HGV Owner/Driver UK: My (disappointing) Truck Buying Experience.

- It's long, it's boring, it's my experience.
You don't have to watch it all at once, dip in and out at your own leisure.
It's just me sat in my cab talking and talking, no driving, no delivering, just me telling you about my experience buying my 'Approved Used Truck' direct from the manufacturer.
For more drivers who like talking, check out:
@PetetheCourierDriver who gives advice regarding one of the online load boards.
@Chatting with me in a HGV who chats in his cab about anything that comes to mind.
If you check their channels out please let them know I sent you.
Thank you for sharing your lorry buying experience! It was really insightful for me as someone who is now entering the industry and is potentially interested in going the HGV owner/driver route later down the road (no pun intended). I like your super transparent approach, no super flashy marketing. Just honest and open sharing. Do not worry too much about the waffling or rambling. It's obviously good to keep it slightly in check, but you gave us so much detail and insight on every step of the process you went through that is only normal/natural that some will pop up. Keep up the good work and thank you for the time and the work you put into making this and other videos. Best, Miguel (Manchester).
Thanks, I appreciate the time you've taken to comment.
You tell a good story man, I enjoyed the "waffle" :) Hope all is going well
You sir, have the patience of a saint. You’ve clearly looked after her and deserve to enjoy a great looking wagon now 😎
As it was always my dream starting me own company I would not have the patience you had. It all worked out well at the end after you had to do what they was suppose to do. It must have been very frustrating.
All the best to you mate and thanks for a very informative video. It took me two days to watch it but was all worth it at the end.
Best wishes
Glad you managed to get through it all, well done.
Unreal experience you've had there, but the crowning glory was the last minute. Class... totally agree with it.
Never thought I would need 8 cans to watch it tho... haha... keep it up matey.
Lmao
Great to be able to get this side of the way things can turn out, cracking video pal 👍
Completely agree with what your saying about main dealerships, I wouldn't buy a truck directly from them knowing what they've done with our vans.
They have a habit of eroding trust by making stuff up in my opinion, we don't currently operator anything bigger than 3.5 tonne, but they replaced a clutch for us about 2/3 months previous and this vehicle had done maybe 1000 miles since this was done, due to the nature of our business (House removals) and they had it in for a service and tried to make out it needed a new clutch.
At which point I turned around and said you'll need to have a look at it then won't you because you've only just replaced it, I believe I was speaking to either the owner or manager (Franchised) and he reluctantly agreed to look at it, said there was some wear to some part of the clutch when they looked but he was only going to replace it if we agreed to pay them again essentially. Claimed it was a wear and tear item as per their terms and conditions.
This was eStar Truck & Van (Mercedes), I also have a 2012 E220 and the experience at the car dealership was a totally different kettle of fish although it still comes with a hefty price tag.
We take all the vans to a place in Kidsgrove called Van4, he's a Mercedes Specialist not a dealer but a lot more trustworthy and if he can save you money he does.
I think the phrase 'live and learn' comes to mind.
Cheers.
Awwhhh thanks for the mention 🎉❤❤❤❤
Hi RockGod. Great video, and very amusing. An eye-opener too !. I look forward to watching more of your videos. All the best. Stu.
What a nightmare. Jeez! Was tearing what's left of my hair out for ya. You have the patience of Jobe. Wish you no more crap! Good video. Cheers.
That's absolutely shocking. Fair play to you for having the restraint to not naming/shaming the clowns! Hope you're doing well and it's finally starting to earn its keep :)
As an ex hgv driver, I was always appalled at how service centres treated the trucks and the drivers too.Although I was only a driver, the truck was my home for a week at a time and more often than not I would collect the truck covered in grease inside, footprints everywhere and a stinking attitude from the service desk.
I often wondered how I would be treated if an owner driver.....I'm guessing having watched this video, it'd be no different.
Disgraceful treatment from one of the leading manufacturers. Customer service is non existent, they want the order and that's that. What a headache you've had!
Very much appreciate you passing on your knowledge and experience with going owner. I’ve only passed my class 1 and my partner is going for the transport manager course so we can try to be owner operators. Im just split on going for the straight lorry or semi.
You should try and source work first then decide what vehicle to buy, if you buy a vehicle first it may not be suitable for the type of work you may be offered.
Are you in America (I ask due to your terminology regarding vehicles) ?
@@TheRockgod23 no I’m from Belfast but lived in Calgary Canada for a long time. Thanks for the reply and watched the whole video, absolute shame how these dealerships don’t hide the fact they only care about draining money from you.
