How Snipers Shoot Moving Targets | Tactical Rifleman

- In this video we cover how Snipers train to shoot moving targets.
First, you have to determine your “Lead.” That’s based on “Time of Flight” and the “Speed” that your target in moving.
Second, you have to master the techniques for cracking that sear so your bullet arrives at the same place as your moving target. We cover the two techniques of Tracking and Ambush. Both techniques work well and each have advantages and disadvantages.
The Ambush technique is the most common one used by Snipers in school, because it allows the shooter to set up a stable firing position. The targets are at a set speed and don't change direction unannounced. This makes for accurate shots and high scores on tests. It is easily the most accurate technique for shooting movers.
However, in real life, breathing targets often wander around and change gait and direction, which may screw a shooter using the Ambush technique.
Which brings us to our second technique for shooting movers, which is Tracking. This requires the shooter to move his weapon with the movement of the target and then break the trigger when the sight picture is at the correct lead. This is less accurate, because the shooter is moving rather than being in a static stable firing position.
I prefer the Tracking technique for shooting on a count down. What am I talking about? Imagine your sniper team is supporting a hostage rescue assault. Snipers are hidden, assaulters are at breach points and there are several enemy sentries walking around. Now, the whole assault is going to go down off of a count-down on the radio. All snipers have to shoot at the exact same time, otherwise the first bullet crack would alert the rest. Now, because of this, you can't guarantee that the sentry will be at your Ambush point right on the count-down. So, you have to move the crosshairs with him, which is using the Tracking Technique.
I hope you enjoy the video. I enjoy teaching and filming the sniper subjects. I know it’s not “sexy”; so we wont get a lot of “Views.” That’s fine. I hope some of you learned a little something; and that’s what it is all about. Thanks for watching. Strength & Honor, TR.

Legend has it that shooter is still taking that break
Ahahhaha😂😂
10 months later hahahaha
The dude doesn’t move at all
I was actually thinking about it has been since year since he is on break
Just realized I used a lot of these methods years ago when I played battlefield. Nice.
It's cool to see that people used these techniques in war video games. They take strategy!
It's a very very very taboo subject but....... A lot of the theoretical aspects of military techniques within battlespace can be used completely interchangably between real life and video games. This gets a lot of people absolutely apeshit volumes of butt hurt but if everyone actually calms the fuck down and leaves ego on the doorstep, few people would ever imply games and real life are "exactly the same" because they're quite simply not. Take people who clear rooms for a living though and put them in a grounded mil-sim and they'll generally wipe the floor with everyone because a good 80% of the techniques and theoretical comprehension can be applied with shocking amounts of comparable relevency.
lmao its just common sense lmao
I’m not sure how I’m just now finding out about this channel but I’m hooked. Have watched just about every video in one sitting. The knowledge and wisdom is unbelievable. New subscriber.
Welcome to Tactical Rifleman! Thanks for subbing. We put out a new video every Friday. Strength and Honor, TR
I've learned something from every one of these videos and I'm 57 and a life long gunner and preparedness guy
vdubb2
Give that man a rifle and stri... I mean spotter
"What is your profession?"
"I walk with a stick and people shoot at me."
I mean, I know they have the berm protecting them...but it would still take a very scary NCO yelling at me or a lot of money to take that job...
1337fraggzb00N I bet a guy does the same job in China. Just without the stick
Imagine that detail. Hey were tapping you out for a detail at sniper school.
Badass what am I doing
Getting shot at

Legal Intern is Not a Real Challeng
😂😂😂
All I hear is professionalism. Perfect instructions.
Thanks for watching, TR
Just imagine you are walking normally and then you get killed from like 1 km away
Snipers are deadly in real life too
God bless our Snipers
You're dead, how do you imagine?
@@MindBodySoulOk lol
I often wonder why these "hood" conflicts aren't just solved with a rifle from distance.
@@fuzzbuzz6581 because it takes training to use a sniper effectively, and these hoodlums dont have them
Carlos Hathcock is still the best in my world. Idc about numbers. Your videos are the best. Easy to understand and practical, educational. You and your brothers are the real heroes in this world.
