered minimal running shoes such as the vibram five fingers or Merrell vapor gloves?
Baylor, I have considered them. How about you?
I do all of my runs except races and hard workouts in the vibram five finger minimal shoes
which salomon trail runner would you use for backpacking? (assume a 15 pound base weight, 20 pound trail weight)...thanks!
This one absolutely 👍🏻👍🏻 great grip and support
Seth James DeMoor Thanks! Any concerns about the lack of breathability (just based on some internet reviews I’ve read), for when they get wet (I don’t want waterproof, but something that will dry on the inside if I step in water)?
Hi. I yuse inov-8 x claw 275.
I yust joined your channel to find out what my new shoe choice should be. I'm torn between salamon speedcross 4 or 5 or the salamon sense ride 2.
QOD. More Mile Cheviot 4 for the real muddy or snowy conditions.
my go to is adidas terrex. such a nice shoe
Would you buy the goretex version or you wi stay with normal one?
Ok so something I noticed at the beginning of the video. Why do people run with their arms out at an angle like that where they barely move them? Sort of like they're purposefully restricting its movement but sticking it out at an odd angle? I've personally only seen it up till now on people who don't usually run or when someone is panicking or is trying to balance themselves. Now that I've seen someone who obviously is fit and does this stuff regularly do this sort of angled arm swaying, I'm genuinely wondering whats up with it.
No need for gaiters? Ever use them? If so, what kind?
NIce review. Have you covered the cushioning performance of these shoes in earlier reviews? Thanks.
I have never used gaiters, maybe for a long multi day effort in muddy conditions! Not sure I would ever use gaiters in a race. Are you running in a lot of mud?
@@SethJamesDeMoor - Not so much mud, as small rocks/pebbles getting in the shoes. It's a hassle to have to stop, untie, slap out the rocks, retie, and try to resume the same rhythm (only when the little rocks get finally too intolerable, that is). Pretty much every trail I've encountered has these jumping pebbles. Does it never become an issue for you? Is it my uniquely ungainly gait that's kicking in these pebbles into my own shoes, I wonder...
@seth James DeMoor...
can we use it to run on tar ? and grass?
Hi Seth, is it versatile to also run on road/pavement?
I was hoping to find a video of you reviewing ON Cloudventure. Did i miss it somewhere ?

Will the soles last? I hear the speed 4 wear out fast
seth what you say about cross pro and wildcross compared to sc5? :) maybe next video :P
Can you used a trail running shoe for just hiking?
Yes.
I was watching your video and the SC 5's that you wore look a little big. I noticed in the slowmo shots that the toe box curls up on the outside front edge and slaps or shakes when it makes contact with the ground. Did you notice that the 5's are a different fit in length from the 4's?
Would you recommend these for a half marathon
differences between this and the S-Lab Speed 2?