When Adblue came out,me and workmate left garage with container, parked, looked for nossile on.not there? Looking about incase it fell off!couple sweary words between us,indented in the back😁
Lol just found this watched all of it can’t wait to see the rest of your vids
Hope you contacted the other guy and joined a joint action
Was literally just making a brew when you said go get yourself one haha. Great video, thanks for sharing your experience s starting up. I eventually want to get there but I don't think some people realise that it can be a painful experience to get started. Also love the near 4 hour video.
Buying the truck should be the easy bit !
@@TheRockgod23 you reckon it would be but my Christ listening to your experience it's scary how they acted
So true am an owner driver and I have this problem too on my inspection I drop the unit off and when I collect it there havnt done anything to it not even grease it up just tick a thew box only takes the couple of minutes. then send me a invoice of 150+ Vat.
now I take it in every 8 weeks just to piss them off.
Lmao
Scannia (every dealership) should be using this testimonial in their staff training, development, contract terminations and sackings.
Everything what not to do has been highlighted in this account.
I feel your frustration.Although I haven’t finished watching your video yet I felt I have to make a comment.Dealerships are supposed to do a pre delevery inspection before handing over the truck to the customer, obviously this wasn’t done.I think the way you have been treated is deplorable.I would be getting in touch with Scania’s head office,if you haven’t already done that.
Already contacted them prior to collecting the truck.
Great to get your knowledge on this I’ve been driving class 1 for 8 years don’t no much about starting up own business buying a truck ect I’m still watching and learning great video :) is the contracts you get with having own truck and money much better as with working with a company yes less worry as everything is done and sorted on the truck side
Once I've paid the running costs I normally have enough for a normal wage and a bit of profit into the Company, this obviously fluctuates depending on how busy I am. It could though all disappear if I have an engine blow up !!
I'm sure service dept have bonus schemes?
Your bang on with main dealers even though sometimes does depend on who you get at the dealers mechanic wise but are DAF dealer dropped the cab back down and then snapped the gear stick so not always the best option sometimes. Top video very informative.
Do agree with that you've said re maintenance. I've primarily driven Volvos and have had much the same experience with MC Truck & Bus in Thurrock as you've had. Go to their Maidstone branch and it's a totally different experience and they can't do enough to help. Now drive an MAN which I'll be glad to see the back of...
I had to have a new power steering pump fitted to my Volvo after it had a load of problems and had been in and out several times. Dropped it off, picked it up a few days later "oh we've taken it out for a test drive". I went, oh that's odd...Only got 0.1 km more on it. Same problem still there, took it back and 2 days driving other spare motors. I now don't leave dealerships until I've verified that the problems don't exist.
Your video really is eye-opening. Makes me want to just stop being a driver and start working at a dealership to try to make a positive difference if they're all like this. I tended to just confront the troubled Volvo dealership above when I had any problems - I'd ask office to let them know, then pop in a day or two before. Then drop it off and say I need X doing, and then go to pick it up. Check if work was completed, if not I just left lorry there.
I've had the same problem with car dealerships as well. Just seems that everything is such hard work and trying to get good reliable people that do what they say and do a good job just seems to difficult.
There's having problems and then there's dealerships blatantly lying. It's fraud on their part. If you'd purchased a car with the experience you'd have you wouldn't have been happy and I'm sure would be looking at the Consumer Rights act etc. Seems like dealerships are used to dealing with large companies rather than an individual experience, it's not good at all. As you say, the vehicle should have had a PDI inspection before you collected it - although you probably know as much as I do in regards to how good those PDI inspections are... I'd certainly be contacting Scania UK or failing that Scania directly in regards to your experience. Watched the video in segments, thanks for sharing your experience. It's all knowledge, at the moment taking the plunge and getting my own lorry is very much still just a dream. Some day I'm tempted to start making calls just to get an idea if I could make it work, and then other days just stuck sitting in traffic on the M25 all day and I just think "I'm glad it's not my problem to stress about this/less loads done in a day etc". Great video, thanks for sharing, onwards and upwards 👍👍
Thanks for taking the time to tell us about your experiences and thanks for watching.
Have watched it back again 3 times rock an i have to say, u nailed the shit out of this one as a update vid and a vid as a whole. CONGRATS M8, MORE TO COME HOPEFULLY #KINGOFTHEROAD
3 times !!!
You're definitely stoned.

@@TheRockgod23 stoned to the gills m8 lol
Enjoyed this but my stress levels are through the roof, had to look at the horizon a few times :).
How much time did this cost you chasing them, days if I’m not mistaken.
I drive class 1 part time and would love to own a truck but my head says its too much grief to be an owner operator. Maybe you will share some details in the business side of it since you went out in your own.
Thanks for sharing and stick with it.
Wasted time: Should have started trading at the start of August, then start of September (when I started finance payments), collected truck in October (first job was approx mid October).
Future videos (when I've time) will be about starting as an Owner/Driver and costs etc.