It’s very interesting that we use the same tracking/Ambush/combo methods with tank gunners. The only difference is, we use “target forms” instead of mils. Typically our ballistic computer on the Abrams calibrates lead based off tracking speed, range, and ammo selection (among other variables), but we still train for degraded conditions.
Awesome
I’ll be one hundred percent honest, this channel is my favorite damn channel on all of UA-cam! I plan on going special forces and heading to sniper school and these videos give me stuff to work on and think about both in my daily life and on the range
Thanks for watching. Strength & Honor, TR
Best of luck!
Nobody is doing what TR brother's are doing on UA-cam, the amount of knowledge and experience these guys bring to the table in just a few minutes is bar none!! Nice job Mr. Karl and gents! Huge fan from Florida and appreciate y'all! 👏
I appreciate that
Absolutely love the sniper videos! anyone can get good at shooting up close in good conditions. but it’s seriously an art to shoot accurately across long distances, in crappy weather. And dealing with targets random movements. Thanks Karl!
The overhead snap and feel of a small whack on the board felt good. When they hit the board....it was definitely felt well. Miss those days :)
Amen
Thanks for tutorial..now I can shoot moving targets very easily with my Sniper !!!
Normal people...how do I shoot a stationary paper target maybe 300 meters away. Karl and his clan...how to snipe moving targets far away LOL. Say what you like....Karl is giving you pearls. There is no way Joe average would know this. Talk about a wealth of knowledge.
GG, Thanks for the kind words. My sniper videos aren't exciting and don't get many views. So, I need help from everyone in sharing and promoting theses videos on other social media. If you are active on places like AR.com or Sniper's Hide, please promote these for me. Thanks again for the support. Strength & Honor, TR.
Lots of us ordinary Joes know about moment holds, but you're right about pearls of wisdom. I just found this channel and am thoroughly impressed; especially by the lack of annoying guitar rock that so many shooting channels feel is a requirement. Just give me the data.
I laugh so much when people say their ar is only good for 100m. Then you start hitting out past 300 with irons. They think it’s vudo or something.
Graeme Guerrilla Indeed. I know a lot more than the average joe, but I still find a seemingly endless well of knowledge on this channel
Not many long distance ranges available for civilian use without good connections. In Florida at least.
Our tax dollars coming back to us one video at a time....Love it!
Love the sniping videos, I'm starting to get into long range shooting so every little instructional video helps
minutemen will need precision shooters.
Train hard, good luck.
Great content guys. I learn more here in 10 minuets than I can learn anywhere else in hours. Thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge and expertise. It’s greatly appreciated.
Sent a guy twice to S. School as a schools NCO and he failed on movers. Great dude, was sad.
He’s not walking slow because he’s lazy, he’s just a specialist trying to get out of duty. Great info as always.
WickedSensation u can tell by the blank papers he carries with purpose lol
In the Navy they call that "gun decking." Doin' the slow-roll on patrol.
WickedSensation "So what do you do in the army?"
"I carry targets for sniper cadets to hit."
Watching this to improve PUBG skills 😎
Brings back many memories of Shooting Skills taught here in NZ
So glad to find a youtube channel that talks from experiance and adds solid fact. Keep up the great work. New follower for sure👊
Thanks for watching, TR
Yet another great video, the sniper oriented videos are definitely the strongest part of the channel , keep it up
Great info, I’m new to long range shooting but I’m loving it so much these day’s! Absorbing so much great info on this channel!
Outstanding! Brings back memories from SOTIC.
Talk about info your never going to typically here much less on UA-cam. Wow impressive presentation
"Here's a tip a learned on the 'job'..." and I thought my OTJ training was strenuous!
The bipod tip is gold.
Hands down the best tactical channel on UA-cam.
Thanks. We are trying to provide good content. Strength & Honor, TR
BRM is everything.. great video, thanks for the tips. Basic teaches a lot but the fine details. Practice Practice Practice.
Hunter use a lot of these methods also mostly tracking and combo methods. Thanks for the info on the bipod I will remember it
Thanks for watching, TR
Thank you for the conformation, I thought that was how it was done but never had an expert say so.
That will be useful in WW3. Thx UA-cam for recommending this
Assuming ww3 is fought with conventional warfare
@@crazybrickstudios7482 I will use it on my teammates so is this alright?
I can neither confirm nor deny 👌
Excellent video. Full of helpful information.
Thanks for watching, TR
Some freaking awesome tips in this gem. Thank you for the knowledge bombs
Thanks for the extremely high level of teaching! Way over my head but interesting
Thanks for watching , TR
No pun intended?
These videos are just incredible. Thank you for your clear, patient explanations.
Good information should help with my sniping on call of duty
As always Karl a pleasure to watch.
The image I got when Karl explained, "shooting behind the mover to compensate for wind", was like bullet-time in The Matrix movie.
Thank You Karl, Your a good instructor when you explain the topics in your video it makes complete sense to me.
Thank You for all the tools you have given me. Have a great day.
BIG RON OVER AND OUT.....
Big Ron, Thanks for watching. My sniper videos are exciting and don't get many views. So, I need help from everyone in sharing and promoting theses videos on other social media. Nice video. I have been shooting Deer all my life killed them standing at 500 yards running at over 100 yards and even head shots running at 100 yards in tall grass. Now I only take head shots even if they are a big buck. Not a rack collector anyway. My point is time with your weapon is key, knowing that my bullet flys at 3000 feet per second is the only thing I need to know. I don’t have time to do all the mathematics and hope the Deer is still there. Anyone that is from the country and is a avid hunter knows how to shoot will be a natural shooter, that’s what won wars and made the best shooters.
Wind speed at shorter distance is normally not a factor. At 500 yds+ even the slightest wind can alter trajectory.
Great information you're putting out
Love sniper training videos. Subscribing for sure. My apologies if my questions below are stupid, I am more of an admirer of the art than a trained sniper.
A few questions:
1. How do you coordinate your breathing and knowing when to take the shot when leading? Can't hold your breath forever 😁
2. Do snipers apply sandpaper to their trigger fingers to enhance trigger feel? Not sure if this is a movie myth.
Will watch most of your videos for some of these insights.
Thanks!
1. Shoot in your normal respiratory pause.
2. No, that's movie crap; though we do cut fingers off of gloves for better feel.
Tactical Rifleman awesome thank you.
you guy are the best and i find ur videos really helpful and i can't stretch that enough
That dude with the rifle is getting some patience training in for sure. Dude just talked for 10 straight minutes standing over him.
Yeah, I’m long winded. Keith is a patient guy.
Very informative video again... tnx very much, I learned a lot. Two thumbs up
You guys are a wealth of essential knowledge.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Your channel is a wealth of knowledge.
Don’t stop and take a smoke break.
Go Karl !
Well which round is well suited for long rand 1000m and above .308, .338 or .50, I think the bigger the round the more it will deflect by wind and gravity?
Love the talent and knowledge in these videos.
awesome channel, a lot of unique info from first hands, thank you guys
Closest to firing (non tracer) at a moving target, was when the whole Company was on line firing semi automatic, at a 4' long remote control airplane, flying @ about 20 mph, 100 meters out, & 20 meters up. Each rifleman held their fire, until the plane crossed their assigned sector window. 6 passes later... there was finally a damaging hit. We were damned astonished that it had taken that much time & rounds, to down it. Reckon tracers would have hastened the time & round factor... but hell, they proly only had 1 plane. Thank's for the instructional logics TR. 82nd '74 2218
I'd like to try something like this, looks like something that could keep me occupied for a while.
very good info and great video. I learned this from an early age hunting, at shorter ranges though. Everything still applies the same, with some great info about application at distance.
wow. nugget , moving the bi pod closer to the mag, gives more adjustment for field of fire. did not think of that . just put a bi pod on my tool, WAS back n forth about placement. thanks Karl ..