Cheers.
Wow I cannot believe I just watched a nearly 4 hour UA-cam video and enjoyed listening to you so much. I can relate so much to everything you have said. This seems to be the modern trait today of just blag the sale until you get that signature of sale and worry about the customer afterwards once you've got his money safely into the bank. I really sympathise with your story and admire how you have tried to be explain it all without actually throwing those people under the bus even though they probably deserve it. I guess head office is on their backs to get more and more sales as shareholders need to see a constantly increasing return on their investment.
I think we have gone past a point now where all the good is being ruined by our greed for more and more money. We've lost so much now in life, all the nice parts where we had time for each other and actually wanted to do the right thing morally has just gone. Being a good staff member isn't wanted anymore as it lowers profits. I actually do UA-cam myself to help others after my terrible experience with a Swedish car main dealer that did shady tactics to increase a £100 job to £1,000 and lie when you catch them out.
Wow, can't believe you sat and watched in one go, well done. Thankyou.
@@TheRockgod23 your calm mannerism makes it quite enjoyable. You now have to watch 8 of my videos….. only fair lol mine our less than 30 mins each haha
Great vlog mate I work as a technician at a main stealer (3 pointed star) see your troubles every day!!
Regarding different owners on your truck probably only one, Scania leasing or truck rental, operators maybe many,as you did easiest way to check is google for pics of it,any Scania dealer should be able to get the history from your truck as it’s on a central system,we can do it with the 3 pointed star.
At least it’s been a reliable motor for you and not a cash cow, keep making the good vlogs and maybe see you about as your local to me ! All the best
Cheers, I understand the leasing/hire thing ,my point is that I was told that 'The Green People' had it from new for 5 years and then returned it prior to my purchase.
I share a yard with a few 3 pointed stars so I may be in touch if they have any issues.
Thanks again.
No worries
......took me 2 nights to watch....,but watched it all none the less.....truck looks great....wanted to become an o/o back in '96,.....but was married with 2 little ones running around and got cold feet.....best of luck.........Cheers!
Thanks for taking the time to watch it all !
Cheers.
Sometimes if you fortunate enough to catch them on a good day you get a smile from a main dealer when they are asking for payment.
I feel your pain. I bought my DAF XF unit through an independent and asked him to put a new MOT, which he did but I soon discovered that was not worth the paper it was written on as the vehicle required new pads, discs all round which cost me 4K before making a penny for the company.
I then discovered a broken leaf spring and he promised to find the 2nd key and vehicle history which never materialised.
If I was to do it again, I would go the leasing route instead because alot of these sellers are not interested in customer satisfaction
I'm getting the impression that regardless of whether you buy through a back street 'Arthur Daley' or 'Main Dealer' you can expect the same level of service everywhere.
@@TheRockgod23 absolutely. I now know that most people are selling because the lorry has issues that they themselves don't want to deal with or if the lorry is fine then they want to screw over the buyer for as much as possible and not remotely interested in repeat business which is a damn shame.
Great video and insight, nice one.
I have gone through your video all the way, I was a foreman HGV mechanic now retired and I fully understand your frustration you have been treated very badly .I think you bought your truck with your heart not your head! rule One always take someone with you preferably a mechanic two sets of eyes are better than one, Two get everything in writing all promises and quotes etc Three don't hand any money over until you are completely satisfied once they have your money then you are on your own as you have found out
I started watching and my alarm bells started ringing! firstly why would you change a tractor unit into a rigid ? if that was even possible more likely the cab off a tractor unit has been fitted I have seen this done twice and both times after a bad accident when the cab was too badly damaged to repair so a second hand one was fitted, maybe that is why you still have not got any service history, My advice would be to find the chassis No on the chassis and also the engine No and get onto the insurance ombudsman and ask if they can give you any info!. I hope you find this helpful you have done nothing wrong you just fell into the motor trade trap Ps if you have taken out finance you can get onto them and express your concerns,
Good luck in the future I enjoy your videos they remind me of my times working on and driving HGVs
Cheers, I agree 100%.
One of the first questions I asked related to accident damage leading to the conversion and was told it was a straight conversion not related to any accidents, I think this is correct as the truck had been previously advertised for sale at the same dealer (who had looked after it from new) as an undamaged tractor unit.
As for parting with my money, this was done with the understanding all minor faults highlighted would be sorted and if any other faults occurred after purchase they would also be rectified. This was verbally agreed and also confirmed via text.
Also, I bought direct from the manufacturer as I trusted them not to have a 'motor trader trap'.
Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Funny you mention about batteries. I got a 7.5t Daf Lf at home that I wished I hadnt bought. I sold it now, but the batteries are flat. I didnt realise you can jump them off a car. I might give it a try when I get back on Saturday.
What would happen if you didnt avoid the bridge? Would I blow myself up?
If you avoid the bridge on the donor vehicle (truck, so using both batteries= 24v) and then don't avoid the bridge on the receiving vehicle (so connecting to a single 12v battery) you'll probably overload the 12v battery with 24v, don't know what will happen and I don't recommend doing it!
Remember to connect to just one of your truck batteries if using your car. If it doesn't start reconnect to the other truck battery. If your truck has been sitting a while so still doesn't start you'll have to charge both the batteries.
When you phone they'll say, That's that nutter on the phone,!!😂😂😂😂
thumbs up for letting the lady know that her van's door is open. :) art 2:94:46 :D
Great video!
Unfortunately this is typical of the archaic attitude in road transport & especially main dealers.
They don’t see you as the customer, they have treated you like your just a “Lorry driver” and tried to mug you off : /.
I wonder how many of the people you have had to endure could do what you?!
Have you complained to Scania Uk?!
Keep doing what you’re doing, 😅
Look forward to your next vlog 👍
I did contact them prior to collecting the vehicle but that didn't help.

In my head, when you started driving 7.5 tonners in the mid nineties you looked like Neil from The Young Ones.
Go on then, tell me who you are ?
Sorry, didn’t mean to offend.

Brilliant video, can't you do a h.p.i check on trucks to see the history like you can on vans?
Yes, it was sold as hpi clear. Remember, they've looked after it from new and got it's history, just not sent it to me.
I can't really fault the truck as it was 5 years old and will have some minor issues, I was just disappointed with the level of service, communication and the way my issues were dealt with.
Your quite funny😅 miffed off,I'd love to be like that!,👍
I'm upto your epilogue now
Just watched this video in its entirety. I'm just a company driver so don't have to deal with this crap that you've had to deal with but what an utterly disgusting way to treat a customer. It shouldn't matter if you have 1 vehicle or 100, everyone should be treated the same...how do they expect anyone to do repeat business with them when they treat people like this? It's disgusting
I agree 100%, though can't believe you watched the whole thing in one go !

That would be the Main Dealer at P???TON then!!! Had the odd hiccup with them. There use to be a good lad in the garage (Chris Holden) he might still be there? Think he is garage supervisor. In the words of a fellow trucker….. ONWARD!!!
Don’t worry about waffling.what you had to say is interesting. After all you are only trying is help with a person going into business for themselves.
Working as an employee, what do gaffers say? Don't worry about it!!!
My experience with main dealers is not good I had a MX5 were the ECU was not taking to the fitter they had it six weeks and wanted to keep fitting new parts until the light went out costing more than the car was worth I fetch it out of there which rendered it scrap I took to a guy who racers them he had 2 months fitted a new wiring loom front to back job done

The dealer experience is a myth in my experience these days. They never ever make a promise in writing.
Anything they agree to is verbal, so they can run around the houses and claim they had not been told or crap like that.
Wouldnt it be great if they sat down with you when you book an appointment to view, have a pad and pen or laptop, write things down that concern you and then give you a printed or electronic copy of all the work that they have agreed to carry out prior to collection. And then go through a tickbox with you on collection day. Along with the service history, keys, v5 slip etc. Yeh that would be nice.
How they manage to make any money I dont know, so unprofessional.
Ignoring your calls, emails and texts is just bad business, making false promises and palming you off. You should name and shame them. Stop other people being mugged off by them.
Basically, wouldn't it be great if they just did their job !
Imagine if I operated like that, I'd be out of business in a week.
Cheers, you're spot on.
It’s different for Lena her happy is a fitter and you should always go with your gut reaction
You should take this up with Scania UK as I am sure they would not like how you have been treated
I spoke to them (Milton Keynes) prior to collecting the truck, never heard anything back as they got 'Head of Sales' to contact me, he's the one (on the video) who kept saying "You can still use it" and I couldn't get a word in.
Maybe I should 'have a word' if they are at Truckfest ?
Or send them the link to the video the md at scania
You got messed around with that truck like I did with a car and a well known car dealership, Only I walked away after getting messed about for the 3rd time and getting passed to yet another branch. Car was still for sale 2 month later despite a good list price and it seemed like they just didn't want to sell it.
Doesn't make sense , you think that they would just do their job.
@@TheRockgod23 That's what I thought, Take my money and get it off the forecourt but dealership that actually had the vehicle weren't interested in shifting it. Main Website/contact centre kept referring me to local branches to buy the vehicle be they either couldn't be bothered or couldn't get the dealership who had it to part with it.
Had even paid a deposit on it too!
Started to get the sense something fishy had gone on as it was the only car they had for sale with no reg plate on so walked away after the 3rd round of carry on!