Excellent video thank you.💥💥💯
Glad you enjoyed it
Reality vs school so true. Great video as always
I just want a local range I can shoot far enough to actually challenge me. These guys are living he dream.
Best channel on youtube.
I love your direction. It's great for rookies. But can I get a fallow up on 10' widows at 250-500yards. I understand a man has to truly be familiar and know his weapon to accomplish this.
Great video dead on on how to shoot great instruction video glad your working hard
Great video. Very informative, thanks!
Awesome stuff good call on bipod placement and spotter location.
Awesome! Great tips!
Thanks for watching, TR
25,407k subscribers in the last 30 days that's really good!
Keep the videos coming my dudes!
Lots of serious info thanks Karl
Thanks for watching, TR
great set up!!👍🏻
Thanks
Very good, Thank you very much
On here trying to up my deer game boss.. thanks for all the info.
Thanks for watching, TR
Excellent!
Great video
Ever have issues with the target stopping when hearing the charges go off? Or is the sequence fast enough that the bullet is already in flight before his body has chance to respond to the noise and or concussion of the charges? Just an interesting scenario to think about..It would almost seem better to have the sniper shot go off first especially if shooting suppressed...maybe have the shot go off on two and charges on three, entry on 4....I haven't had the opportunity to do that in combat though so there is probably something I'm missing...Great video
It is a count-down... 5... 4... 3... Snipers shoot on 2... charges blow on 1. Thanks for watching. TR.
Count down. Emphasis on the down. Carry on, Marine.
heheh Hey we all have brain farts...Well done gents, i definitley deserved that one hahah
Bullets, especially in Sniper rifles are Supersonic. They travel faster than the speed of Sound. M24 bullet travels at 790 m/s while speed of sound is 330 m/s. So the sound of the gun shot would reach after the bullet reaches the target. The only sniper rifle I know that is subsonic is VSS which has the bullet travel at the speed of sound, so there is no sonic boom and no sound generated by the bullet itself; but only the explosion in the chamber.
They're counting down
Great video, I learned some things.
Really helpful video. Thanks!
Thanks for watching, TR
Great video and very useful info.
moving the tripod based on distance... good tip.
Thanks for watching, TR
Great source of info. Thank you for making this video!
Ive always known 'ambushing', as firing when the sights bob and drift over the target; and aiming at a fixed point that the target moves into, as 'trapping'.
Very good. Funny is that instinctively i already knew those moves but i didnt knew that they had names :D haha
The hint about the bipad was good and i didnt knew.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge, best regards from Brazil.
Thanks for watching, TR
That left hand has seen some battle. Damn
Subscribed! tank you for the great content
Wow, lots of good information here!
Thanks for watching, TR
Nice presentation. Keeperm coming
Thanks for watching, TR
great information, nicely introduced to us.
Very good video ,Very informative .
Good stuff! Semper Fi
Great Video!!
Great facility! Wish there was something like that close to where I live. Thanks for the knowledge.
Another good Video Karl
Glad you liked it. We are putting out another "Sniper" video tomorrow (new video every Friday). So, I hope you dig that one too. Thanks for watching., Strength & Honor, TR.
I actually learned something. I did not think about getting the speed of an movin object in mils. That is very smart, othrwise you would just guess, which is bad. So now basically you observe the walking speed in mil/s and then calculate bullet flighttime * mil/s of the target and you're on, nice!
Glad we could help. Thanks for watching, TR.
Thank you so much for making these highly educational videos! CHeers!
Great video Top I never knew about the combo method I like it
learn something new with every video!
Butts work similar to what we did in the Marine Corps at the rifle range...
Another great vid guys..wish I could train with you!
Awesome information! Please do more information on snipers.
Love your work
Also would like to see helicopter sniper shooting techniques. :)
We were planning some helo work, but the guy donating blade time backed out. If you know a helo pilot that wants to do a couple of videos, I have a number of great platform shooting tips that we can film. Thanks for watching. TR.
Karl do you remember CSM Stephen Overman or CSM Danny Marquez??? We’re all 19th sfg from The mountains
Sorry I do not
